Abstract

Religious character is an essential aspect that must be considered in the learning process because strong religious values can serve as a safeguard against anarchic attitudes, moral decline, and various criminal behaviors commonly found in primary education. Therefore, this study focuses on: (1) how a contextual‑based Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning model is implemented to strengthen the religious character of elementary school students; (2) the strategies used by PAI teachers to develop and reinforce students’ religious character through contextual learning; and (3) the implications of applying the contextual PAI model on strengthening students’ religious character. Islamic Religious Education as a problem‑solving approach cannot be effective if taught merely textually; it needs to be presented contextually. This research employs a qualitative approach with observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection methods, and uses Miles and Huberman’s data analysis techniques, including data grouping, data processing, data verification, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study produced: (1) a contextual‑based PAI learning model for forming students’ religious character; (2) teacher strategies in shaping students’ religious character; and (3) the implications of the contextual PAI model for strengthening students’ religious character.

Abstract

This research seeks to revitalize Sufi ethics as a transformative behavioral framework to prevent bullying in the modern era, focusing on the interpretation of QS. Al-Hujurat [49]: 11 through the perspective of Ibn ‘Ajibah. The study employs a Sufi hermeneutic approach consisting of three methodological steps: textual explanation, uncovering esoteric meanings (ishari), and applying these insights to contemporary ethical and spiritual contexts. The findings indicate that bullying is not merely a social phenomenon but a manifestation of spiritual maladies such as arrogance, malice, and hypocrisy. Textual analysis of the verse reveals a hierarchical prohibition, ranging from outward social conduct to deeper spiritual transgressions. Sufi exegesis highlights fundamental concepts—such as spiritual unity, divine manifestation (tajalli), and self-purification (tazkiyat al-nafs)—as the moral foundation for countering bullying. When applied to cyberbullying, these values yield digital ethical principles, including benevolence in digital interactions, online humility, and digital communal harmony. The research concludes that the revitalization of Sufi ethics offers a more holistic and profound solution compared to conventional approaches by emphasizing the transformation of self-consciousness as the primary preventive measure. These results suggest practical implementations in character education that integrate digital and spiritual dimensions, restorative counseling based on Sufi values, and the integration of spiritual approaches with psychological interventions in bullying cases

Abstract

This article examines the complex and dynamic relationship between Sufism and state power during Indonesia's New Order period. It argues against the prevailing notion that Sufi orders (tarekat) were apolitical or merely retreatist spiritual movements. Instead, the study demonstrates how various tarekat, particularly the Qadiriyya wa Naqsyabandiyya (TQN), underwent significant processes of rationalization, bureaucratization, and political engagement. Through a historical-sociological analysis of primary and secondary literature, the article traces the transformation of Sufism from a primarily rural, charismatic-based tradition into a modern socio-political force. Key findings reveal a pattern of state co-optation, where the regime sought to harness the mass following of the tarekat for developmental legitimacy and political stability. Concurrently, Sufi leaders navigated the political landscape with diverse strategies ranging from active collaboration with the ruling Golkar party, to opposition through Islamic parties, to deliberate neutrality. This period also witnessed the rise of charismatic "living saints" (wali) whose spiritual authority was leveraged for political mobilization. Ultimately, the New Order era was not a period of Sufi decline but one of profound adaptation, where mystical Islam actively negotiated its place within an authoritarian modernizing state, leaving a lasting legacy on Indonesia's religious and political topography.
