Abstract

Abstract

This research begins with the phenomenon of farmers in North Central Timor Regency who apply local wisdom in corn farming ritual activities as a belief inherited from their ancestors who believe they have the power to rely on natural spirits as guardians of the nature where they live, including in guarding the corn farming that is being carried out. This research aims to determine the description of the local wisdom model of rituals held by farmers in corn farming. Sampling was carried out among corn farmers using the technique: first, determining key informants using Snowball Sampling as many as 7 people. Second, the determination of informants was carried out purposively, aimed at 10 figures related to corn farming, so the total number of respondents was 17 people. Primary data was collected using a questionnaire guide, in-depth interviews (FGD) and secondary data was obtained from the Agriculture Service, BPS and related agencies. The results of the analysis show that the local wisdom model for changing farmer behavior has not worked optimally. And farmers in general are aware that the rituals of corn farming activities are carried out in accordance with their beliefs and beliefs and have been carried out for generations taking into account the farming cycle they have and greatly influence changes in farmers' behavior in corn farming. Harmonious farmer relations in carrying out corn farming rituals are currently being carried out but in certain parts it has not yet gone as expected, namely the Tapoen Fini ritual (Removing Seeds), Pen Sufa' (Time for Corn to Flower), Tah Fe'u (new food), T 'sek Pena (Breaking Corn), Takbu' Pena (harvesting corn), Tsef Pena smanaf (Opening the Spirit of Corn), T'hab nin (preparation for storage), Ta sae be noe Lopo (putting into Lopo).

Abstract

This research focuses on communication patterns, especially communication built within the Karya Baru farmer group to support farming and the development of the farmer group. The aim of this research is to find out the description of the internal and external factors of farmers in the Karya Baru farmer group, to know the picture of field agricultural extension (PPL) communication in the Karya Baru farmer group, and to find out what factors influence field agricultural extension (PPL) communication in the Karya Baru farmer group. The methods used in this research are mixed methods. Determining informants used the purposive sampling method with the technique of taking respondents by census (saturated sampling). The population and sample in this study used a purposive sampling technique, namely all members of the "Karya Baru" farmer group in Suanae Village, West Miomaffo District, North Central Timor Regency, with 23 members. Data collection was carried out using survey methods, observation, and data collection using questionnaires given directly to respondents. The results of this study state that the characteristics of respondents are internal factors that have a real influence on communication patterns, namely length of farming and cosmopolitan, while external factors, namely the role of farmer groups and agricultural extension methods, have a real influence on communication, namely the individual approach and group approach, which also have a real influence on communication.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the internal and external characteristics of agricultural extension workers and analyze their influence on extension performance in North Central Timor Regency. A quantitative approach was employed using a survey method involving all 126 active agricultural extension workers, supplemented by qualitative data through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) using a snowball sampling technique. Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was used to analyze the collected data. The results show that internal factors such as productive age, very high formal education, long working experience, high work motivation, and high income positively contribute to extension performance, while areas of expertise and training still require improvement. External factors such as the availability of facilities and access to agricultural technology were categorized as high, whereas media consumption, farmer participation, land potential, and the reward system were relatively low. The research model revealed that internal and external factors together explain 81.5% of the variance in extension performance (R² = 0.815), with an overall model fit of 96.3% (Q² = 0.963). These findings highlight the importance of enhancing areas of expertise and increasing media information consumption to strengthen agricultural extension performance in the future.

Abstract

Corn farmers on the RI–RDTL border frequently face limited resources in developing their agricultural potential, despite continuous government efforts to provide support and facilitation. Addressing this issue requires an understanding of both internal and external factors related to farmers, innovative characteristics, the role of information media, and the involvement of extension workers. This study aims to examine the determinants influencing maize farmers’ practices in West Miomaffo District, North Central Timor Regency. Data were collected through a survey of 161 corn growers and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The analysis revealed that communication efficacy and farmer-related external factors significantly influence behavioral changes, with critical ratio values exceeding the threshold (CR > 1.96). Conversely, internal farmer factors, innovation characteristics, and the role of extension workers did not have a significant effect on practice changes. These findings highlight that strengthening external support systems and improving communication strategies are more decisive for behavioral transformation among maize farmers in the border area than internal or innovation-driven factors.
