Abstract

Studies related to herpetofauna diversity in the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park (Tanakaya), West Kalimantan are very limited. Data related to the richness of amphibians and reptiles in this area are important for the management of the area in the future. We conducted amphibian and reptile surveys in Tanakaya in July-August 2019 using Visual Encounter Survey methods at five sites (Belaban Resort: Km 37 & 39; Resort Rantau Malam: Batu Lintang, Sungai Mangan, and Hulu Rabang). We recorded 50 amphibian species from nine families and 25 reptile species from seven different families. Twenty of these species are new records for Tanakaya. The highest diversity (H' = 2.94) was found in Batu Lintang, while the highest evenness (E = 0.55) was in Sungai Mangan, and the highest community similarity index (IS = 0.6) was in Batu Lintang with Km 37. Combined with previous studies, there have been 142 species (78 species of amphibians and 64 species of reptiles) recorded from Tanakaya. Further study is needed to fully understand the herpetofauna in Tanakaya, but our data highlights the importance of the national park for preserving global biodiversity.

Abstract

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, is an endemic species protected by Indonesian law, mostly due to its population size and limited distribution. The natural distribution of the Komodo dragon is limited to Komodo National Park and several areas on the island of Flores and its surroundings. However, increasing population and tourism in its natural habitat might increase the conflict between the Komodo dragon and humans. To study the impact of human activities on the behavior of the Komodo dragon, we constructed an ethogram to catalog the behavioral inventories of the Komodo to enable future quantitative comparison. The Komodo dragon ethogram was obtained from observations in Loh Buaya and Loh Baru Resorts, Rinca Island, Komodo National Park. Observations were made on 10 adult males, 13 adult females, 12 juveniles, and 3 hatchlings Komodo dragons. Data were collected during July-September 2019, February-March 2020, and June-September 2020. Based on observations, observed behavior was grouped into 9 categories based on their function. Among them are sexual behavior, parental behavior, antagonistic behavior, ingestion/egestion, maintenance, movement, resting, and investigative.

Abstract

Abstract

One of the conservation efforts for the Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the translocation of the Komodo. Six juvenile captive-bred Komodo Dragons were translocated from Bogor to Wae Wuul Nature Reserve, East Nusa Tenggara Province, on 23rd September 2023. This research aims to calculate and describe home ranges total daily movements and the habitat conditions of Komodo Dragons. The research was carried out at the Wae Wuul Nature Reserve using the radio tracking method for 11 days, as most of the translocated Komodo Dragons could only survive in the short term. Results showed that translocated Komodo Dragons tend to stay near the initial release location. The average total daily movement translocated Komodo Dragons was 424.53 m day–1 with an average home range of 34.11 ha and an average core area of 8.20 ha. The habitats used by Komodo Dragons are savanna and monsoon forests dominated by bushes and trees. The presence of feral dogs and vehicle road access have the potential to pose a threat to the translocated Komodo Dragons.

Abstract

Abstract

Concerns in crocodiles sustainability have long been overlooked, due to humans fear of its ferocity and unresolved human-crocodile conflicts. The siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) and false gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii) are considered threatened by the IUCN red list because of their limited range and declining populations. In this study we developed habitat suitability model for both species and overlaid with anthropogenic factors to mitigate conflict between crocodiles and human in Mesangat-Suwi Wetland, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. We collected species presence from 2018–2023, measured environmental variables, interviewed 100 respondents, and mapped all information with Maximum Enthropy program (MaxEnt). Results showed that different factors influenced the habitat distribution for each species. Specifically, distance from swamps was affected the most for both crocodiles. Our model found that the potential habitat was much smaller than the non-potential ones due to humans’ intrusion. Much of the Mesangat-Suwi area was covered in high-conflict zones between humans and crocodiles, endangering both species even more. Hence, serious actions were urgently needed to resolve the conflict, either by prevention and mitigation actions, to ensure human-crocodile coexistence in East Kalimantan.

Abstract

Understanding animal movement is essential for assessing species' ecological needs and informing effective conservation strategies. This study investigates the short-term daily movement and home range of the Endangered (EN) pig-nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta) in the Kao River, Boven Digoel District, South Papua, Indonesia. Native to Papua New Guinea, Northern Australia, and Southern Papua, this freshwater turtle faces heavy egg harvesting pressure. Using low-cost GPS tracking devices, we monitored six adult individuals (one male and five females) over a three-day period during November–December 2023. The results indicated that the daily movements of C. insculpta ranged from 84.95 to 648.77 m. Average home range estimates were 18.03 ha (minimum convex polygon), 7.51 ha (50% kernel density), and 12.44 ha (95% kernel density). The movement overlaps among the four turtles totaled 30.64 ha, with an average overlap of 6.12 ha. The hotspot analysis identified 76.16 ha as key movement areas, revealing that the pig-nosed turtles tend to stay near sandbanks, primary dryland forest, secondary dryland forest, and shrublands. Our studyprovides important baseline ecological data that can be used to inform future conservation and recovery programs. Elaboration between stakeholders and the local community can be carried out to protect the species.

Abstract

The conservation of freshwater turtles relies on local knowledge and perceptions. This phenomenon is especially significant for communities located near turtle habitats. This study aims to investigate the influence of local communities' knowledge and perceptions of freshwater turtles on their attitudes, behaviors, and the resulting conservation outcomes for these species. Knowledge encompasses the empirical understanding of turtle species, their ecological roles, and conservation statuses. Perceptions encompass the subjective beliefs, attitudes, and values influenced by culture that communities hold regarding these species. The research was carried out in three river systems of southern Sumatra, involving interviews with 133 participants through a semi-structured approach that included closed and semi-open questionnaires, alongside a recollection method utilizing photographs as a tool. Identification was successful for only 8 of the 12 depicted turtle species, and merely one-third of the freshwater turtle eggs were identifiable. The most widely recognized species include the ambiona box turtle (Cuora amboinensis), Malaysian giant turtle (Orlitia borneensis), soft-shelled turtle (Amyda cartilaginea), and black marsh turtle (Siebenrockiella crassicollis). While most perceptions indicated a favorable attitude towards freshwater turtle conservation, negative behaviors persist that may adversely affect turtle populations.

Abstract

Leptophryne javanica is a frog in West Java and Central Java. Threats to the presence of L. javanica in nature include volcanic activity and chytrid fungi. The population of L. javanica is not known for certain. This study aims to estimate the abundance of L. javanica in several streams of Mount Ciremai National Park and describe the habitat of this species. This research was conducted in Cisurian Waterfall, Cilutung Waterfall, Ciinjuk Spring, and Cilengkrang Waterfall using visual encounter methods combined with sampling transect. L. javanica was found mostly in Ciinjuk Springs with an abundance of 2.50 ± 3.09 ind /10 m. More males were found than females, except in the Cisurian Waterfall. The body size and weight of the females were larger than the males. The microhabitat of Ciinjuk Spring had an average of river currents of 0.34 m/s, river width of 0.8–1.2 m, river depth of 1.0–3.4 cm, and canopy density ranging from 54.17–100%. In addition to the spring, the waterfall was also a preferred habitat by L. javanica. Further research is needed in other waterfalls and rivers with microhabitat characteristics similar to Ciinjuk Spring.
