Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dental caries are caused by multiple factors, including both internal and external influences on individuals. The Kedungmundu Health Center area ranks first in the prevalence of dental caries among elementary school students, with 3.739 affected children. If left untreated, caries can lead to infection, spread to other teeth, and negatively affect overall oral health. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of pop-up books in improving dental caries knowledge among elementary school students. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a pre-post control group approach. The sample consisted of 66 students aged 10-11 years from SDN Sendangmulyo 01 Semarang, selected through simple random sampling. The participants were divided into two groups 33 in the experimental group and 33 in the control group. Statistical analysis was performed using a paired t-test. Results: Prior to the intervention, a majority of control participants (81.8%) and experimental participants (57.6%) displayed good understanding of dental caries. Following the counseling session, the experimental group exhibited significant improvement, with 81.8% attaining good knowledge compared to 60.6% in the control group. Statistical analysis revealed significant knowledge gains in the experimental group (p=0.006), confirming pop-up book media as an effective educational tool. Conclusion: Educational counseling using pop-up book media is effective in increasing dental caries knowledge among elementary school students.KEYWORDSSchool age children, dental health education, pop-up books

The methods used in this community service included lectures, training, simulations, independent practice, and initial (pre-test) and final (post-test) data collection using questionnaires. The participants in this activity were health cadres from the Sendangmulyo sub-district, Semarang City. Descriptive analysis was performed to determine the effect before and after. The community service program for health cadres proved effective in increasing the cadres' knowledge. There was an increase in the health cadres' knowledge about infection prevention efforts through the SIMAK method and the empowerment of health cadres in conducting independent practices for early detection of dental caries, gingivitis, and manifestations of HIV/AIDS in the oral cavity. Empowerment by providing counseling and training to cadres can create more competent cadres who are able to provide dental health education to the community. This can reduce the prevalence of dental and oral diseases and improve the dental health of the community. Keywords: Health Empowerment, Health Cadres, Dental and Oral Health, Infection Control Methods

Abstract

Deciduous tooth eruption is a fundamental physiological milestone in toddler growth that indicates the maturation of the stomatognathic system. This study aimed to analyze the sociodemographic determinants of parents—specifically education, occupation, income, and health insurance ownership—on the eruption of deciduous teeth in toddlers. This analytical observational research employed a crosssectional design involving 167 toddlers in Pedurungan Tengah Subdistrict, selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected through intraoral examinations and validated questionnaires, then analyzed using the Chi-square test (p<0.05). The research findings revealed that the majority of toddlers had normal eruption patterns, yet statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between father’s education (p=0.554), mother’s education (p=0.284), father’s occupation (p=0.578), mother’s occupation (p=0.220), parental income (p=0.900), or National Health Insurance (JKN) ownership (p=0.091) with tooth eruption status. In conclusion, parental sociodemographic factors are not direct determinants of deciduous tooth eruption in this population, suggesting that biological factors or specific nutritional intake may play a more dominant role than social status. These results imply that dental health promotion should target all socioeconomic layers equally, focusing on nutritional quality rather than economic capacity.
