Abstract

Suprasegmentals are language sounds that accompany phonemes, which can be in the form of sound pressure, length-shortness, and sound vibrations associated with speech segments. Suprasegmentals in this study includes the frequency, intensity, and duration of the sounds produced. This study aims to analyze the differences in frequency, intensity, and duration of the sounds produced by male and female speakers in pronouncing Toba Batak imperative sentences, namely: “beta hita tu topi tao!” which means ‘let's go to the lakeside!’. This research method uses an instrumental approach by maximizing Praat software in analyzing frequency, intensity, and duration. The population and sample taken in this study is the voice of one native male and female speaker. The results of the analysis of this study show, namely: (1) the frequency of male speakers' voices is lower than female speakers; (2) the intensity of male speakers' voices is smaller than female speakers; and (3) the duration of male speakers' voices takes longer than female speakers to say the sentence. From this research, it can be seen that male and female voice differences have relevance to suprasegmental because both focus on the nonsegmental aspects of language, which play an important role in verbal communication. Keywords: suprasegmentals, frequency, duration, intensity

Abstract

The ideational metafunction is one of the main concepts in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), which explains how language represents human experience. This study focuses on the experiential function in President Prabowo Subianto’s speech delivered during the Commemoration of National Teacher’s Day 2024. A qualitative method was employed by analyzing the speech text using the transitivity system to identify processes, participants, and circumstances. The analysis revealed that material processes were predominantly emphasize concrete government actions and educational reforms, portraying the President’s commitment to improving teachers’ welfare and national education quality. The mental processes express empathy and appreciation for teachers, highlighting their dedication and emotional strength in shaping the nation’s future. Meanwhile, the relational processes establish teachers as the moral and intellectual pillars of national development, while extent circumstances reflect the wide scope of the intended policies. These results suggest that the speech highlights the government’s commitment to educational reform and teacher welfare through real and measurable actions. The findings provide new insights into the construction of political discourse in Indonesia and demonstrate how the ideational metafunction serves as a tool to convey ideological positioning in presidential communication. This study contributes to the field of political discourse analysis by providing a functional linguistic perspective on how ideational meanings are constructed in presidential speeches, particularly within Indonesia’s educational context.

Abstract

Interjection is one of the language elements that represent spontaneous and direct expression of emotion. This research aims to describe the form, meaning, and function of interjections in the novel Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, and relate them to the category of emotional expression. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with semantic approach. The research data are sentences and dialogs containing interjections in the novel. The data collection technique is done by reading the text thoroughly, recording the interjections that appear, and classifying them into interjection categories based on Wierzbicka's theory. Data analysis includes identifying interjection forms, explaining literal and contextual meanings, determining the function of interjections in the storyline, and mapping emotion categories based on Jovanovic’s framework. The results show that emotive interjections in the novel mostly represent the emotions of surprise, anger, fear, contempt, and pity; volitive interjections express impatience, enthusiasm, irritation, and sympathy; while cognitive interjections signify triumph, wonder, approval, confusion, and surprise. Interjections not only function as expressions of emotion, but also support character development, create story atmosphere, and move the plot. This research is expected to enrich the semantic study of interjections in literary texts, as well as to serve as a reference.

Noya employed six types of questions, consisting of opening questions, informative questions, Socratic questions, directing questions, alternative questions, and closing questions. These strategies functioned to guide the discussion, clarify political positions, and maintain structured and balanced interactions. The findings indicated that both hosts effectively managed the direction and focus of the conversation, prevented digression from key topics, and enhanced audience understanding of complex legal and political issues. The implications of this research indicated that people could apply effective questioning in daily life to understand complex information and evaluate issues critically. This research contributes to discourse analysis by highlighting the role of questioning strategies in public and political debates, while offering practical insights for hosts, journalists, and educators to guide discussions.
