Abstract

This study is a literature review aimed at examining in depth the concepts, characteristics, learning difficulties, and applications of quadratic functions in secondary mathematics education. The research employs a qualitative approach by analyzing ten articles published between 2019 and 2025 from both national and international journals. The findings indicate that the quadratic function is a fundamental topic in the mathematics curriculum, playing a crucial role in developing higher-order mathematical thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, and problem-solving. It also serves as a foundation for understanding more advanced topics such as calculus, analytic geometry, and optimization. However, various studies have found that students continue to face significant learning difficulties, including misconceptions related to the shape of the parabola graph, understanding the discriminant value, and connecting algebraic forms to real-world contexts. To address these issues, research suggests that technology-assisted learning—particularly through interactive software such as GeoGebra—has proven effective in enhancing conceptual understanding, motivation, and student engagement. Therefore, this review highlights the importance of strengthening conceptual understanding, applying contextual learning approaches, and integrating digital technology as innovative strategies for teaching quadratic functions at the secondary education level.

Abstract

Learning quadratic functions in high school still faces various challenges, primarily due to the abstract nature of the concepts, which require students to have strong analytical thinking skills. These difficulties often result in low student understanding of the relationship between quadratic equations and parabola graphs, as well as limitations in applying these concepts to mathematical problem-solving. GeoGebra, as a technology-based learning tool, offers interactive visualizations that allow students to observe the real-time changes in the shape of a parabola when the coefficients in a quadratic equation are modified. A literature review of recent studies reveals that the use of GeoGebra significantly enhances conceptual understanding, mathematical representation skills, and student motivation. Its effectiveness further increases when combined with appropriate teaching strategies, such as the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), which encourages active involvement and concept exploration by students. However, several challenges remain, including limited access to devices, teachers’ readiness to utilize technology, and suboptimal infrastructure support. Therefore, the integration of GeoGebra into quadratic function learning requires careful planning, teacher training, and adequate facility support to maximize its benefits and improve the overall quality of mathematics education.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan (1) untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah pada materi Luas permukaan dan volume prisma segitiga telah memenuhi aspek kevalidan, kepraktisan dan keefektifan, dan (2) untuk mengetahui hasil belajar kemampuan pemecahan masalah peserta didik setelah menggunakan LKPD berbasis liveworksheet. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam pengembangan ini adalah ADDIE. Hasil penelitian memaparkan bahwa: (1) LKPD berbasis liveworksheet untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah yang dikembangkan memenuhi kriteria kevalidan pada ahli materi sebesar 3,62 dan ahli media sebesar 3,68, (2 2. Hasil belajar pada kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa yang diberi pembelajaran menggunakan LKPD liveworksheet memperoleh kenaikan rata-rata sebesar 29,79, dari tes kemampuan awal (pretest) dimana rata-rata siswa adalah 38,44 meningkat menjadi 84.23 pada tes kemampuan akhir (postest). Dan berdasarkan analisis Gain diperoleh rata-rata peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis secara keseluruhan sebesar 0,75, dimana 24,12% mengalami peningkatan dalam kategori sedang dan 69 87% mengalami peningkatan dalam kategori tinggi.

Abstract

Purpose: This study explore the self-determination profiles of postgraduate mathematics education students, emphasizing how autonomy, competence, and relatedness contribute to their readiness and motivation to pursue teaching as a professional career. Method: A quantitative-descriptive approach was employed, using a validated self-determination questionnaire distributed to 47 postgraduate students and alumni from 2020 to 2024. The instrument measured three SDT dimensions (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) through 24 positive and negative statements. Descriptive and comparative analyses were applied to identify dominant motivational patterns. Finding: Findings revealed high mean scores for autonomy and competence, indicating students’ confidence in decision-making and mastery of pedagogical knowledge. Relatedness also scored strongly, reflecting solid interpersonal engagement with peers and lecturers. Collectively, these outcomes depict a balanced SDT profile among future mathematics teachers. Significance: The study demonstrates that strong self-determination enhances students’ readiness to enter the teaching profession with intrinsic motivation, pedagogical confidence, and collaborative awareness. Strengthening these three SDT dimensions within teacher education curricula can cultivate mathematics educators who are reflective, adaptive, and committed to continuous professional development. This research underscores that fostering autonomy, competence, and relatedness is not only central to improving mathematics learning but also to shaping sustainable teacher professionalism in the modern educational landscape.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical literacy skills of male Grade IX students SMP Negeri 6 Medan, to describe the mathematical literacy skills of female Grade IX students SMP Negeri 6 Medan, and to determine the level of achievement of mathematical literacy skills of Grade IX students SMP Negeri 6 Medan. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The subjects of this research were 26 students of class IX-K at SMP Negeri 6 Medan in the academic year 2025/2026. Data collection in this study was carried out through mathematical literacy tests and interviews. The results of the study show: (1) Male students had average percentage scores on three indicators of mathematical literacy, namely understanding (43.33%), application (50%), and reasoning (8.33%). (2) Female students had average percentage scores on three indicators of mathematical literacy, namely understanding (68.18%), application (81.82%), and reasoning (40.91%). (3) The achievement level of mathematical literacy skills for female students was 61.11%, which falls into the ‘fair’ category, while the achievement level for male students was 47.22%, which falls into the ‘poor’ category.
