Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Jamu is a traditional herbal drink from Indonesia that has been inherited from generation to generation. Jamu drinks have a variety of recipes since their ingredients are derived from a combination of typical Indonesian spices that can be obtained in local markets. Previously, jamu was frequently associated with a bitter taste, but due to improvements and innovations, it may now adapt to the preferences of the younger generation. Moreover, modification of a recipe's look involving different hues may cause consumers to speculate about its taste. This study examines taste perception from the Indonesian traditional herbal drinks "jamu" color for the younger generation by using photo products image. The research method was conducted through experimentation by using a questionnaire and forum discussion in 2 phases on 111 visual communication students with an average age of 21.7 years. Results: white, red, blue, and yellow colors were preferred by the majority of participants, followed by orange and brownish-red colors, which were still mostly acceptable. However, brown and green were perceived as the colors that participants disliked the most. Based on the result of this experiment, it can be concluded that human perception of color and taste can also be applied to traditional herbal medicine; this result supports the innovative exploration of jamu recipes that can adapt to the tastes of the younger generation. The result of this study shows that perception is influenced by previous experience; several times, the data showed significantly that colors such as milk or common fruit juice would be perceived the same as the taste of jamu. Furthermore, these findings strengthen various previous studies that the color will be able to make humans perceive its taste; although sometimes the perception is wrong, it can be used as an important reference for industries. In addition, the results of this study also show that the perception of color can be done without the need to see the product directly.

Abstract

Photography has established itself as a dominant force in contemporary art, yet its boundaries are continuously challenged by experimental practices that merge traditional photographic principles with elements drawn from fine art traditions, such as painting. This presents a critical issue: how can photography evolve conceptually and aesthetically without losing its fundamental identity? This research aims to develop a framework for creating photographic artworks that explore the representational limits of the medium through bold experimentation while preserving its core principles. Employing G. Sullivan’s framework of interpretation, structure, and critical inquiry, the study examines how experimental practices transform photography into photographic imagery, pushing the medium to its conceptual and aesthetic vanishing points. The findings reveal that at these boundaries, photographic imagery transcends traditional representation and evolves into an ideological foundation, demonstrating the medium’s capacity for profound conceptual expression. Despite these transformations, the study concludes that experimentation does not compromise the essential nature of photography—its unique ability to evoke ostensibly truthful memories. By identifying and analyzing these dynamics, the research underscores the enduring relevance and adaptability of photography in contemporary art, highlighting its potential to navigate new creative frontiers while maintaining its intrinsic connection to reality.

Abstract

Comics have increasingly been recognized as multimodal cultural texts that combine visual and verbal elements to construct narrative meaning and ideological perspectives. Within historical comics, character representation plays an important role in shaping how historical actors and events are interpreted by audiences. However, studies examining how visual and verbal elements jointly articulate ideological meanings through character representation remain relatively limited, particularly in the context of Indonesian historical comics. This study aims to examine how the character Herman Johannes is represented in the comic Komando Rajawali 05: The Final Battle and how this representation contributes to the reinterpretation of historical narratives about the Indonesian independence struggle. Using a qualitative approach based on Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA), the study analyzes selected comic panels that depict Herman Johannes through the interaction of dialogue, visual composition, symbolic objects, and character gestures. The analysis reveals that the character is constructed as a civilian scientist whose intellectual expertise function as an alternative form of strategic contribution within the struggle of independence narrative. Visual elements such as books, spatial positioning, and gesture symbolism work together with verbal dialogue to redefine knowledge as a form of power alongside military action. These findings highlight the role of comics as cultural media capable of negotiating dominant historical narratives and expanding the representation of historical agency beyond military-centered perspectives in Indonesian independence discourse.

Abstract

Visual culture understands cinematic practice not merely as aesthetic expression, but as a site of social meaning production shaped by the relationships between medium, space, and audience participation. Within this framework, expanded cinema opens new possibilities for experimental film practices that transcend conventional representational boundaries through multisensory and reflective experiences situated between reality, archive, and imagination. This research examines the concept of TRISIKON (three situations and conditions: live action, documentation–footage, and animation) as a cinematic creation model that manifests Indonesian cultural diversity through the dialectic of Chaos–Harmony, defined as the convergence of creative uncertainty and compositional order. Through a case study of the work Anemoia Utopia, Chaos–Harmony (cultural diversity) is interpreted not as a binary opposition but as a dynamic space reflecting relationships between humans, nature, and non-human entities within Indonesia’s plural cultural context. This study employs an art-based research methodology combined with a hermeneutic approach to interpret visual symbols, rhythms, and nonlinear narrative structures as intersections between aesthetic experience and social reality. The findings indicate that TRISIKON blurs the boundaries between documentation, performativity, and animation, transforming cinema into a participatory space that invites collective interpretation. Consequently, TRISIKON functions not only as an artistic method but also as an epistemological framework within visual culture studies, offering an understanding of cinema as a fluid and continually transforming cultural practice.

Abstract

In the contemporary context, the significance of utilizing online media as aninformation portal cannot be overstated. This importance is particularlypronounced during the Covid-19 pandemic, as people actively seek informationthrough online platforms to meet their informational requirements. The primaryobjective of this research is to investigate the visual elements employed in Covid19 campaigns, with each element carrying meaningful representations. Toaccomplish this, the researcher employs visual culture studies to analyze Covid19 campaigns from a neurophysiological perspective. The methodology involvesemploying a semantic differential scale and principal components analysis(PCA) with the participation of 22 respondents, who assess 12 binary pairedadjective concepts. The analysis centers on four images sourced from the onlinemedia platform www.covid19.go.id. The findings indicate that people perceivevisual objects influenced by technology in a manner that involves recognition. Each visual element serves as a representation of knowledge and is linked tospecific ideas. From a modern neurophysiological standpoint, technologymediated visual elements lead to logical and constructive outcomes whileexhibiting unique affordabilities. These research findings impart valuableinsights to the Government of Indonesia, underscoring the importance ofconsidering physiological, affective, and aesthetic aspects of visual elements informulating their pandemic campaign policies.
