Abstract

Happiness is an important variable in improving the physical and psychological well-being of the elderly. An effective intervention to enhance the variable is reminiscence. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the impact of virtual reminiscence intervention on the happiness of the elderly. The method used was quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design as well as a non-equivalent control group. The sample consisted of 7 and 8 participants in experimental and control groups, aged 60-74 years. In addition, purposive sampling method was used to select participants from 3 nursing homes in Yogyakarta. Data was also collected using Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ), Happy Emotion Thermometer Scale, interviews, and observations. The results showed a significant difference between control and experimental groups on OHQ and Happy Emotion Thermometer scales. According to qualitative evaluation, the intervention generated positive feelings and reduced negative emotions. In this context, virtual reminiscence intervention sessions played a role in increasing the happiness of the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Mothers, especially first-time mothers, are expected by society to suitably adapt to their new role so they can nurture their children properly. Mother's self-differentiation examines their capacity to discern themselves to others and how it will help them adapt better in their transition. In this research, self-differentiation acts as a mediator between mothers' personality and their capability in maintaining their new role as a mother. Purpose: This research analyzes the mediation role of self-differentiation between personality and abilities of first-time mothers regarding their adaptation to their new role.Method: 107 participants, aged between 21 and 25 years, who have children under one year old, and an average marriage age of 1-3 years. Three measuring instruments were used, the International Personality Item Pool-Big Five Markers 50 (IPIP-BFM-50), the Differentiation of Self Scale in Two Domains (DSS-2D), and the Maternal Role Adaptation Questionnaire (MRAQ).Findings: Results indicate that aspects of mothers’ personality influence their maternal role adaptation. Furthermore, aspects of self-differentiation, significantly mediate the relationship between the mother's personality and maternal role adaptation.Implication: Mothers’ self-differentiation will support their adaption in her new role as a mother. Therefore, interventions in helping first time mothers could involve mothers' self-differentiation and personality aspects

Abstract

Background: The accurate assessment of cognitive ability requires valid data, particularly among older adults. Non-credible performance, or symptom exaggeration, threatens the validity of neuropsychological assessments in Indonesia. Purpose: This study aims to examine the diagnostic accuracy of four Performance Validity Tests (PVTs) by comparing healthy older adults and individuals simulating cognitive impairment. Method: An experimental two-group design was used (N=25). Participants passed rigorous cognitive screening (MoCA > 26) and were randomly assigned to a control (n=12) or experimental (n=13) group. PVTs included NV-MSVT, TMJPI, CIHT, and embedded TMT measures. Findings: Mann-Whitney U tests showed significant differences (p< .05) between groups, with controls outperforming simulators. ROC analysis yielded optimal cut-off scores for all PVTs: NV-MSVT A1 (≤ 83), NV-MSVT A2 (≤ 79), TMJPI (≤ 87), CIHT (≤ 9), TMT-A (≥ 131), and TMT-B (≥ 200). AUC values ranged from .713 to .907, indicating good to excellent accuracy in distinguishing the groups. Implication: These findings establish a robust empirical foundation for more ethical and valid neuropsychological research in Indonesia, providing culturally relevant cut-offs to mitigate misdiagnosis in clinical practice, advance cross-cultural neuropsychology in Asia, and strengthen administrative and forensic decision-making.

Abstract

BackgroundCognitive stimulation therapy (CST) has been proven to be beneficial in improving cognition and quality of life in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia (MD). This study investigates the benefit of more frequent exclusively CST intervention compared to less-frequent CST-exercise combination on cognitive ability among elderly people with cognitive impairment. MethodsA quasi-experimental controlled study involving 22 subjects aged = 60 years with cognitive impairment. They were divided into three groups: group A (6 months, weekly CST + exercise sessions, n=13), Group B (3 months, twice-weekly CST-only sessions, n=5), group C (3 months, no intervention, n=4) as control. The Modified Mini Mental State Examination Indonesian Version was used for evaluating the cognitive ability of the elderly subjects. Data were analyzed using one-way Anova and Kruskal-Wallis tests ResultsAll participants completed the study, the majority being female with mean age of 70.43 ± 6.97 years and differences in education level distribution across the three groups. The scores before and after the intervention showed a significant difference in the registration and construction domains (p<0.005). However, there was a greater improvement of the mean difference in cognitive scores in groups A and B compared to the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant (p >0.05). ConclusionA twice-weekly CST-only intervention and a once-a-week CST-exercise combination provide better cognitive improvement than no intervention (control). Therefore, elderly people with cognitive impairment should be encouraged to engage in physical activities, brain training, and group activities for promoting the brain’s ability.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic situation causes psychological distress for working mothers. Personality and attachment styles are protective factors against psychological distress. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between personality dimensions and types of attachment styles with psychological distress level. This study also aims to find the predictors of psychological distress. The measuring instruments are the Big Five Inventory (BFI), Attachment Styles Questionnaire (ASQ), and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). The three measuring instruments were administered to 297 women aged 26-39 years old, who were working from home, and had children aged 1-5 years. Participants were obtained using convenience sampling and the data collection process took place online. Data analysis utilized Spearman’s correlation to test the correlation between variables and multiple regression to test predictor regression of each variable. The results showed positive relationship on the dimension of neuroticism, type of discomfort, type of relationships, type of approval, and type of preoccupation with psychological distress level. The dimension of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and the type of confidence showed a negative relationship, while the dimension of openness did not show any relation. The results of the regression test showed three aspects that act as predictors, namely the dimension of neuroticism, type of approval, and type of preoccupation. The dimension of neuroticism was the predictor with highest contribution. Based on these results, it can be concluded that personality dimensions contribute more dominantly to psychological distress than types of attachment styles.

Abstract

This study explores the correlation between minority stress, self-esteem, and social well-being among young adult gay men and lesbian women in Indonesia, by analyzing the mediating role of self-esteem on the correlation between minority stress and social well-being. Design utilized in this study is correlational design with mediation analysis. This study draws on a sample of 437 gay men and lesbian women (Mage = 24). The authors employed Spearman’s correlation and mediation analysis on the three measurement instruments. Results showed that all the measurement instruments correlated with each other significantly. Specifically, minority stress reduces self-esteem and in turn it will also lower the social well-being among young adult gay men and lesbian women in Indonesia. Moreover, the result also indicated that self-esteem have a partial mediating role on the relationship between minority stress and social well-being among young adult gay men and lesbian women. From the result of this study, it can be concluded that self-esteem is an important protective factor on gay men and lesbian women’s self-esteem. Therefore, the authors endorse a cultural shift to reduce minority stress among gay men and lesbian women in Indonesia. Additionally, organizations or mental health professionals may utilize self-esteem and social well-being as a mean for enhancing the mental health of Indonesian gay men and lesbian women.
