Abstract

Abstract

Background: Stunting was the impact of chronic malnutrition in the long term and has an impact on children's growth and development disorders. Stunting has become a priority for the Indonesian government, including in the Province of East Nusa Tenggara with a stunting reduction target of 14% in 2024. The Indonesian governments have made many efforts to overcome stunting. Religious leaders are parties suspected of being able to play a role in the process. This study was aimed to determine the factors that influence the role of religious leaders in supporting the process of accelerating stunting reduction in the dry land area in East Nusa Tenggara. Subjects and Method: This was a mixed-method study. This study was conducted in May 2022 using the focus group discussion (FGD) method and involved 13 religious leaders who were taken purposively. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively (making interview transcripts) and quantitatively. The independent variables were level of understanding about stunting, support for policies/programs related to stunting, stunting program budget support, national program support: CATIN facilitation, and cross-sectoral cooperation support. The statistical analysis used is multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Factors that significantly influence the role of religious leaders are the level of understanding of religious leaders about stunting (aOR= 3.50; 95% CI= 0.12 to 12.3; p= 0.010) and support factors for cross-sectoral cooperation (aOR= 2.00; 95% CI= 1.22 to 21.10; p= 0.007). Budget support for stunting related policies/ program (aOR= 2.40; 95% CI= 1.76 to 12.32; p= 0.621), support policy/ program related to stunting (aOR= 1.70; 95% CI= 1.27 to 7.32; p= 0.387), and national program, support “CATIN Mentoring” (aOR= 1.10; 95% CI= 0.37 to 21.02; p= 0.621) were statistically non-significant. Conclusion: Factors that influence the role of religious leaders were the level of understanding of religious leaders about stunting, support factors for cross-sectoral cooperation, budget support for stunting related policies, support policy related to stunting national program, and support “CATIN Mentoring”. Keywords: the role of religious leaders, acceleration of stunting prevention, chronic malnutrition. Abstract

The problem of stunting is still fundamental in Indonesia's human development. East Nusa Tenggara Province is an archipelago dryland area with the highest prevalence of stunted children under five in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the relationship of child characteristics with the prevalence of stunting. This type of research is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. This study used individual secondary data from the Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey in 2021 consisting of 7,835 children under five. The results of the spatial analysis showed that in the child's characteristic factor, there was a relationship between short birth length and low birth weight with stunting prevalence. It is hoped that there will be a special model of stunting control interventions that are integrated and of high quality through multisectoral cooperation in the dryland areas of the islands of East Nusa Tenggara Province.

Abstract

Optimal children’s nutritional status is an indicator of achieving child growth according to their age. Optimizing nutritional status is supported by providing nutrition intake to meet children's daily nutrition needs. Kindergarten students need  nutritionally, healthy and safe food. Providing balanced nutritious food supplies for kindergarten students requires knowledge, attitudes and good practices from parents, as well as implementation of nutritionally balanced meal that are integrated into the kindergarten learning curriculum from the school. Harapan Bunda Kindergarten, which is located in Talang Belido Village, Sungai Gelam District, Muaro Jambi Regency, has never received nutrition promotion regarding the nutritious food for kindergarten students. The food supplies for kindergarten students brought by their parents also do not implement balanced diet. This community service activity aimed to organize nutritional promotion of balanced nutritious food to optimize the nutritional status of kindergarten students with the targets are teachers and parents. The results of community service activities showed that there is an increase in target’s knowledge before and after being given education which is not significantly different (Sig.>0.05). It is necessary to get used to implementing balance diet on children's meal which contain carbohydrate foods, protein foods, vegetables, fruit, and drinking water consumption (1200-1500 ml per day)..

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a blended training for school teachers on adolescent health and nutrition. The training objective was to improve teachers’ knowledge, as well as their capacity to develop and implement action plans on school-based health and nutrition programs. Adolescents continue to face nutrition problems closely linked with poor eating behaviours and lack of physical activity. School has been identified as an effective venue for improving these problems. Many teachers’ training programs were reported on increasing the teachers’ roles in school health and nutrition program, but studies utilizing a blended training is lacking. This study used pre-post intervention with mixed methods design. The participants of this blended training were secondary school teachers who enrolled in a five-phase Nutrition Goes to School (NGTS) training on school-based nutrition promotion program, comprising in-service learning and on-the-job training for ten months. The participants decreased throughout the training to 114 participants completed the whole training. Out of 114 participants, 25 (22%) passed this NGTS blended training. Participants’ knowledge on health and nutrition improved as shown in pre-test median score of 60 and post-test median score of 80 (p<0.001). The final assignment on developing action plans showed a relatively good quality of engagement based on the participants’ understanding on the NGTS program, their resources, and their ability to manage challenges. Blended training with long duration but accompanied with technical assistance can provide added value in understanding the process of the NGTS program implementation and school-based health and nutrition program in general. However, the high attrition rate should be improved by facilitating more varied and engaging activities as part of the technical assistance in the future training program.
