Abstract

AbstractThis study examines the difference between the meaning of Indonesian and Malaysian. The data gathered for analysis will be used to determine the level of understanding of the various meanings of Indonesian and Malaysian vocabulary that have the same form but different meanings as well as meaning differences between Indonesian and Malaysian vocabulary that have different forms but have the same meaning. The methodologyused in this study was design an analysis of the different meanings of Indonesian and Malaysian, wich were from a survey distributed to 141 respondents via Google Form. The purpose of this study was to a betterunderstanding of differences in word usage between Indonesian and Malaysian. According to the findings of this study, researcher will produce data on the level off understanding of the different meanings of Indonesianand Malaysian as well as differences in word usage in Indonesian and Malaysian. The level of understanding of respondents related to this study was 78 percent understanding of the correct classification of meanings intoIndonesian vocabulary and 69.6 percent for a good understanding of the correct classification of meanings into to Malaysian vocabulary. In this study, respondents, had a level of understanding of 99 percent for a good understanding of meaning classification into Indonesian vocabulary and 98.7 percent for a good understanding of meaning classifications into the correct Malaysian vocabulary.

Abstract

This reserach investigates the translation of conceptual metaphors from English to Indonesian in the movie Ex Machina, utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology.  The research seeks to categorize the types of metaphors included in the movie, examine the translation of these metaphors in the Indonesian subtitles, and assess the efficacy of the translation procedures in preserving the original conceptual meaning.  The principal data comprises English dialogues with metaphorical terms along with their respective Indonesian subtitles, chosen for their pertinence to Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The researcher used Lakoff & Johnson (1980) framework to sort each of the 10 metaphors into structural, orientational, or ontological metaphors. The researher used Miles & Huberman (1994) interactive approach to analyze the data. This model includes data reduction, data display, and making conclusions.  Molina & Hurtado Albir (2002) translation technique framework helped with the classification and analysis by finding strategies including literal translation, modification, and paraphrase.  The results indicate that numerous conceptual metaphors experience alterations in meaning as a result of cultural and language disparities, whereas others are maintained by meticulous lexical selections.  The predominant approaches discovered underscore the translator's efforts to reconcile meaning retention with naturalness in the target.  This research enhances comprehension of metaphor translation in audiovisual media and underscores the necessity of amalgamating cognitive linguistic theory with translation methodologies to guarantee precise and significant subtitle translation.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the meaning of idiomatic expression and to find out the types of Idiom in Encanto movie script. The researcher used McCharty and O'Dell's theory to analyze the implementation of idiomatic expression occurred in the object of this research. The qualitative research method was applied. The data were collected by watching the Encanto movie several times, determining the words, phrases, or sentences to be analyzed, and then categorizing the terms, phrases, and sentences into types of idioms based on the used theory. The result showed that there were 20 data found namely 7 Simile, 1 Binomial, 2 Proverbs, 1 Euphemism, 2 Clichés, and 6 Fixed Statement. Furthermore, this research can be a valuable information and knowledge for many people in understanding the idiomatic meaning in some media.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and functions of phrasal verbs in five selected articles from The Jakarta Post, published between August and December 2024. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied, following Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of analysis: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The theoretical framework combines Michael Lewis’s Lexical Approach (1993) with classifications of phrasal verbs into transitive, intransitive, separable, inseparable, literal, and figurative categories. Data were drawn from online newspaper articles, while secondary data consisted of books, journals, and prior studies on phrasal verbs. The findings reveal a dominance of figurative and inseparable phrasal verbs across all articles, highlighting their vital role in journalistic discourse. These verbs simplify complex issues, enhance stylistic impact, and make articles accessible to general readers. The study suggests pedagogical implications for English language teaching, particularly in integrating phrasal verbs into classroom instruction, and calls for further research on phrasal verb usage in broader journalistic and literary contexts.
