Abstract

The current study was designed to investigate the types of plagiarism that appear in EFL students’ theses at Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, Indonesia. It sought to examine the plagiarism level, and investigate the triggering factors encouraging these EFL students of the 2019 batch to plagiarize. This study used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants in this study were ten EFL students of the 2019 batch and their theses. The participants were randomly selected. The data collection was carried out using two research instruments, namely document analysis, and interview. The researcher analyzed the student's thesis using Plagiarism Checker X. The results of the document analysis showed that there were two types of plagiarism detected in the student's thesis, namely word for word and mosaic plagiarism. Second, the researcher found that the plagiarism level of the 2019 batch English students' thesis of UIN Ar-Raniry was at the low-level plagiarism category, which can be observed from the result of the similarity index. The level of plagiarism found in these theses was less than 30%, still at an acceptable level as stipulated by the university regulation. Meanwhile, the result of the interview showed that all participants know what plagiarism is and they think that plagiarism is a negative conduct. Several factors influences EFL English students to plagiarize, such as poor time management, laziness, poor paraphrasing skills, affordable internet access, and running out of ideas.

The findings also indicate that bullying influences students’ academic achievement; bullying incidents have driven their victims into four pathetic conditions: less confident, stressed, anxious, and passive. Some steps are applied by the lecturer to prevent and handle bullying; they are: providing classroom regulation, being a counselor for students, enforcing the regulation, and massive socialization.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning time allocation in Merdeka Curriculum at SDN Neusok Teubalui. Using a qualitative approach with observation, interview, and documentation methods, this study found that the allocation of 3 hours of PAI intracurricular time per week is running well. However, co-curricular learning (1 hour for the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project or P5) is considered less effective. Time constraints, lack of collaboration between PAI teachers and class teachers, and the often neglected time allocation for P5 are the main obstacles. Some teachers only utilize co-curricular hours for reading, without integrating relevant themes. To overcome this problem, it is suggested that there should be better coordination in the implementation of P5, including the appointment of activity coordinators based on the learning phase. This study underlines the importance of optimizing learning time and collaboration between educators to improve the effectiveness of PAI learning in shaping students' character in accordance with the values of Pancasila.

Abstract

Flipped learning within blended learning has attracted interest for its potential benefits. However, implementing a fully blended model with in-person synchronous learning remains challenging. Therefore, this mixed-methods study investigates a modified flipped approach using a virtual synchronous classroom environment, replacing traditional face-to-face interaction with online instruction. Specifically, our study focused on its implementation in the context of a Public Speaking class, aiming to explore students experiences and levels of learning anxiety with the modified flipped instructional method. A number of 43 out of 50 English major students from one of the state Islamic universities in Indonesia, in their fifth semester, completed and submitted the questionnaires. The results of the study indicated that the implementation of a virtual synchronous flipped classroom had a dual effect, positively influencing both the advancement of students speaking abilities and the alleviation of their anxiety in speaking English. The students found the Synchronous Virtual Flipped Classroom (SVFC) engaging and intellectually stimulating, recommending its adoption via platforms like Zoom and WhatsApp. While they recognized the benefits of technology, their views varied contextually, particularly regarding social interaction. Despite the advantages, students expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of social presence and sensory experience compared to traditional classrooms. Technical issues further hampered peer interaction and impacted their learning experience. These findings provide useful information regarding the potential and limitations of virtual synchronous flipped classrooms in enhancing speaking skills and managing anxiety in language learning.

Abstract

Pursuing higher education is a multifaceted decision influenced by financial, social, and psychological factors. This study examines the interest of students at the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, in pursuing postgraduate education amid an economic recession. It focuses on a sample of 70 fourth-year undergraduate students. Using a quantitative descriptive research design, the data were collected through a structured questionnaire consisting of 10 yes/no questions and 10 Likert scale questions, which were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show that 77.1% of the respondents acknowledged that the economic recession influenced their educational choices, while 87.1% believed that obtaining a higher degree would improve their career prospects. Financial constraints were a major concern, with 55.7% reporting a decrease in their family's ability to pay for education, yet 82.9% reported relying on scholarships or financial aid as a critical factor in their decision-making process. Despite the economic challenges, 90% of students remained optimistic about overcoming financial barriers, driven by both intrinsic (51.4% motivated by personal and professional growth) and extrinsic (94% recognizing career benefits) motivations. Social and academic support also played a critical role, with 92.9% influenced by mentorship and 97.1% by encouragement from family and friends. Concerns about educational quality persisted, however, as 87.1% of students perceived the recession as hurting higher education institutions. These findings underscore the need for higher education institutions and policymakers to expand financial aid programs, improve academic mentoring, and align educational curricula with the demands of the broader labor market to ensure equitable access to higher education during times of economic instability.

Abstract

One of the methods gaining popularity in the context of teaching in recent years is flipped classroom instruction (FCI). The FCI encourages EFL learners to maximize their time away from class by using products of advanced technologies. Owing to this fact, the researchers conducted a study on the issue of Students’ writing performance and their attitudes about the use of technology. A mixed-method study was used to investigate students’ writing achievement and their attitudes to web-based instruction in the form of Flipped classroom instruction. Quantitative data was collected through survey questionnaires, while qualitative data was gained from interviews. The investigation on flipped classroom instruction was conducted at three State Islamic Universities in Indonesia. The questionnaires were distributed to EFL students at these three State Islamic universities to identify students’ experience in learning writing by using flipped classroom instruction. There were 198 students involved in this research. Also, twelve English lecturers from those three universities were interviewed. Findings suggested that most students had a positive attitude toward flipped classroom instruction. Although flipped classroom interaction does not guarantee the improvement of students’ writing performance, it is believed that flipped classroom instruction supports students to have a meaningful and effective learning experience.
