Abstract

Arranged marriages and early marriages remain embedded in the social life of some Madurese communities, even though modern developments have increasingly given women more space to determine their own life choices. This tradition is rooted in the belief that marriage serves as a means to maintain the family’s good name and preserve long-standing social relationships built across generations. This study aims to reveal how family habitus and social capital sustain the continuation of arranged marriage practices, and how these dynamics influence the extent of women’s control over decisions related to their marriage. Using a qualitative approach, this study conducted in-depth interviews with three categories of women: those who fully comply with tradition, those who accept arranged marriages as a consequence of maintaining family harmony, and those who have begun to critique the tradition because they feel entitled to choose their own partners. The findings show that habitus functions as a guiding framework for families in evaluating women's propriety and morality through engagement practices prior to courtship, while social capital is mobilized to ensure that the chosen match comes from a family deemed compatible in terms of status, religious networks, and reputation. When habitus and social capital operate strongly, women’s agency tends to weaken; conversely, greater access to education and broader insight opens opportunities for women to negotiate or even reject arranged marriages. This study concludes that arranged marriage is not merely a cultural tradition, but also a family strategy to maintain their position within the social structure. Throughout this process, women continuously negotiate the space they have in making decisions about their own lives.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the santri community and the choice of regional head candidates in local politics in Indonesia displays heterogeneous dynamics across regions. In the 2024 regional elections, Gus Barra, son of KH. Asep Saifuddin Chalim won the contest in Mojokerto, while Bu Nyai Munjidah, daughter of the late KH. A. Wahab Chasbullah, lost in Jombang despite having a strong religious pedigree. Both had the capital to win their second terms as incumbents, but the final results differed. This study aims to explain why the charisma and branding of their parents as kiai produced different electoral outcomes in these two santri regions, thereby contradicting the general understanding that santri communities are homogeneous and contributing to the literature on local Islamic democracy and the sociology of religious politics in Southeast Asia. This article uses a comparative qualitative method, drawing on interviews with political elites and Islamic boarding school figures, local media analysis, and KPU data. Weberian charisma and political agency theories are used to interpret the role of santri communities as active actors in the local democratic process, negotiating political choices. The research results show that victory or defeat is not solely determined by religious capital as the primary factor, but is also influenced by gender factors, political patronage, political campaigns, branding, and fragmented support from Islamic boarding schools. In conclusion, the santri community possesses dynamic, context-specific political agency that cannot be equated across regions.

Abstract

Pelecehan seksual dalam bentuk catcalling merupakan fenomena sosial yang semakin marak terjadi, terutama di ruang publik seperti kawasan Kenjeran, Surabaya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali pengalaman korban catcalling, menganalisis dampak psikologis dan sosial yang dialami, serta mengeksplorasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi tingginya kasus pelecehan verbal. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, penelitian ini melakukan wawancara mendalam dengan lima mahasiswi perempuan yang menjadi korban catcalling. Hasil penelitian menemukan tiga tema utama yang secara konsisten muncul dari pengalaman para korban: 1) Rasa Takut dan Ketidaknyamanan, yang membuat korban merasa terancam dan cemas saat beraktivitas di ruang publik; 2) Perubahan Perilaku, di mana korban mulai menghindari lokasi tertentu atau mengubah cara berpakaian untuk menghindari pelecehan; dan 3) Internalisasi Norma Patriarki, yang membuat korban merasa dilecehkan namun juga merasa tidak berdaya karena menganggap perilaku tersebut sebagai hal yang "lumrah" atau "wajar" di masyarakat. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa catcalling bukan sekadar "gangguan ringan," melainkan masalah serius yang berakar pada budaya patriarki dan norma sosial yang merendahkan perempuan. Untuk menciptakan ruang publik yang lebih aman, diperlukan upaya edukasi masyarakat secara menyeluruh dan penegakan hukum yang lebih tegas terhadap pelaku pelecehan.
