Abstract

Rawang Panca Arga District as the largest of centra rice production in Asahan Regency, must be studied its irrigation system of rice field to hold out and increase production. The purpose of this research was to study the rice production potential in Sungai Bunut irrigation fields in Rawang Panca Arga district Asahan regency in achieving the maximum level of rice production based on sun  radiation level, time to grow rice, and rice variety. This research also studied the ratio between irrigation field and crops field, the ratio between technical irrigation and pre technical and conventional irrigation and reliability of existing irrigation networks. In the year of 2009-2013, the results indicated that the irrigation network reliability was not good enough. The average ratio between technical irrigation and pre technical and conventional irrigation was 0,35, the average  ratio between irrigation field and crops field was 1,9 and the rice production target was 56,75%. keywords: rice, production target, production potential, irrigation network.

Abstract

Pineapple is a unique tropical fruit. Beside it has sharp scales on its skin, it also has a juicy texture and it has sharp eyes through the outer flesh. This research was held to modify and to expand the pineapple peeler in order to simplified pineapple peeling with ring blade so we could peel a pineapple better and to compare the result to the previous blade. As the name, this blade has shaped like a ring and the cutting side was honed and was sharpened. The capacity of pineapple peeler using ring blade was 39,05 kg/hour. The criteria of peeled pinapple could be seen that there was no pineapple eyes on the outer flesh of the fruit. Losses fruit percentage using ring blade was 33,30%. Keywords : modification, pineapple peeler. : ring blade

Abstract

Capacity constraints of Mechanical cofee skin peeler is one of the obstacles in increasing coffee production. To overcome this, we need a mechanical coffee skin  peeler that has been modified. The study was conducted with the study of literature and make observations about the mechanical coffee skin peeler that has been designed Johanes Mikael Manulang, and then designed the coupling components that would be modified. The effective capacity of the tool was 206.57 kg/h or 1441.44 kg/day. The value of the effective capacity of the equipment was greater than the previous coffee skin peeler i.e 117.39 kg/h or 821.73 kg/day. Basic costs to be incurred was Rp. 73 953 /kg in year 1, Rp. 68.917 / kg in year 2, Rp. 67.241/kg in year 3, Rp. 66.404 /kg in the 4th year, and Rp. 65.903 /kg in the 5th year. This equipment would reach the break even point after peeling coffee at 9124.41 kg/year. Net present value of these equipment with 6% interest rate was Rp. 279,299,067.30 which means that the business is feasible. Internal rate of return was 7.21%.   Keyword: modification, pulper equipment, skin

Abstract

Food processing by cooking needs a special technique to maintain the nutrition of the food. This research was aimed to measure the effective frying temperature in vacuum frying (vacuum pump type). This research was carried out at Agricultural Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture USU in March – April 2014 using non factorial randomized block design with five levels, i.e. 75oC, 80oC, 85oC, 90oC, and 95oC. Parameters observed were water content, loss of oil, organoleptic value, and economic analysis. The results showed that frying temperature had highly significant effects on water content, loss of oil, and organoleptic value, but it showed that there was no highly significant effect on taste. Economic analysis showed that investment with this equipment was non - profitable. Keywords: Snake Fruit, Temperature, Chips, and Vacuum Frying.

Abstract

This research was done to test the effect of grinder edge on the effective capacity of the equipment,  percentage of losses material, and percentage of yield. This research was using non factorial completely randomized design. It was found that the capacity of the equipment,  percentage of losses material, and percentage of yield on two grinder edge are 12,72 kg/hour, 7,00%, dan 93,00% respectively.  On three grinder edge are 16,44 kg/hour, 7,67%, dan 92,33% respectively. On four grinder edge are 16,01 kg/hour, 9,00% dan 91,00% respectively. The results showed  that number of grinder edge had significant effect on the effective capacity, and had no effect on the percentage of losses material, and percentage of yield. Abstract

Chopping is one way of size reduction of solids into smaller pieces to produce solids of a certain size. Chopping with a mechanical equipment has not much been done due to lack of knowledge and limitation of existing equipment of the farmers. In fact, if it can be done can increase farmers' income. The aim of the research was to test the performance of oil palm fronds chopper machine designed by Agricultural Mechanization Unit in North Sumatra Province using oil palm fronds as a raw material and analyze its operating costs. Observed parameters were effective capacity, yield of chopping, the percentage of materials left behind, and fuel consumption of the equipment. The results showed that the effective capacity of the equipment was 287,29Kg/hour. Chopping yield was 94,2%. The percentage of materials left behind was 5,2%. Fuel consumption was 0,44 L/hour. Cost of Analysis was Rp. 53,9/Kg for the first year, Rp. 54,29/Kg for the second year, Rp. 54,48/Kg for the third year, Rp.54,79/Kg for the fourth year, and Rp. 55,12/Kg for the fifth year. BEP was 62.209 Kg in the first year, 65.862 Kg in the second year, 67.759 Kg in the third year, 70.755 Kg in the fourth year and 73.947 Kg in the fifth year. The IRR was 39,17%.
