Abstract

When comparing Lawang to Nagari Tigo Balai, the latter exhibits an attractive appearance on product packaging, which is one of the crucial factors in the marketing strategy of micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM). UMKM's issues in the Nagari Tigo Balai area include limited technology and knowledge in redesigning packaging. This Community Service Activity (PKM) aims to assist UMKM in Nagari Tigo Balai in designing packaging for "Barandang" peanut products. The method consists of three stages: observation, analysis of the content of "Barandang" peanut products, and assistance in designing packaging until the design is ready for printing. The result of the assistance activity is the creation of packaging designs for "Barandang" peanut products for two UMKMs in Nagari Tigo Balai, namely LBM and ARYA, with nutritional information on the packaging. Based on the discussion during the assistance activity, this packaging redesign assistance plays a crucial role for UMKM practitioners in making their marketed products more attractive, thus increasing buyers' interest and purchasing power even further.

Abstract

Drought analysis can be used as an early warning of drought in rice fields, which can be identified by connecting various parameters. This study aims to identify the potential for rice fields vulnerable to drought in Agam Regency. Drought is primarily caused by uneven rainfall distribution, leading to imbalanced hydrological conditions. This study used the last 30 years of rainfall data (1993 2022) from five stations located at Agam Regency (Canduang and Gumarang) and the rest outside of the study area (Padang Panjang, Suliki, and Paraman Talang). Spatial analysis of drought distribution was carried out using the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) method. The results showed the consistency test value of rainfall data for all five stations was obtained with an average of R² with a value of 0.992, the potential area of rice fields with a dry and very dry category was 13,640.61 ha and 904.55 ha, respectively. The conclusions of this study are (i) the districts with the most potential to be affected by drought (dry and very dry categories) are Tilatang Kamang and Malalak District, with an area of 2,058.15 ha and 750.48 ha, respectively, (ii) it is important to prepare the water shortage in the dry season by utilizing rivers, irrigation and reservoirs in the area. Keywords: Agam Regency, Drought Potential, Rain, Rice Fields, SPI.

Abstract

This activity aims to transfer knowledge and technology in the use of livestock manure and rice straw as an environmentally friendly alternative energy source, namely biogas, so that farmers get social and economic benefits from their own waste. The methods used in the implementation of this activity are lectures, demonstrations, and experiments. The results of the socialization and training activities on the use of biogas from livestock manure and rice straw can achieve the objectives in accordance with the objectives of community service activities, this can be seen from the increase in participants' understanding of the processing of waste into biogas after 50% of activities.

Abstract

Analysis and identification of superior agricultural commodity areas play a crucial role in determining regions with high potential for agricultural development. This study aims to identify priority agricultural commodities and assess their development potential in Lawang, Matur District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province. The research was conducted in several stages. First, superior agricultural commodities were identified using the Location Quotient (LQ) and Shift Share Analysis (SSA) methods. Second, the potential development areas for these commodities were determined using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Weighted Linear Combination (WLC) approach, integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis. The results indicate that the priority agricultural commodities in Nagari Lawang are peanuts for the food crop subsector, shallots for the horticulture subsector, and sugarcane for the plantation subsector. These findings provide valuable information for policymakers and local farmers to optimize land use, enhance agricultural productivity, and support sustainable rural economic development. Furthemore, the methodology used in this study can also be applied to other regions to identify superior agricultural commodities. Keywords: Analytical hierarchy process, Leading commodities, Location quotient, Shift share analysis, Weight linear combination.

Abstract

Road infrastructure is a crucial element in supporting socio-economic growth, particularly in rural areas such as Nagari Lawang, Agam Regency, West Sumatra. This article discusses efforts to map road conditions in Nagari Lawang using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The objective of this mapping is to enhance road accessibility, which can support the economic growth of the local community, especially in the agriculture and tourism sectors. The methodology includes road accessibility surveys and data analysis using ArcGIS software. Survey results indicate that the roads in Nagari Lawang are predominantly concrete with an average width of 2 meters, while dirt roads are narrower and mainly used as farm roads. The resulting map is expected to assist the government in more targeted and equitable development planning. This road mapping not only supports infrastructure development but also aligns with the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program as a collaborative effort in regional development to the head of the Lawang village government.

Abstract

Agriculture’s waste is still minimum to utilized the one is empty fruit bunches (EFB), as like happened in the PT.XYZ (Xxx Yyy Zzz). EFB usually left rot into compost naturally which is need decomposition period 6 – 12months. This research aims to design chopper of EFB and carry out a technical examination of the toolperformance. Testing performed by using 5 kgs EFB at three repetition with the average of water content andfat content respectively 32.06 % and 7.46 %. The average of effective work capacity 81.46 kg/hr, chopped 43.33%, percentage do not chop 54.00 %, percentage of yield loss 2.67 %, measure the thickness of the chopping 0.5– 1 cm, 1 – 5 cm, 5 – 10 cm, and >10 cm consecutively was 64.53 %, 15.40 %, 9.21 %, and 10.85 %, therotational frequency 1,121 rpm, and noise level of chopper between 91.17 to 94.40 dB. Chopping use thischopper of EFB was 13 times more efficient than manual chopping and this research is still valid whencompared to the 2018 study.

Abstract

Over the past decade, the Indonesian government has been recommending double-row transplanting systems, i.e., Jajar Legowo (JL) and Jejer Manten (JM), to increase rice production. These systems have been reported to obtain higher yield of Indica rice cultivars than the standard tile (TL) system, primarily due to the border effect. However, scientific investigations of the border effect in these transplanting systems remain limited. This study was conducted during the summer seasons in Japan in 2022 and 2023 to observe the plant growth and yield of a Japonica rice cultivar, Nikomaru, and to investigate differences in meteorological properties, such as intercepted solar radiation (SRint). The study found that higher plant competition for light in JM and JL caused a lower tiller number and above-ground biomass (Wt) per hill than in TL. However, due to denser planting, JM and JL obtained higher tiller numbers, Wt, and sink capacity per unit area than TL. Additionally, the denser canopy in JM and JL compared to TL increased SRint by the whole canopy, even though the space between the double rows was wider. Although SRint was not significantly different amongthe systems, higher normalized difference vegetation index in JM and JL was strongly correlated with a higher sink filling rate due to the healthier canopy absorbing more solar radiation. The synergistic effect of higher sink capacity and sink filling rate led to higher yields in JM and JL than in TL. This study suggests that JM is the best transplanting system for increasing rice yield.
