Abstract

This study discusses the important role played by youth and women in the Indonesian National Awakening between 1908 and 1945. This study uses a history method. The activeness of youth and women who contributed to increasing national awareness, efforts to unite, and the development of the spirit of independence. Youth organizations such as Budi Utomo, Jong Java, and other youth organizations held the First Youth Congress and culminated in the Second Youth Congress which gave birth to the Youth Pledge. The Youth Congress succeeded in combining local identities into a united national spirit. Likewise, the women's movement led by figures such as R. A. Kartini, Dewi Sartika, and Roehana Kudus, highlighted the importance of education and liberation as a means to achieve equality and active participation in the struggle for independence. The Indonesian Women's Congress held in 1928 became a symbol of the strategic role of women in socio-political aspects. The findings of this study indicate that the struggle for Indonesian independence was not only driven by the elite class, the armed forces, but also by the strength of society from various backgrounds who had a high level of political awareness and nationalism. Therefore, youth and women are key actors in creating national identity and the direction of the nation's struggle towards independence.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to present the findings from the Bongal Site as an essential learning resource for the History subject in Senior High Schools, particularly in exploring the dynamics of cultural interaction and the spread of religion in the Indonesian archipelago during ancient times. Methodology: This research employs a qualitative methodology, integrating historical and archaeological approaches. The historical approach is used to reconstruct the process of Christianity’s arrival on the west coast of Sumatra. At the same time, archaeological data are supported by an extensive literature review and field observations. Main Findings: The findings reveal that the spread of early Christianity to Sumatra, though still debated among historians, is evidenced by written sources indicating the presence of the Nestorian Church in the Fansur (Barus) region. Archaeological excavations at the Bongal Site uncovered various artifacts such as rings engraved with crosses, Roman beads, carved stones with Christian symbols, and Byzantine liturgical spoons that support this narrative. Novelty/Originality of this study: The originality of this study lies in the identification and comparative analysis of artifacts that bear significant resemblance to early Roman and Byzantine Christian objects. These findings not only offer new insights into the early presence of Christianity on Sumatra’s west coast but also support the use of the Bongal Site as a contextual and meaningful historical learning resource in secondary education.

Abstract

This study explores the historical buildings in Medan, which serve as vital cultural heritage from the Dutch colonial era in North Sumatra. These well-preserved structures stand as monumental evidence of the past and are legally recognized as heritage sites. Over time, the area that once served as the administrative center has undergone significant transformations, evolving into a commercial hub. This shift has resulted in physical modifications, functional repurposing, and the emergence of new constructions that disrupt the architectural harmony of the colonial-era landscape. Employing a historical research method—encompassing heuristic analysis, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography—this study investigates the impact of colonialism on Medan’s urban development. The findings indicate that the visual identity of Lapangan Merdeka is predominantly defined by its physical elements, particularly the enduring presence of Dutch colonial buildings. The area’s architectural character is shaped by key design principles, including uniform building heights, structural alignment, roof typology, and spatial arrangements between buildings. This research underscores the growing threat posed by urban modernization to Medan’s historical integrity, emphasizing the urgent need for conservation strategies to preserve its colonial architectural heritage and cultural significance.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the Ethical Policy on the development of education in early 20th-century Indonesia, focusing on the Dutch colonial government's efforts to improve the social and economic conditions of the indigenous population. The research explores how the Ethical Policy influenced the colonial education system and brought about significant changes in educational access for indigenous communities. Using a historical analysis approach, the study draws from primary sources, such as colonial policy documents, and secondary sources that analyze the societal impact of education policies. The findings reveal that while the Ethical Policy increased educational opportunities, these were mainly accessible to the elite class, limiting broader educational access among the indigenous population. However, the policy inadvertently set the stage for an intellectual awakening that spurred anti-colonial resistance. The study concludes that the Ethical Policy, while aimed at the welfare of the indigenous people, primarily benefited the elite, inadvertently fostering nationalistic sentiment among educated Indonesians.

Abstract

The construction of Great Postal Road, known as the De Grote Postweg, played a transformative role in shaping infrastructure development and social dynamics in Java during the early 19th century. This study examines the historical context, motivations, and impacts of the 1,000 km road, stretching from Anyer to Panarukan, constructed under the administration of Governor-General Herman Willem Daendels. Employing the historical method, the research follows a four-step process: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, ensuring data accuracy and reliability. The findings reveal that the primary objectives of the road were to improve communication across Java and bolster defenses against British threats along the northern coast. Furthermore, the construction resulted in substantial changes to the island's infrastructure and brought profound socio-economic consequences to the local population. This article concludes that although the road primarily served colonial interests, its enduring legacy significantly influenced the socio-economic transformation of the regions it traversed.

Abstract

The British colonial administration in the early 19th century profoundly reshaped Indonesia’s trade and agricultural systems. This study examines the economic policies introduced under British rule, particularly during Sir Stamford Raffles’ administration, and their impact on Indonesia’s economic transformation. It focuses on key reforms implemented during the British occupation of Java (1811–1816), including changes to trade routes and agricultural policies. The central inquiry explores how these policies influenced local commerce and agricultural practices, with an emphasis on the introduction of the land rent system and the restructuring of the export sector. Employing a historical research approach, this study draws from primary sources such as government records and colonial reports, as well as secondary literature. The findings indicate that British policies accelerated the commercialization of agriculture, altered trade dynamics, and introduced new taxation structures that significantly disrupted traditional economic systems. However, these reforms also placed substantial economic pressures on local communities, exacerbating social inequalities and economic distress. While British interventions yielded short-term economic benefits, they simultaneously set the stage for prolonged colonial exploitation, shaping Indonesia’s economic trajectory in the decades that followed.
