Abstract

TOEIC as the medium of the students’ professional development at Vacational High School. This article aimed at describing how to empower English-literacy culture through TOEIC training to the graders XII TKR 3, XII TGB 2, and XII TBSM 2 of State Vacational High School Dander Bojonegoro. The TOEIC training given including listening and reading skill. The result of this Community  Service  Program showed that the score of TOEIC training is low because of the students of State Vacational High School Dander Bojonegoro have not mastered TOEIC test. They did not know and understand about TOEIC. There is not TOEIC simulation yet. The student English background, especially on vocabulary mastery is still low. There were 81 students joined the TOEIC test. 26 students from the twelveth grade of TKR 3. 26 students from the twelveth grade of TGB 2. and 29 students from the twelveth grade of TBSM 2. The highest of TOEIC score is 64 and the lowest of TOEIC score is 8. The highest of  mean score is reach by TGB 2 grade with 32 score, and the lowest of mean score is is reach by TBSM 2 with 29 score. So, it is necessary to conduct another TOEIC training for students of State Vacational High School Dander Bojonegoro  So, what’s is your recommendation? Solution?Keywords: GLS, , TOEIC, Vacational High School ABSTRAKTOEIC merupakan sarana pengembangan profesional peserta didik pada Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan. Artikel ini bertujuan menggambarkan bagaimana memberdayakan budaya literasi Bahasa Inggris melalui pelatihan TOEIC pada peserta didik kelas XII TKR 3, XII TGB 2, XII TBSM 2 SMK Negeri Dander Bojonegoro. Pelatihan TOEIC yang diberikan meliputi ketrampilan mendengar dan membaca. Hasil PKM ini menunjukkan bahwa hasil skor pelatihan TOEIC masih jauh dari sempurna dikarenakan peserta didik SMKN Dander belum terlatih/terbiasa dan belum menguasai soal soal TOEIC. Mereka belum begitu mengenal dan paham tentang TOEIC serta belum pernah ada simulasi atau pelatihan TOEIC yang diadakan di sekolah sebelumya. Selain itu latar belakang Bahasa Inggris terutama pada kosakata yang berhubungan dengan jurusan yang mereka pelajari masih lemah. Terdapat 81 peserta didik yang melaksanakan tes TOEIC, 26 peserta didik jurusan TKR 3, 26 peserta didik jurusan TGB 2 dan 29 peserta didik jurusan TBSM 2. Hasil nilai simulasi TOEFL tertinggi adalah 64 dan nilai terendah adalah 8. Nilai rata rata tertinggi diraih oleh kelas TGB 2 dengan jumlah 32, dan nilai rata rata terendah dengan jumlah 29 ada di kelas TBSM 2. Oleh karena itu, perludiadakan pelatihan TOEIC lagi bagi peserta didik SMK Negeri Dander Bojonegoro.

Abstract

This article is resulted from the activity of Community Service Program located at State Vocational High School 1, Kanor, Bojonegoro. The low student’s ability in English and the lack of achievement in poem indicated the need of empowerment in writing poem at this school. This article aimed at describing the empowerment process of literary culture of writing poem in Indonesian and English to the graders XI and XII. Indonesia poem took the themes of TKR (Teknik Kendaraan Ringan or Simple Vehicle Technique), Multimedia, Pemasaran (Marketing), and TPHP (Teknik Pengolahan Hasil Pertanian or Agricultural Products Processing Technique). Meanwhile, English poem took free theme but was limited to the six types of poems namely acrostic, cinquain, haiku, tanka, diamante, and calligram. Indonesian poem on expertise program of Vocational High School was intended for deepening students’ understanding on their study fields, while English poem was aimed at improving students’ abilities in English. The results of this Community Service Program reported that there were 34 out of 94 students’ poems fulfilling the criteria of good poem and deserved to be published. Although the poem feasibility only reached 36.2%, this percentage could be categorized as quite good first achievement for the students.Keywords: Vocational High School, Poetry literacy, English, Indonesian.ABSTRAKArtikel ini merupakan hasil dari kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) yang bertempat di SMK Negeri 1 Kanor, Bojonegoro.  Rendahnya kemampuan Bahasa Inggris serta belum adanya prestasi dibidang seni puisi pada peserta didik SMK Negeri I Kanor, Bojonegoro mengindikasikan perlunya pemberdayaan menulis puisi pada sekolah ini. Artikel ini bertujuan menggambarkan bagaimana memberdayakan budaya literasi menulis puisi berbahasa Indonesia dan berbahasa Inggris pada peserta didik kelas XI and XII. Puisi berbahasa Indonesia mengambil 4 tema yaitu TKR (Teknik Kendaraan Ringan), Multimedia, Pemasaran, dan TPHP (Teknik Pengolahan Hasil Pertanian), sedangkan puisi berbahasa Inggris mengambil tema bebas tapi bentuk puisi terbatas pada 6 jenis yaitu acrostic, cinquain, haiku, tanka, diamante, dan calligram. Puisi berbahasa Indonesia bertema program keahlian SMK bertujuan untuk memperdalam pemahaman mereka tentang materi jurusan masing-masing, sedangkan puisi berbahasa Inggris bertujuan meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris peserta didik sekaligus memperkenalkan bentuk-bentuk puisi berbahasa Inggris. Hasil kegiatan PKM ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 34 puisi dari total 94 puisi peserta didik yang terpilih dan memenuhi kriteria bagus dan layak terbit. Meskipun kelayakan puisi hanya mencapai 36,2%, persentase ini merupakan pencapaian pertama peserta didik yang cukup bagus.Kata kunci: SMK, Literasi puisi, Bahasa Inggris, Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

