Abstract

Background: The concern surrounding the physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with breast cancer emerged during COVID-19. However, there is a lack of sufficient studies that have specifically addressed this issue. It is crucial to emphasize the evaluation of this aspect as it significantly impacts the enhancement of future physical and mental HRQoL for these patients.Purpose: This study investigated the determinants of physical and mental HRQoL among patients with breast cancer during COVID-19.Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted between September and October 2022, participation involved 260 patients diagnosed with breast cancer, selected through convenience sampling. Our observation focused on assessing the outcomes of physical and mental HRQoL using the Short Form (SF-12) questionnaire for data collection. Additionally, the data underwent analysis via binary logistic regression. Results: Respondents aged <50 years (p=0.010; aOR=2.08; 95% CI=1.18–3.67), unemployed (p=0.022; aOR=2.29; 95% CI=1.16–4.53), and had high depression (p=0.026; aOR=2.41; 95% CI=1.13–5.12) have a more likelihood to have low physical HRQoL. In addition, unemployed respondents (p=<0.001; aOR=4.15; 95% CI=2.14–8.04) and had high anxiety (p=0.004; aOR=2.71; 95% CI=1.38–5.33) have more likelihood to have low mental HRQoL.Conclusion: In this study, it was found that anxiety, depression, and unemployed respondents were associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing lower physical and mental HRQoL. Nurses and healthcare workers should prioritize addressing psychological issues such as anxiety and depression among breast cancer patients, emphasizing the necessity for interventions aimed at alleviating these concerns.

Abstract

Self-care management is crucial for preventing complications in individuals with diabetes mellitus, which is influenced by various factors, including disease perception and the duration of diabetes. This study aims to examine the relationship, direction, and strength of the association between disease perception, duration of illness, and self-care management in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 74 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ) and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA-Revised). Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank test. The findings showed that the average score for disease perception was 48.59, with an average illness duration of 5.00 years, and an average self-care score of 48.58. A significant positive correlation was found between disease perception and self-care management (p-value = 0.00), while no significant correlation was found between the duration of diabetes and self-care management (p-value = 0.132). These results suggest that enhancing patients' perception of their disease may improve self-care management. It is recommended that more intensive and targeted educational interventions be implemented to improve patients' positive perceptions and encourage more consistent self-care practices.

Abstract

Genetic factors play an essential role in causing breast cancer, especially in children who have mothers with breast cancer. Such children possess a two times greater chance of suffering breast cancer. Rarely did studies use qualitative methods to explore the experience of children from mothers diagnosed with cancer in cancer awareness and prevention. Therefore, this research used qualitative research by means of a phenomenological approach. Interviews were conducted for 15 days by means of a purposive sampling data collection technique. Data were taken from in-depth interviews with women at risk of breast cancer, whose mothers were diagnosed with breast cancer. At the end of data collection, data saturation occurred for the 10th participant. After the data was analyzed using the Collaizi technique, it was extracted, then it was classified into 3 themes as follows: 1) Lack of knowledge in recognizing signs and symptoms of breast cancer, 2) The positive role of husband's support, 3) Anxiety in early detection of breast cancer. This research emphasizes the importance of a woman who is at risk of breast cancer from her mother getting counselling and health education about cancer awareness by reflecting on her mother diagnosed with breast cancer. It is proved that educating the husband probably affects the prevention of breast cancer.

Abstract

Increasing awareness of breast cancer risk requires knowledge to identify risk factors, symptoms, attitudes, and behaviors for conducting breast screening. However, the facts showed that most female students from non-medical university students had not had adequate awareness of breast cancer prevention. This study aimed to investigate breast cancer awareness among female non-medical university students. This study used quantitative design with cross-sectional design. A sampling technique used a non-probability sampling technique which conducted to 370 non-medical students. A modified Breast Cancers Awareness Scale (BCAS-1) questionnaire was used to measure level awareness of students regarding risk factors of breast cancer. The results showed that most respondents were 19 years old (51.4%) and most respondents (69.2%) have a moderate level of awareness. The level of awareness has five domains, all of respondents which are mostly moderate: knowledge about risk factors (72.4%); signs of breast cancer (54.6%); attitudes toward breast cancer prevention (71.1%); barriers to screening (70.5%), and behaviours related to breast cancer awareness (66.5%). This study concluded that non-medical students had moderate knowledge, so it is recommended a health promotion and special training to perform breast self-examination regularly for university students, especially non-medical students.

Abstract

Introduction: Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis must accommodate significant lifestyle modifications, emphasizing nutritional management and fluid restriction, to realize optimal therapeutic outcomes due to the stringent adherence required by the treatment. Deviations from adherence can precipitate complications, compromising the clinical status of patients. Methods: This study employed a quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional methodology to evaluate 245 ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis who met the inclusion criteria. Data were acquired utilizing a multistage sampling technique, incorporating proportional random and consecutive sampling, and employing questionnaires addressing knowledge, family support, and perception (B-IPQ). Results: The participants' average age was 51.37±11.804 years, with males representing 60% (147 individuals) of the sample. A significant 81.6% (200 participants) demonstrated proficient knowledge levels. Family support was assessed as satisfactory for 90.6% (222 participants), and 82% (201 participants) exhibited positive perceptions. The analysis identified a significant correlation between Duration of Illness and IDWG (p<0.05), evidenced by a Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) of 0.153. A noteworthy inverse relationship between knowledge levels and Ureum (p<0.05) was also observed. Conclusions: The findings suggest a correlation between knowledge and nutritional management, particularly regarding urea levels, while the duration of hemodialysis is correlated with IDWG. Conversely, factors related to family support did not demonstrate a significant correlation with aspects of nutrition and fluid management, such as urea, creatinine, Hb, sodium, and potassium.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a major public health concern worldwide, largely driven by unhealthy lifestyles such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and excess body weight. Early identification of modifiable risk factors, including cholesterol levels, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity, is crucial for preventing hypertension. This community-based screening activity was conducted on 7 August 2025, at SMA Negeri 9 Padang, targeting teachers, administrative staff, and food vendors. A total of 80 adults participated in the study using convenience sampling. The activity included health education followed by individual health screenings, which consisted of blood pressure measurement, BMI calculation, cholesterol testing using portable point-of-care devices, and physical activity assessment using structured questionnaires. The results showed that 45% of participants were classified as prehypertensive, 83.8% had high cholesterol levels, and 66.3% were overweight or obese. Most participants (72.5%) reported moderate physical activity levels, which fell short of the World Health Organization’s recommendations. These findings indicate a high risk of hypertension among adults in the school community, particularly related to elevated cholesterol, excess body weight, and insufficient physical activity. We identified hypertension risk factors and provided health education and individualized screening feedback to raise awareness of cardiovascular risks and emphasize the importance of regular screening.

Abstract

The increase in e-cigarette users in society continues to grow, which can endanger bodily health. This study aims to determine the factors associated with e-cigarette users in the "Vape Gaming Store" association in the GOR H. Agus Salim area in Padang City. This research method is quantitative research. The research design is an analytic correlation with a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study amounted to 50 people, with sampling techniques using total sampling. The results of the study were analyzed using the chi-square test. Based on the results of the chi-square test, there is a relationship between friend factors, knowledge factors, social media factors, and lifestyle factors, with a p-value <0.05. In this study, the social media factor is highly influential, increasing the likelihood of e-cigarette use by 9000 times. This factor can be utilized to help disseminate information and educate through social media by giving warnings about the long-term dangers of e-cigarettes in marketing content or photos.
