Abstract

Whale shark boat operators are people or organizations that manage and operate boats for tourism purposes that involve interaction with whale sharks. The basis of this study was conducted to analyze the income earned by whale shark boat operators and their operational challenges. Several factors that need to be considered include the number of tourists, the rates charged by the operator, and the operational costs that must be borne. The purpose of this study is to analyze the income and evaluate challenges faced by whale shark tour boat operators. This study uses descriptive survey and observation methods using primary and secondary data, and quantitative income analysis, to identify respondents using the census sampling method. Based on the results of the study, the average net income of whale shark tour boat operators in Botubarani is Rp. 11,710,000 per year. As for the operational challenges in developing whale shark tourism, there are 3 things that affect income, namely the appearance of whale sharks, weather factors, number of visitors, and when there are fewer or no visitors during the wind and wave season which results in no income because whale sharks do not appear on the surface of the water

Abstract

Lamu Village is a fishing village located on the beach or around the sea waters of Batudaa Beach Regency. Empowering the fishing community in Lamu Village can be important because fishermen are one of the main economic sectors in the village. Apart from that, Lamu Village is a village that is included in the category of villages experiencing extreme levels of poverty. In fact, Lamu Village has a lot of enormous natural potential, one of which is the potential for aquatic products because Lamu Village is in the coastal area of Tomini Bay. However, this enormous potential has not been utilized and managed optimally by the people of Lamu Village. The aim of this community service is to provide information regarding the handling of yellowfin tuna catches and training on diversifying noodle products from fish bones as a source of calcium. The methods used are counseling and training methods or direct demonstrations to the community, especially fishermen and PKK women. The results obtained from this training are that the community is able to process and utilize water products, especially those that are the potential of Lamu Village. The community has been able to make meatballs from tuna meat and noodles from tuna bone meal, which is able to create products that can give birth to MSMEs in the community.

Abstract

Fishing capacity is ability of fishery input (boat) used in output production (catch), it measured by using fishing unit or other fishing gear production. In simple way, fishing capacity is an ability of fishing boat (with all aspects) to capture fish. This ability will depend on the fish stock to be captured (seasonally or yearly) and the ability of the fishing gear itself. The aims of this research are to analyze technical efficiency and capacity of capture fishery in between years, of fishing gear and of purse seine. Research location was in the northern water of Gorontalo. Data was analyzed using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The development of capture fishery in 20 years since 1986 - 2005 of the northern water of Gorontalo showed that 1995, 2003 and 2005 are the most efficient years compared to other years, therefore, these years can be used as a basic of allocating fishing effort and catch. The most efficient fishing gear was purse seine and line, whereas gill net is an inefficient fishing gear. For purse seine, there are 11 boats that have efficiency value of 1. In order to reach efficiency level of each purse seine, it needs to decrease the number of input such as reducing 27.97 percent of boat, reducing the length of fishing duration to 29.49 percent, reducing the length of fishing trip/tonnage month to 26.87 percent and reducing fishing operation cost to 15.67 percent.

Abstract

The study aims to report the occurrence and to present photo-identification of killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the Gulf of Tomini. This article is an attempt to provide basic data for further research on cetacean in Indonesia. The study was conducted from February 2017 to February 2019 in waters along the coast of Gorontalo Province in the Gulf of Tomini. Recorded videos and photos were collected, and interviews were conducted with fishers and tour guides. Observations were made at coastal waters near the villages where the occurrence of killer whales has been reported. Focus group discussions were held in a number of places in the study area by utilizing local traditional ecological knowledge. Data were analyzed in a descriptive-qualitative approach. The date of occurrence is sorted chronologically at each location. Photographs or videos were captured for photo-identification. The results showed that the occurrence of killer whales are almost evenly distributed throughout the year regardless of the monsoons. Killer whales usually appear in pods of up to five individuals, with a few exceptions of solo appearances. The resulting photo-identification displays four individuals from four different pods.