English is a subject that is considered difficult by most elementary school students, especially students in the regions. Students' ability to remember vocabulary is one of the difficulties that is often encountered because English is a foreign language that we never use in everyday life. These difficulties can be overcome by using the right media in the learning process. One of the media that can be used is Snakes and ladders which in this service activity is modified into Slides and Ladder (slide and ladder). This media is made using the Canva application where in each box there are objects that must be answered by students. In the application of this media it can be seen that students are excited to take part in the games given. Students also seem motivated to try to answer the questions given in each box they step on. So it can be concluded that the use of appropriate media in learning can trigger students to be excited so that what they get can be embedded in students' long term memory.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has a very complex impact on modern human life. Referring to this phenomenon, we found a problem, namely the students’ readiness. We examine this problem from 2 dimensions, (1) are the infrastructure owned by students adequate? and (2) whether students can focus and concentrate in online learning. The current research under qualitative case study, where interview and observation were used in collecting the data. The results of the study show that (1) it's pretty good, almost all students have adequate infrastructure such a phone-cell (65%), and also personal computer (11%) and laptop (24%); (2) Overall students have been able to receive lessons in online learning. However, there are obstacles in the interaction of students with teachers, especially for students with high anxiety. Further study that focused on the reason of students’ anxiety is need to conducted to get a whole understanding of students’ readiness.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum is a new policy in the Indonesian education sector that aims to give teachers and schools the freedom to design learning that suits students' needs and abilities. This research aims to determine teachers' perceptions of the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English vocabulary lessons in rural elementary schools. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with 3 class teachers in each elementary school in a rural area that had implemented the independent curriculum. The results of the research show that teachers have a positive perception of the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English vocabulary lessons in rural elementary schools. Teachers feel that the Merdeka Curriculum gives them the freedom to design learning that is more creative and innovative, and better suited to students' needs and abilities. The findings of this research show that the Merdeka Curriculum has the potential to improve the quality of English language learning in elementary schools. However, further support is needed from the government and schools to assist teachers in implementing the Independent Curriculum effectively

Abstract

Teacher strategy is the most important technique in teaching vocabulary. Teaching strategies aim to make it easier for teachers to choose the methods used to help students learn the desired subject matter and develop goals that will be achieved in the future. There are many strategies that teachers can use to teach vocabulary, one of which is games. The purpose of this research is to analyze what strategies teachers use and how to implement the strategies they use when teaching English vocabulary. This research focuses on 3 teachers based on the length of teaching experience at SDN Baklan II Kapas. In this research, researchers collected data using direct interviews with teachers at SDN Bakalan II Kapas. This study's results reveal several strategies teachers use when teaching in the classroom.

