Abstract

Waste management shares the same purposes with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target in 2030. This program encourages all countries to substantially reduce waste through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse its waste so that the sustainability of development can be achieved. The success rate of sustainable waste management is largely determined by the participation and behavior of people, households, and citizens in managing their waste. This study analyzes socio-economic factors and the role of social capital in affecting households' willingness to participate in waste management in West Sumatra’s urban areas. This study used National Socio-Economic Survey data in the Social Resilience module. The sample in this study is 1011 households spread across the urban areas of West Sumatra. Using logistic regression, this study found that per capita household expenditure, homeownership status, knowledge, and household involvement in mutual cooperation activities to clean up their environment significantly affect the probability of households participating in urban waste management. The relevant policy, such as implementing the 3R concept, namely reduce, reuse, and recycling is needed for the Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved.

Abstract

Social welfare program from the government has a role in reducing poverty rates and improving the welfare of poor households. Through social assistance, it can increase household income and indirectly alleviate the need for women to work. This study aims to analyze the effect of government social assistance on the probability of married women participating in the labor market. This study uses secondary data from the National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS) in 2019 in West Sumatra. Using the logit model, the results of this study show that married women who are receiving social assistance have a greater opportunity to participate in the labor market.

Abstract

The influence of human activity on the environment is becoming one of the world's significant problems. This arises because of growing concerns about the influence of each country's economic activity on the global environment. On the other hand, sustainable economic growth and human well-being are recognized as dependent on the benefits derived from the environment. This study aims to analyze the impact of economic growth on environmental quality in Indonesia.  To analyze the impact, regression analysis of polynomial panels was used by using panel data from 34 provinces in Indonesia in 2014 – 2019. The results found that non-linear GDP per capita only had a significant effect on the quality of land cover and water quality in Indonesia, but it did not have a significant effect on air quality. As for provinces in Java and Bali, it was found that non-linear GDP per capita only had a significant effect on air quality and land cover but did not have a significant effect on water quality in the area. Unlike provinces outside Java and Bali, GDP per capita non-linearly has a significant effect on air and water quality, but it does not have a significant effect on land cover quality. These results provide different recommendations for each  regional cluster.

Abstract

Working after marriage is a dilemma for most women in Indonesia. This study estimates the probability of a working woman to exit the labor market after marriage. Using the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) data from the 2007 and 2014 waves, this study estimates a logit model on the probability of a working woman to exit the labor force. This study found that working in the formal sector is the most significant variable to encourage a working woman to leave the labor force. The policy recommendation of this study is reducing the opportunity costs of working for women in the formal sector

Abstract

Crowding out analysis emphasizes the extent to which household spending on tobacco affects other baskets of household expenditures. The data used in this study is the National Socio-Economic Survey in 2016. Using the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System equation, this study found that tobacco expenditure has a negative and significant effect on almost all types of household expenditures, such as fuel, education, entertainment, clothing, health, and durable goods. Household durable goods expenditure is the most displaced or sacrificed, followed by education expenditure. This finding reveals tobacco consumption has effect on human capital investment and long-run economic growth in West Sumatra.

(8) The extent to which the influence of household income on the demand for children of working women in Indonesia. The data used in this study is cross-sectional data collected from the 2022 KOR SUSENAS data. This research method uses logistic regression analysis techniques. Based on the results of the study: the wife's age, husband's age, wife's education level, husband's education level, wife's type of work, husband's working status, child's gender preference, and household income have a positive and significant effect on children's demand for working women in Indonesia.
