Abstract

Numerous researchers examine teachers' and students’ experiences in online learning at the college level. But there are a few sources that explore the implementation of English online classes at a Vocational high level. This issue is highly needed since the theory and researches dealing with this topic at this level still rare. The present study aims to close the gap by investigating the implementation of English online classes. The participants were six female English teachers and one hundred and seventy students at one state vocational high school in Central Java, Indonesia. The current research analyzes not only numerical data but also narrative data, which is customary for qualitative research to address the research questions. The instruments use questionnaires and a semi-structured interview. The overall results revealed that technology could help both teachers and students in conducting teaching and learning activities, even though some constraints such as limited data plan, network difficulties, and lack of teacher-students engagement. Furthermore, understanding materials became top rank challenged for participants during the online class. The current study contributes theoretical and practical benefits to improve the implementation of online learning in the age of global pandemics.

Abstract

Background: Dubbing is an interesting translation for movie viewers because viewers do not need to be constrained by reading the subtitling on the monitor. However, with all its limitations dubbing is a challenge for a translator. Frozen: Party is over is an intriguing film to investigate. Methodology: All utterances of the characters in the film are becoming the research data. The numbers of data were 62 for words, phrases and sentences and analyzed using Molina & Albir's translation theory. The interactive model of Miles and Huberman analyzed all the data. Findings: The result of the research is that the translation techniques used by the translator were modulation, established equivalent and literal. The most dominant technique used by the translator was literal. This is because children consume the film, so most of the sentences are simple sentences. Conclusion: The translation techniques used by the translator were modulation, established equivalent and literal. Originality: This research focused on the dubbing translation technique for the animated film Frozen: Party is over. In comparison, other research with the same object discussed topics such as deixis, language styles, illocutionary act and subtitling.

Abstract

Teaching language in this global era demands mostly the creativity of the teachers, this is because in 21th century, students need to be critical thinkers, creative, communicative and collaborative. Therefore, the creativity of the teacher is manifested by evaluating the multiple resources and adapting or adopting them based on the contextualized learning situation including individual differences, styles and learners needs. It is also essential for the teacher to integrate the four macro skills in teaching language in order to make the students more communicative and collaborative. Hence, this paper presents the evaluation of the language teaching resources before and during applying them to the classroom contexts. The data were collected by document review and interview with the secondary school teacher. The data were analyzed qualitatively through interactive model. There is variation of the results based on the techniques of data collection. The interview shows that theoretically the teacher is creative to make the materials for students. Meanwhile, the document review findings show that there is a need of improvement on the way to evaluate and use the English materials based on the context. Finally, in evaluating the textbooks in order to adopt or adapt by adding or removing some materials to make English textbooks match with students’ contexts. Keywords evaluation, adapting, adopting, macro skills, English language teaching.