Abstract

Vocabulary is the basic part and a key element to learning any language. Courage to speak must be supported by adequate vocabulary. If we dare to speak but are not supported by vocabulary, then we may use sign language to express something.. However, to improve memorize of vocabulary, teachers must use a technique or strategy that is suitable, one of which is the use unplugged activity coding game. This research aimed to describe the effectiveness of unplugged activities in teaching vocabulary which is conducted at MI Mansyaul Huda. To explain the effectiveness of teaching vocabulary to young learners, the researcher employed a pre-experimental research approach to get more information in detail. The data were collected through the pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the 2nd-grade students of MI Mansyaul Huda in the academic year 2023/2024 which consisted of 20 students. The result showed that the use of unplugged activities was effective in teaching vocabulary to young learners evidenced by the increase in pre-test to post-test score. Kosakata adalah bagian dasar dan elemen kunci untuk mempelajari bahasa apa pun. Keberanian berbicara harus ditunjang dengan kosakata yang memadai. Namun untuk meningkatkan hafalan kosa kata, guru harus menggunakan teknik atau strategi yang sesuai, salah satunya adalah penggunaan unplugged aktivitas coding game. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan efektivitas aktivitas unplugged dalam pengajaran kosakata yang dilakukan di MI Mansyaul Huda. Untuk menjelaskan efektivitas pengajaran kosakata bagi pelajar muda, peneliti menggunakan pendekatan penelitian pra-eksperimen untuk mendapatkan informasi lebih rinci. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui pre test dan post test. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 2 MI Mansyaul Huda tahun ajaran 2023/2024 yang berjumlah 20 siswa. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan aktivitas unplugged efektif dalam pengajaran kosakata bagi pelajar muda yang dibuktikan dengan peningkatan nilai pre test ke post test.

Abstract

In linguistics, semantics studies how meaning is expressed through language, including sentences, phrases, and words. Connotative meaning, which gives words emotional depth and resonance, is significant in song lyrics. This study, titled “A Semantic Analysis of Connotative Meaning in Ben Howard’s Song Lyrics,” aims to explore the connotative meanings in Ben Howard's lyrics. The researcher chose five of his most popular songs on Spotify for this analysis. Using a qualitative descriptive analysis approach, the study looks into the sense of values and types of connotative meanings in the lyrics. The analysis shows that the songs’ themes affect the types of connotations found. Songs about love, vulnerability, and youth memories tend to have positive connotations, while themes of self-doubt, separation, and searching for life’s meaning have more negative and neutral connotations. Moreover, associative meaning is the most common connotative form, followed by affective, reflective, and allusive meanings. The findings indicate that song themes greatly influence the types of connotations used, with positive connotations more frequent in hopeful songs and negative ones in introspective songs. This research adds to language studies by offering insights into the complex and rich meanings in Ben Howard’s song lyrics.

Abstract

Pembelajaran dengan menggunakan teknologi digital di SDN Ledok Kulon I Bojonegoro perlu diterapkan supaya siswa lebih tertarik dalam mengikuti proses pembelajaran. Selama ini pembelajaran yang diterapkan oleh guru hanya berpedoman pada buku paket dan LKS sehingga siswa merasa jenuh dan bosan. Pemanfaatan penggunaan teknologi digital sebagai media pembelajaran adalah salah satu cara untuk menciptakan proses pembelajaran yang interaktif dan menyenangkan. Adapun media digital yang digunakan yaitu media web wordwall. Web Wordwall merupakan media edukasi yang bisa dipakai untuk permainan edukasi seperti, menjodohkan, kuis, pencarian kata, dan berpasangan. Metode yang dipakai dalam PkM ini menggunakan penyampaian materi, tanya jawab, dan demonstrasi. Hasil kegiatan dari PkM ini adalah semua siswa sangat antusias dan bersemangat dalam mengikuti proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan web wordwall. Proses pembelajaran lebih menarik dan menyenangkan karena dengan web wordwall dapat membuat siswa lebih mudah dalam memahami materi pelajaran, siswa tidak hanya mendengarkan penjelasan guru tetapi siswa bisa belajar sambil bermain dan dapat meningkatkan literasi siswa. Selain itu, minat dan motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran semakin meningkat.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate grammar learning strategy used by students in grammar class. It employed a survey design as part of a quantitative research methodology. The participants were students enrolled intermediate grammar class. The instruments used was questionnaire proposed by Oxford (1990), modified by Kemp (2007) and Bayou (2015). There were 32 questions divided into six strategies. The form of response was a 5-point Likert scale, with 1 representing never and 5 representing always. The result showed that meta-cognitive and compensation were two strategies frequently employed by the students.
