Abstract

Skipjack tuna is an important species targeting by pole and line fishery in Bone Bay. The distribution and abundance of this species tended to aggregate to the preferred bio-physical environments. To describe the short term relationship between skipjack tuna and oceanographic conditions and to visualize the predicted high catch areas, remotely sensed satellite based-oceanographic sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a together fisheries data were used. Results indicated that the highest skipjack CPUEs were mainly found in coastal areas of Palopo and Kolaka both in 2007 and in 2009 during the period of study. The high tuna concentrations corresponded well with chlorophyll-a of 0.15-0.40 mg mg-3 and SST of 29.0-31.5 °C. The preferred ranges provide a good indicator for initially detecting potential skipjack fishing grounds. This study suggested that thermal and chlorophyll fronts as well as upwelling may important mechanisms in explaining the temporal and spatial dynamics of skipjack tuna distribution and abundance in Bone Bay.Keywords: skipjack tuna, potential fishing grounds, satellite images and fronts

Abstract

The aims of this study were to compare skipjack catch between FAD and free school fishing grounds and to describe the effect of the oceanographic factors on either skipjack tuna Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) or free school.  We used a field survey method for collecting the skipjack catch and the fishing positions for both near FAD and free school areas.  Remotely sensed satellite data of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) were also used to extract the oceanographic data corresponding with both the fishing locations. To find out the vital oceanographic factors, we examined the characteristics of the oceanographic variables and skipjack catch using t-test. Results indicated that the fishing operations of skipjack tuna at FAD tended to locate areas of relatively higher Chl-a than at free school locations. We also found that skipjack tuna catch was higher near the FAD than the other area, where the Chl-a was the most significant factor that affected the difference. This study suggests that the number of skipjack tuna FAD in the coastal waters of Bone Bay should be calculated accurately to ensure and support the tuna fishing management in that study area.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the changes of oceanographic parameters and to analyze the effects of the parameter changes on the distribution and abundance of skipjack tuna captured by purse seine fishing gear operated in Coastal Waters of Makassar Strait. This study collected fishing and field oceanographic data from May to October 2017. A survey method was used to obtain primary data (skipjack catch per unit effort/CPUE) and secondary data including sea surface temperature (SST) and Chl-a level 3 with a monthly temporal and spatial resolution of 4 km from 2007-2017, interview, and study literature. The data were processed by using SeaDAS and ArcGIS software packages and were analyzed by anomalies, standard deviation, and Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) analyses. The results showed there were anomalies for both SST and Chl-a near study area reflecting the significant changes in the oceanographic conditions. The changes for both SST and Chl-a were 1.5ºC and -0.97 mg.m-3 respectively. This study suggests that the Chl-a parameter has more significant effects on skipjack tuna distribution and CPUE than SST. Understanding of the areas of the oceanographic changes strongly supports the available habitat for the fishing operation and conservation

Abstract

Makassar Strait plays a vital role as one of the skipjack tuna fishing grounds in Indonesia. This study aimed to detect the skipjack tuna preference of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in Makassar Strait and to map out the possible shifting potential fishing zone (PFZ) of skipjack tuna by simulating sea surface temperature increase. We analyzed the skipjack catch data from July to November 2020, and we added the previous data in June, July, August, October, and December 2019 in the same study area. We analyzed together with satellite imagery data set of SST and Chl-a using GAM. We used three scenarios for the SST increase model simulation, which are 0.25, 0.5, and 1℃. The results showed that skipjack tuna is relatively high in SST ranging from 28.3 to 30.4°C and Chl-a ranging from 0.18 to 0.28 mg/m3. The PFZ based on sea surface temperature simulation showed that PFZ area form in the northern part shifting to the southern part of Makassar Strait based on the increasing sea surface temperature simulation visible in September, which shifted from 0.017-5.421⁰S to 2.923-6.802⁰S and October shifted from 0.017-6.802⁰S to 5.007-6.802⁰S. Knowing the shifting of the potential fishing zone of skipjack tuna could be an important step toward fishing operation and management for skipjack tuna resource management in Makassar Strait.