Abstract

Abstract. Sahami FM, Kepel RC, Olii AH, Pratasik SB, Lasabuda R, Wantasen A, Habibie SA. 2020. Morphometric and genetic variations of species composers of nike fish assemblages in Gorontalo Bay Waters, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4571-4581.  Nike is Gobioidei fish at the post-larval and juvenile stages whose habitat is still in seawater before they migrate to the freshwater, grow up, and spawn to fulfill their life cycle as an amphidromous species. This study aims to identify the species composers of Nike fish in Gorontalo Bay waters based on their morphometric and molecular characters. 2,523 samples were collected from the catches of fishermen during three periods of their appearance in Gorontalo Bay waters from January to March 2019. The samples were grouped based on their similarity of melanophore patterns, and morphometric characters of 10 units were then measured. This study found 20 different groups of melanophore patterns; 15 of them were new melanophore patterns. DNA samples from each group of new melanophore patterns were then isolated for molecular analysis. The morphometric analysis grouped the 20 melanophore patterns into three separate clusters that were confirmed through molecular analysis. The results of Gen Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) sequences indicate that the new melanophore patterns of Nike fish assemblages consisting of six species; five species in the Gobiidae family (i.e. Sicyopterus parvei, S. cynocephalus, S. longifilis, S. lagocephalus, and Stiphodon semoni) and a species in the Eleotridae family (Belobranchus belobranchus).

Abstract

Abstract. Kadim MK, Pasisingi N, Olii AH, Hertika AMS, Arfiati D, Yuli EH, Baderan DW, Suciyono. 2025. Benthic macroinvertebrate variability as an indicator of aquatic health in the Bone River, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 1247-1256. The Bone River in Gorontalo, Indonesia is at risk of pollution due to anthropogenic activities in the surrounding area. Macroinvertebrates serve as bioindicators of pollution based on their community characteristics, including sedentary behavior, limited mobility, and sensitivity to water quality. This study aims to assess macroinvertebrate communities and evaluate the water quality of the Bone River watershed using the Biological Monitoring Working Party-Average Score Per Taxon (BMWP-ASPT) biotic index. Macroinvertebrate community variability was examined across 12 observation stations. Sampling was conducted during periods of low river discharge and in the absence of precipitation. Observation stations were purposefully selected based on prevailing ecological conditions (preferably riffle areas) and potential contamination sources from land use activities. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected between April and August during the 2021-2023 period and were identified at the family level. A total of 7,456 individuals, representing 43 genera, were recorded, with Platybaetis, Cheumatopsyche, Chironomus, and Coxelmis being widely distributed along the river. Moderate diversity, a high evenness index, and the dominance index suggest that no single macroinvertebrate species dominates the community. The BMWP-ASPT values ranged from 3.08 to 6.77, indicating varying levels of pollution in the Bone River. The findings demonstrate a progressive decline in river health, with worsening conditions observed downstream over the study period.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the community structure of Trichoptera larvae in the Bone River, Gorontalo (Indonesia), by evaluating family-level composition, dominance patterns, and spatial variation across five sampling stations (St.1-St.5). Trichoptera larvae were collected using standardized sampling methods, identified to the family level, and analyzed using multiple diversity metrics, including the Shannon, Simpson, Evenness, and Margalef indices. Differences in taxon richness among stations were assessed using rarefaction analysis, while community structure patterns were further explored using multivariate approaches based on Bray–Curtis dissimilarity, non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS), and hierarchical cluster analysis. A total of 754 individuals representing eight families were identified. Hydropsychidae strongly dominated the community, accounting for more than 70% of the total individuals. Diversity indices revealed spatial variation in community balance, with Station 5 exhibiting the highest diversity and evenness values, indicating a relatively more balanced community structure. Rarefaction analysis suggested that differences in richness were not solely driven by sampling effort. Multivariate analyses based on Bray-Curtis dissimilarity, hierarchical clustering, and NMDS demonstrated spatial differentiation in community composition along the river gradient, largely associated with variations in family dominance. Water quality parameters (temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen) were within national quality standards, indicating conditions generally supportive of aquatic life. The observed variation in community structure therefore likely reflects local habitat dynamics rather than broad physicochemical stress. This study provides baseline data on Trichoptera communities in the Bone River and highlights the ecological importance of Hydropsychidae in shaping community structure, supporting the potential application of Trichoptera as biomonitoring indicators in riverine ecosystems.  Keywords: Trichoptera, River, Community Structure, Spatial Variation, Biomonitoring
