Abstract

Politeness is ethics in socializing by using a good choice of words, and pay attention to where, when, to whom, and for what purpose we are talking. Politeness is a type of behavior allowed speaker to engage in social interaction in atmosphere of relative harmony. Thus, Leech specifies the maxim more carefully and comprehensively which constraint influencing speaker’s communicative behavior. The aims of this research are to identify and to analyze maxim of politeness in Alice in Wonderland movie. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis methods with steps to reduce or choose the main subject then analyze and categorize according to maxim of politeness in movie conversation. The results showed that Alice in Wonderland movie consist of Maxim which proposed by Leech such as generosity, tact, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy.

Abstract

The research focus is a systemic functional linguistics study especially analysis of transitivity systems used by Lydia Machova in speech The Secret of Learning a New Language TED Talks. The research objective is to find out the types of transitivity process identified by Lydia Machova in her speech of The Secret of Learning a New Language in TED TALKS based on the theory proposed by Halliday (2004). This research used descriptive qualitative research. The datas are clauses in form of simplex and complex clauses which provided the types of transitivity process. The research result shown all types of transitivity process in Lydia Machova utterances. The highest usages of transitivity process are Material process due to the most accessible to our conscious reflection and the function of doing process in Lydia context of discussion is positively influence the listeners to follow the tips and the advice which Lydia and other polyglots experienced in learning language processes.

Abstract

Language variation arises from social interactions and reflects a speaker's ability to adapt their communication style to different contexts and purposes. In Sociolinguistics, the choice of a language variety is influenced by the speaker's need for an appropriate communication situation. This research examines the use of language variation in the film Designated Survivor. The analysis was based on the five language variations proposed in Martin Joos’s theory. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative method. This analysis identified 129 language variation: 2 frozen styles, 40 formal styles, 48 consultative styles, 36 casual styles, and 3 intimate styles. The consultative style found as the dominant style in this research due to many existing meetings and negotiations in which both the speaker and the addressee convey their argument, opinion, and point of view about the topic being discussed.
