Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy can lead to complications during gestation, childbirth, and postpartum. The government recommends administering at least 90 Fe tablets to pregnant women to address this. Additionally, fulfilling nutritional needs is another strategy to combat anemia, with Moringa leaves emerging as a nutrient-rich food source known to elevate hemoglobin levels. This study investigated the impact of Moringa leaves and combined Fe tablet consumption on hemoglobin levels in anemic pregnant women. A quasi-experimental design incorporated pre-test and post-test evaluations with a control group in Bengkulu from June to November 2022. Purposive sampling yielded a cohort of 60 anemic pregnant women, divided equally into intervention and control groups. Data collected over two months were analyzed through univariate and bivariate methods using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests at a 5% significance level. Findings indicated that the combination of Moringa leaves and Fe tablet significantly increased hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with anemia (p<0.05). Therefore, anemic pregnant women are encouraged to consume Moringa leaves as a potential measure to enhance their hemoglobin levels.

Abstract

Abstract

A perineal laceration is a wound of the skin and muscular area between the vaginal and anal introitus caused by a labor tear. Perineal lacerations might occur in sudden and rapid removal of the fetus' head, excessive fetus size, and the inability of the pelvic muscles and soft tissues to accommodate the fetus's birth. One of the empirical non-pharmacology approaches to this study sought to understand the effect of binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis) leaf decoction on peritoneal wound healing in postpartum women. This is a quasi-experimental post-test-only control group study on 30 postpartum women treated in 15 private midwife practices in Bengkulu city from 10 November to 10 December 2022 who met the inclusion criteria. Subjects were sampled using the accidental sampling technique and were randomly divided into two groups. Wound healing was assessed using the REEDA scale, and the results were analyzed statistically using the Mann-Whitney or Wilcoxon test and the chi-square test. The study's results showed that Hb, age, and the number of children's influenced perineal wound healing. The average number of days for wound healing in the treatment group was six days. For a control group that used povidone-iodine 10% was eight days. It is concluded that there is an effect of decoction of the leaves of binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis) on the healing of peritoneal wounds in postpartum women.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major nutritional problem in Indonesia, including in North Bengkulu Regency, and can be prevented through exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life. Kahyapu Village, Enggano District, as an outer island area with limited access to health services, requires promotive and preventive interventions to support optimal breastfeeding practices. This community service program aimed to improve mothers’ and health cadres’ knowledge and skills regarding local food ingredients that may support breast milk production (galactagogues) and appropriate breastfeeding techniques. The program involved 16 participants consisting of 4 health cadres, 2 pregnant women, and 10 breastfeeding mothers. The implementation methods included needs assessment, nutrition education, demonstration of breastfeeding techniques, and cadre mentoring using a participatory approach. Evaluation was conducted through pre-test and post-test questionnaires as well as direct observation of breastfeeding practices. Results showed an increase in average knowledge from 75% to 93.8% after the intervention. Breastfeeding skills, especially positioning and latching, improved significantly. Health cadres also reported increased capacity to provide assistance for breastfeeding mothers, thereby strengthening program sustainability. In conclusion, this program effectively enhanced mothers’ and cadres’ capacity in optimizing breast milk production and correct breastfeeding practices, which has the potential to accelerate stunting reduction efforts in island communities.
