Abstract

The growth of a porous anodic aluminum oxide (PAAO) layer with fewer cracks on a tubular substrate is quite challenging. The PAAO layer on a curved surface grows slower than that on a flat surface and is susceptible to cracking. This study aims to improve the crack resistance of the PAAO layer grown on a tubular aluminum substrate by adding ethylene glycol (EG). Each bath contained additive concentrations of 0, 5, 10, and 15 vol% EG. Anodization proceeded for 4 h at a temperature of 10 ℃ using the potentiostatic mode at 25 V in a sulfuric acid bath and 40 V in an oxalic acid bath. The crack and pore structure were investigated using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The kinetic curve and FE-SEM investigation indicated that the addition of EG in the bath slowed the growth rate of the PAAO layer in both anodization baths. The lower oxidation rate drastically improved the crack resistance, as revealed by the significant reduction in the crack population and narrower crack width. The additive EG presumably enhanced the electrolyte viscosity and reduced the heating effect released during oxide growth. Consequently, the layer thickness and pore size decreased with the increase in the EG concentration.

Abstract

Prospective science teachers must master pedagogical knowledge (PK) and content knowledge (CK), commonly referred to as Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), before entering the teaching profession. PCK is essential professional knowledge that supports effective science teaching. This study aims to analyze the PCK readiness of prospective science teachers in Indonesia and the Philippines, with a focus on the CK and PK competencies required for teaching in the ASEAN context. The study employed a mixed-methods approach. Survey data were collected from 110 prospective science teachers undertaking field teaching practice in schools in Indonesia and the Philippines. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 participants, consisting of six prospective teachers from each country. The data focused on participants’ understanding and preparation related to pedagogical skills and science subject matter. The results indicate that the overall PCK level of prospective science teachers falls within the “moderately ready” category. However, the proportion of participants classified as “ready” remains relatively low, ranging from 44.9% to 58.5%. These findings suggest a need for strengthening both PK and CK among prospective science teachers. Enhancing PK can be achieved through additional pedagogical education and targeted training programs to improve teaching skills. Meanwhile, improving CK can be supported by providing more specialized science content courses aligned with school curricula prior to teaching practice. PCK readiness plays a crucial role in supporting sustainable development. Beyond integrating pedagogy and content, PCK enables prospective teachers to effectively convey scientific concepts related to sustainability issues: climate change, natural resource conservation, environmentally friendly technologies.

Abstract

The low level of scientific literacy in Indonesia has prompted efforts to improve the quality of science education, particularly through the promotion of science process skills. Practical activities such as experiments and hands-on investigations are indicators of science skill–based learning. However, their implementation is often limited by the lack of adequate laboratory equipment. This study introduces a simple, low-cost experimental kit designed to facilitate the teaching of heat and its transfer processes, specifically for the senior high school level. The study describes the kit construction, provides conceptual explanations of the underlying physics, and examines student participation during learning activities conducted with the Discovery Learning model. A case study approach was employed, with qualitative data collected through classroom observations and informal interviews. The findings indicate that students actively engaged throughout the learning process, from assembling the kit to conducting group experiments. They were able to directly observe heat transfer phenomena through conduction, convection, and radiation. This hands-on experience enhanced their conceptual understanding, as reflected in their ability to confidently explain experimental results during class discussions. The study concludes that the Simple Heat Transfer Kit can serve as an effective alternative medium for teachers to implement science skill–based learning, thereby improving both student participation and conceptual comprehension, particularly on the topic of heat transfer.

Abstract

Renewable Energy based Hands-on experimental kits are essential for enhancing student engagement and conceptual understanding in physics education. This study evaluates the feasibility of a Solar-Powered Direct Current (SP-DC) experimental kit, focusing on its effectiveness, relevance, and endurance as perceived by users. A quantitative design was employed using a closed-ended questionnaire comprising 14 items. Participants (n=79) consisted of undergraduate students from Universitas Kristen Indonesia (n=36) and high school students from SMA N 11 Jakarta (n=43). Prior to completing the questionnaire, students engaged in assembling the SP-DC kit and measuring current and voltage. Data were collected between June 2022 and June 2023 and analyzed using the Rasch model through Winstep version 5.9.00. Fit validity was determined by item and person statistics (MNSQ, ZSTD, PTMEA), while descriptive analysis included item measures and score distributions. Findings confirmed that all questionnaire items met Rasch model validity criteria, with PTMEA correlations above 0.7. In terms of effectiveness, participants reported favorable perceptions of ease of use and assembly, though aspects such as portability and storage required improvement. Relevance was demonstrated through the kit’s role in supporting understanding of series and parallel circuits, motivating interest in renewable energy, and strengthening connections between theory and practice. Endurance analysis revealed that the kit was generally durable and safe, though operational robustness could be enhanced. The SP-DC experimental kit is a feasible educational tool that supports effectiveness, curricular relevance, and endurance. These results suggest the kit’s potential for broader application in both secondary and higher education.
