Abstract

Abstract

It is important for students to learn scientific literacy because it’s related to how students understand the environment and face issues in modern society. Students with excellent scientific literacy skills are able to apply the concepts and facts learned at school in everyday situations. The purpose of this research is to provide an overview of students’ scientific literacy at SMA Negeri 11 Pontianak. The research method used is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The population under study consists of grade XI science students, including XI IPA 1, XI IPA 2, and XI IPA 3. Sample selection employs purposive sampling technique, considering specific factors such as students who have received instruction from teachers in the subject of electrolyte solutions and possess a good academic abilities. A total of 37 students from class XI IPA 2 are chosen as research samples. Data collection technique involves measurement and communications, utilizing instruments in the form of five essay questions that have been tested for validity. Based on the research data, it is known that aspect of explaining scientific phenomena reached 60,47%, while in determine the properties and samples of solutions from electrical conductivity experimental data, percentage is 75%. To provide conclusions and opnions on electrolyte test results from everyday life phenomena reached 61,93%. If averaged, overall, students’ scientific literacy skills are in the moderate category, with an average score of  65,251%.

Abstract

The industrial revolution 4.0 makes us develop into adaptive humans. 21st century skills, that involves thinking critically and inventiveness, abilities to communicate and teamworks, are needed to adapt to all technological changes. Among the four 21st century skills, creative thinking skills are needed to develop innovative ideas in answering problems in the learning process. The variable of this research is students’ creative thinking skills. The aspects studied consist of originality, fluency, flexibility, and elaboration. The research process was conducted with descriptive quantitative using a sample of 35 students of class XI IPA at SMA Negeri 1 Mempawah Hilir. The research instruments used were creative thinking test questions in the form of descriptions and interview guidelines. The results of data analysis stated that students’ creative thinking skills were included in the insufficient category with a percentage of 74,29% of the sample. The average value in originality is 42,68%, while the aspects of fluency, flexibility, and elaboration have the same average of 36,78%. Several factors cause the low level of students’ creative thinking skills; namely students still memorize the material in the book, lack of learning experience, students tend to give answers as they are because they think they will get a score even though they only write a few answers, and another factor is that students lack focus when working on test questions.

Abstract

Collaboration Skills (CS) are important to master in 21st century and must be developed for academic and career success in the real world. The study aims to describe the collaboration skills of Chemistry Department students at FKIP UNTAN through practicum learning activities in the laboratory. The research method is a quantitative descriptive research. The Research participants were 63 students who took basic chemistry practicum courses. Data collection was carried out using observation techniques with the help of two observers and collaboration skills observation sheets, that had been validated by two experts in the field of evaluation. The results showed that, the average of percentage value obtained for each indicator such as: contributing to group discussions (96.83%) is at very high criteria, working effectively in groups (99.40%) is at very high criteria, communicating in group activities (75%) is at high criteria, and having responsibility for completing group assignments (93.25%) is at very high criteria. Therefore, collaboration skills can not only be honed through teaching and learning activities in class, but also can be honed through practicum learning activities in the laboratory.

Abstract

Interactive multimedia has an important role in the learning process. The interactive multimedia presented the learning material in various forms and supported students understanding of those who have different learning styles. To help students understand the topic and to facilitate students learning style the PeT-EFig is developed. PeT-EFig (periodic table and electron configuration) as interactive multimedia which supported students understanding of electron configuration concepts. The objectives of this study were a) to determine the feasibility of PeT-EFig, and b) to determine the response of chemistry teachers and students of PeT-EFig as interactive multimedia. The research method used is research and development (RD) using the ADDIE model with five stages: analysis, design, and development stages. However, the research was only conducted up to the development stage due to time constraints. Based on the result, PeT-EFig is considered very suitable by the experts with 96 and 95% respectively. Likewise, teachers at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak who teach chemistry subjects, stated that they strongly approved PeT-EFig as interactive multimedia on electron configuration 96%. Additionally, students also provided very positive feedback on the PeT-EFig through a small-scale trial involving 15 students with an average percentage of 87% for each aspect. Similarly, when a large-scale trial with 40 students, the final percentage score for each aspect was found to be 87%. The result indicated that the PeT-EFig could assist teachers in delivering the concepts and help students understand the electron configuration and atomic structure
