Abstract

Abstract

Earthquake is a natural disaster that can occur suddenly and cause damage and loss of life. Therefore, it is important to have disaster preparedness to reduce the impact, especially on vulnerable groups such as the elderly. Therefore, a disaster education program is directed at increasing the elderly's perception of earthquake preparedness. This activity involved providing educational materials and simulations to 15 elderly people for one day. After the training, interviews were conducted to evaluate their perceptions regarding knowledge and attitudes towards disaster preparedness. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with 5 elderly people involved in the program. The results of the interviews revealed that the knowledge of the elderly about earthquakes still needs to be improved. Even so, most of them were able to demonstrate their ability to prepare disaster preparedness bags. However, there is potential to further enhance their knowledge and skills. This includes an understanding of the contents of a disaster preparedness bag, the actions to be taken during an earthquake, and their role in educating the community about disaster mitigation. It is hoped that this kind of program will have a long-term impact by increasing the understanding and awareness of the elderly on earthquake preparedness. Through an educational approach and their active involvement in simulation exercises, the elderly can become agents of change in improving disaster preparedness in the community.

Abstract

Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes, resulting in significant financial losses and casualties, especially in Padang. A major factor contributing to the high number of victims is the general public's lack of knowledge and preparedness for such disasters. Teenagers, including middle school students, are particularly vulnerable. Consequently, at SMPN 24 in Padang, virtual reality (VR) technology has been introduced to educate students about disaster preparedness. This simulation provided a realistic learning experience, allowing students to practice for emergencies without endangering themselves. At SMPN 24 in Padang, 32 students underwent an earthquake simulation using the VR approach. The results indicated an enhanced understanding of disaster preparedness among the students, with the median comprehension score rising from 59.00 to 60.50. Evaluations suggest that VR technology effectively increases students' disaster awareness and readiness. In summary, thanks to the virtual reality (VR) training, students at SMPN 24 in Padang feel better equipped to face potential earthquake disasters.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of hemodialysis patients continues to increase, especially in the productive age group, where these individuals are important contributors to the workforce. Compliance with hemodialysis greatly influences patient productivity, has a direct impact on morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, cultivating positive perceptions is very important, especially with regard to patient characteristics. The aim of this research is to examine the interplay between patients' perceptions of illness and the associated characteristics in hemodialysis patients within the productive age groupMethods: This research is a cross-sectional quantitative study that involved 191 purposively sampled respondents. Data collection utilized a questionnaire encompassing demographic information, and patients' perceptions of their illness were evaluated through the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ). The analysis employed the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis H tests, with the significance level set at p0.05.Results: The findings indicated an average perception value of 58.53 ± 8.455. A significant relationship exists between the perception of hemodialysis patients and variables such as age, gender, education level, occupation, duration of hemodialysis, and comorbidities (p0.05).Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed a correlation between hemodialysis patient perceptions and their individual characteristics. Consequently, healthcare professionals, with a special emphasis on nurses, should employ a personalized approach to effectively shape positive patient perceptions. This tailored approach should consider individual characteristics due to the diverse needs of patient.

Abstract

Students who gather and do not pay attention to health protocols can be evidence of their low compliance with implementing health protocols. University students, particularly those who come from health faculties, are considered change agents in implementing health protocols. Thus, it is necessary to examine their motivation and attitude toward implementing health protocols. This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-protective motivation and compliance with the nursing students' health protocol. The study was carried out with 253 undergraduate nursing students selected through cluster sampling with a cross-sectional design. The results showed that most of the students complied with the health protocols; some already had motivations related to self-protective motivation against COVID-19 and some already had a positive attitude towards the health protocol. There is a significant relationship between self-protection motivation and compliance with the nursing student health protocol (p-value = 0.000). However, nursing students must increase self-protective motivation and positive attitudes by increasing their understanding and confidence in the dangers of COVID-19 to encourage their obedience to health protocols. More studies need to be conducted to investigate the causes of student non-compliance in implementing health protocols, especially in the campus environment.
