Abstract

Background: Local television has an important role in displaying local culture and identity. This role is becoming crucial amidst the dominance of Jakarta’s national television, which not only broadcasts certain cultures and groups but also tends to be biased. Purpose: This study was conducted to explain how locality is used as a means of negotiation and resistance of local television against the domination of national television. Method: This research was conducted using qualitative methods by taking local television, RBTV, part of the national television network Kompas TV, as a case. Data was collected with in-depth interviews, observations, and documents. Result: This research shows that although local television has limited broadcast time (5 hours), it creatively uses locality to negotiate and resist the domination of national television. RBTV uses three tactics to bargain its position with Kompas TV. First, they negotiate the presenter’s standard. For instance, RBTV welcomes presenters who speak at standard speed but does not accept people with oriental faces and Jakarta accents. Second, they broadcast local communities to increase engagement with the audience. Third, they broadcast local culture, such as tradition, customs, food, and fashion. Conclusion: RBTV makes the most of its time to serve and show the local community. Something that Jakarta national television cannot do well. Implications: Local television has become an “arena” for cultural battles and acts as an actor. The thesis of imperialism and cultural domination in the context of RBTV fails. This research suggests the importance of studies with a local perspective so that the dialogue between local, national and global cultures can be investigated.

Abstract

This article is a research conducted in the cultural tourism village of Koto Sentajo. The research was initiated by creating a network with various related advice and assistance in improving the quality of local community skills through training and hands-on practice which aims to be able to help increase income for the village. Apart from the collection of Rumah Godang, this tourist village is also enriched with natural beauty such as protected forests, rice fields and rivers that have interesting potentials for the benefit of local residents. However, all the potential of this tourist village has not been well mapped as a tourist attraction and is supported by tourism promotion management. This then becomes an interesting object of research on how all the potentials of this tourist village can be mapped and helps strengthen community independence in managing existing tourism potential. This research puts forward the method of direct local community participation in data collection which is also supported by the method of interviews, observation and literature study. The research succeeded in carrying out a comprehensive mapping of tourism potential on a number of tourist objects, cultural attractions, culinary delights and local arts. In terms of strengthening the role, the community has begun to be able to receive live in tours through various involvement of tourism activities in their daily activities. This new phenomenon in the life of cultural village communities is an indication that the community can grow and develop in terms of tourism through inclusive behavior in accepting tourists and at the same time promoting local tourism potential towards e-tourism

Abstract

Gemala Sari village, located on the outermost island adjacent to Malaysia and the Indonesian island of Batam, holds a natural and exotic beauty. The challenging condition of access roads to the villages will add to the challenges of the natural tourist adventurers who are currently being loved now. This becomes interesting if the village community independently wants to manage the ecotourism potential while at the same time introducing other potential potentials in the village. The red lake is caused by the red water due to the swampy ground. The red lake is still somewhat closed and has not been touched by the ignorant hands of the community so that the red lake is still maintained its naturalness. Independent community service activities in collaboration with students of the University of Riau develop the natural potential into their thematic programs. The implementation method is in the form of assistance in realizing ecotourism, and the results of the output in the form of promotional videos of Tasik Merah ecotourism are expected to begin to open people's eyes to develop this potential. From the results of the evaluation of assistance, it is very necessary for the participation of extension participants, especially the local government, to be able to manage this potential on their own. The team hopes that this activity can foster their motivation to be selective and active in media. Smart and critical attitude in media that is grown makes them village youths become a virus for their friends who have not participated in tourism promotion. They also hope that the activity can be carried out sustainably, bearing in mind that this is not just education but also entertainment and foster motivation in developing the country by utilizing the potential around them.

Abstract

Films often represent masculinities influenced by social constructions produced and legitimised by the state. This research examines how the state shapes multiple forms of masculinity through the film Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas. The film critiques the hegemonic masculinity constructed by the state, while also illustrating that masculinity is not monolithic. Instead, it consists of diverse and sometimes conflicting contextually negotiated constructions. This study uses multimodal discourse analysis to explore the interrelationship between the state, masculinities, and gender representation within the film. The findings reveal that the state plays a significant role in maintaining hegemonic masculinity through policies and regulations that reinforce patriarchal norms. However, the film also opens up spaces for renegotiation, particularly for heterosexual men who fail to conform to dominant standards, allowing them to reclaim recognition within the masculine hierarchy. Furthermore, the film, produced in the Reformation era, set in the Orde Baru era, reflects a transitional moment where representations of masculinity become more fluid and contested. In a patriarchal system, while masculinity is still maintained through social control mechanisms, its boundaries are increasingly permeable, enabling cultural shifts and new gender negotiations. This research contributes to gender and media studies by showing how films, particularly Seperti Dendam Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas, can challenge and disrupt patriarchal constructions of masculinity shaped by the state, thereby opening up new avenues for understanding and redefining masculinity.
