Abstract

The discrimination of Indonesian palm oil imposed by the European Union through the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) policy provides mixed and overlapping speculation. This is evident by the E.U.'s unpublished interest in the issue of discrimination against Indonesian palm oil. The purpose of this study is to find out the hidden interests or objectives of the European Union after imposing trade barriers on Indonesian palm oil exports, which will be reviewed through the theory of neo-mercantilism and also the concept of national interest. This research uses qualitative methods in collecting data related to problems using a descriptive approach to ensure a consistent understanding of the ideas considered. Our analysis shows unprecedented public interest in the European Union regarding discrimination against Indonesian palm oil. This is an effort to protect the European Union from their domestic vegetable oils being less competitive than vegetable oils from Indonesian palm oil. The European Union imposed trade barriers to prevent Indonesian palm oil from quickly entering the European market. Keywords: palm oil discrimination, European Union, RED II

Abstract

The exploitation of natural sources in Indonesian waters by foreign-flagged vessels and lacking attention to fishermen communities were two main problems that had to be solved by Susi Pudjiastuti during her service as the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia. Various policies, such as sinking vessels and distributing the subsidy to the public need, had already been undertaken. However, these types of policies will be potentially revised along with the regime change. The Integrated Center of Marine and Fisheries or Sentra Kelautan dan Perikanan Terpadu (SKPT) built in several outer islands of Indonesia became an alternative solution for maximizing the supervision and development of the national fishery. On the other hand, this project needs a large amount of budget. Therefore, Susi Pudjiastuti selected foreign aid as an alternative option in realizing the idea, which became the research main topic. Through Rational Choice Theory by Stephen Waltz, this research explains that foreign aid for SKPT had been resulted from Susi's decisions as a rational actor. Several potential actors had been chosen as lobbying targets. Based on various considerations and complexity in Susi's interactions with these actors, Japan was finally considered the most prospective entity. Various approaches later were conducted by MMAF to Japan. As a result, Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had agreed to assign a grant program to SKPT, and It had been recorded as the foreign aid with the greatest value along the the history of Japan’s aid to Indonesia.

Abstract

This research focuses on using the concept of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) as an analytical lens to identify the economic diplomacy strategy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The research method applied is a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques involving various sources, including reports, journals, news, and literature related to this topic. Cultural Intelligence is applied through four main dimensions: Motivational CQ, Cognitive CQ, Metacognitive CQ, and Behavioral CQ. This research explores how the UAE, as a multicultural country, utilizes cultural intelligence to shape and implement strategies in its economic diplomacy. The results show that Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is able to act as a lens that enables the identification of a country's economic diplomacy strategy. The high Motivational CQ is reflected in the UAE's enthusiasm to adapt to a dynamic economic environment. Cognitive CQ is applied in managing a positive image and reducing negative stereotypes, increasing attractiveness for expatriates and international economic actors. Meanwhile, Metacognitive CQ is reflected in the UAE's efforts to position themselves as a moderate and tolerant country, creating strong relationships in the Islamic world while still maintaining their cultural identity. Behavioral CQ strategies are manifested in inclusive and responsive policies to cultural conflicts, which strengthen economic relations and reduce uncertainty. This research contributes to the understanding of the role of Cultural Intelligence as an analytical lens in exploring a country's economic diplomacy strategy, particularly in the UAE context. The implications of this research can serve as a basis for the development of better policies and practices in enhancing economic cooperation and achieving national and global goals.

Abstract

This research will discuss the impact of the US-China rivalry on the actualization of Saudi Vision 2030. The objective is to examine the impact of Saudi Arabia's strategic alliances with the United States and China on its ambitious reform plan. The research investigates the geopolitical and international relations dimensions of the roles played by the United States and China. The focus is on the United States as a strategic ally and economic partner and China as a significant collaborator for economic diversification. The study employed a descriptive methodology, focusing on secondary data from relevant literature on Saudi foreign policy and Saudi Vision 2030. The findings indicated that the contrasting impacts of the United States and China in Saudi Arabia pose significant challenges to the clarity and consistency of Saudi strategic decision-making. Saudi Arabia is confronted with a complex geopolitical dilemma, as strengthening its ties with one state may have a detrimental impact on its relations with the other and compromise the achievement of Vision 2030. The research argues that successfully navigating the complex international landscape requires the adoption of a well-balanced foreign policy plan. This approach should aim to optimize the benefits obtained from partnerships while also limiting the possible risks associated with them.

Abstract

This study aims to explain CNN's media framing and Instagram's shadow-banning censorship policy related to Israel's aggression against Palestine since October 2023 as an action that contains a constitutive construction of interests. Through CNN's media coverage, the situation between Palestine and Israel is not described as an aggression, occupation, or genocide but as a conflict that occurred due to Hamas's attack on Israel. CNN even only uses diction that places Israel as the party being attacked and limits exposure to the loss of life in Palestine caused by Israel's aggression. The international community sympathises and provides their views regarding the developing situation but is hampered by Instagram's censorship policy through shadow banning. By using an interpretive approach to observe CNN's reporting and Instagram's shadow banning, the results of this study show that both contain US-Israeli constitutive interests in manipulating and controlling international perceptions. This refers to the interest in constructing intersubjective understandings related to Israel's positive image, which simultaneously eliminates Palestine's existence as a nation-state.Keywords: CNN; Instagram; Israel; Knowledge Constitutive Interests; Media Framing; Palestina; Shadow Banning
