Abstract

Agroforestry is a land-use system with the potential to increase biomass, carbon stock, and estimated CO₂-equivalent sequestration, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation. This study aimed to estimate aboveground biomass, carbon stock, and CO₂-equivalent sequestration in a candlenut (Aleurites moluccanus)–coffee (Coffea canephora) agroforestry system in Kaongkeongkea Village, Pasarwajo District, Buton Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. Field measurements were conducted from November to December 2024 using a non-destructive method by measuring diameter at breast height (DBH) in 11 plots measuring 20 m × 20 m, with a total sample area of 0.44 ha. Biomass was estimated using species-specific allometric equations, carbon stock was calculated using a carbon fraction of 47%, and CO₂-equivalent sequestration was estimated using a conversion factor of 3.67. The results showed that the agroforestry system was dominated by coffee, with a density of 215.91 trees ha⁻¹, while candlenut had a density of 113.64 trees ha⁻¹. The average biomass of candlenut reached 117.06 tons ha⁻¹, higher than that of coffee at 12.35 tons ha⁻¹. The carbon stock of candlenut was 55.02 tons C ha⁻¹, while coffee stored 5.81 tons C ha⁻¹. Meanwhile, CO₂-equivalent sequestration was 201.74 tons CO₂ ha⁻¹ for candlenut and 21.29 tons CO₂ ha⁻¹ for coffee. Across the 43 ha agroforestry area, total CO₂-equivalent sequestration was estimated at 9,589.97 tons CO₂. These findings indicate that candlenut contributes dominantly to carbon stock in the agroforestry system.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Kahirun, Sabaruddin L, Mukhtar, Kilowasid LOMH. 2019. Evaluation of land use impact on river water quality using macroinvertebrates as bioindicator in Lahumoko Watershed, Buton Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1658-1670. The Lahumoko Watershed, a small watershed, that empties into the sea is sensitive to water quality changes due to land use changes by humans. Uncontrolled land use changes can threaten the sustainability of the river ecological functions of the watershed. It is important to examine the comparison of river water quality in locations that represent land uses. So, the objectives of this study were to reveal the impact of land use on biological water quality in rivers and to analyze the relationship between macroinvertebrates communities with parameters of biodiversity and physicochemical at the observation locations that represented land use. Biological samplings were done using a hand net with a hole size of 0.5 mm mesh, at five stations, each with three replications, with a length of 30 m of each replication, 60 minutes per station. The results of the study showed that individual abundance, family biotic index and diversity index parameters indicated that the water quality was quite good in the upstream watershed (LM1, LM2, and LM3 stations) and somewhat worse in the middle (LM4 station) and downstream of the watershed (LM5 station). The Spearman's correlation, Dendrogram, and Canonical Correspondent Analysis (CCA) showed that there were similarities among LM1, LM2 and LM3 stations, and also between LM4 and LM5 stations. Physicochemical parameters, especially the velocity and flow rate of the river flow had significant correlation with individual richness and density.

Abstract

Abstract. Nasaruddin N, Sabaruddin L, Analuddin K, Sudia LB. 2023. Taxonomic and functional diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrate from natural forest as reference for streams health indicators in Lasolo Watershed, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 5523-5538. Macroinvertebrates are known to play a crucial role in nutrient recycling and serve as valuable stream degradation indicators. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the structural and functional diversity of macroinvertebrate communities as a reference for stream health indicators in tropical Sulawesi, Indonesia. Spatial sampling using a multi-habitat method was conducted between September 2021 and March 2022 in five streams connected to natural forest and three from drainage areas in dryland farming. Data on forest cover, physical-chemical variables, and macroinvertebrate samples were collected, while the species richness and diversity trends across streams were analyzed using individual rarefaction curves. In addition, the composition of macroinvertebrate functional group was also evaluated. The results showed that 2474 individuals belonging to 77 genera were recorded throughout the area. We found a reduction in taxa composition by comparing the reference and impacted stream at the genus, family, and order levels with approximate values of 83.1%, 74.07%, and 55.6%, respectively. At least seven significantly different potential metrics that differentiated between reference and the impacted ecosystem were found, including the number of family taxa (#family), the number of insect taxa (#insect), the number of Ephemeroptera-Plecoptera-Trichoptera taxa (#EPT), the number of scraper taxa (#scraper), as well as Shannon-Wiener diversity, Simpson Evenness, and Margalef Richness index. These metrics offer a strong method for assessing land use change and their impact on freshwater biodiversity, emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts in the ecosystem.
