Abstract

Prosedur kontrol infeksi yang umum dilakukan adalah dengan menerapkan standard precautions berdasarkan peraturan yang dikeluarkan oleh Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat pengetahuan mahasiswa kepaniteraan klinik tentang standard precautions operator sebelum dan setelah perawatan gigi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian survei deskriptif yang dilakukan dengan cara membagikan kuesioner pada mahasiswa kepaniteraan klinik yang terdiri atas 26 pertanyaan untuk sebelum dan 32 pertanyaan untuk setelah tindakan perawatan gigi. Data diolah secara manual dan dianalisis dengan analisis univariat. Hasil penelitian pengetahuan responden tentang standard precautions sebelum tindakan perawatan yang berpengetahuan kurang 69,8%, 29,3% cukup, 1% responden yang berpengetahuan baik. Setelah perawatan gigi didapat 54,5% responden memiliki pengetahuan cukup, 37,5% berpengetahuan baik, dan hanya 8% responden berpengetahuan kurang. Sebagai kesimpulan, pengetahuan mahasiswa kepaniteraan klinik tentang standard precautions operator sebelum dan setelah perawatan gigi masih kurang.

Abstract

Tooth extraction can cause open wound in the oral cavity, if not handled properly it can cause complications such as bleeding, infection and delayed wound healing. Wound healing is a biological process associated with tissue growth and regeneration. The wound healing process can be accelerated by administering chemicals that can affect the inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling phases. One of them is by giving snakehead fish extract. The extract contains albumin, copper and zinc which play an important role in the wound healing phase. The purpose of writing this review article is to explain the mechanism of snakehead fish extract in accelerating the healing of tooth extraction wounds. Several studies have revealed that snakehead fish extract affects pro-inflammatory cytokines in helping the wound healing process and significantly helps increase the number of fibroblast cells in tooth socket wounds, so that the healing process can take place more quickly. Based on this, it can be concluded that snakehead fish extract has the potential to accelerate the healing of tooth extraction wounds.

Abstract

Alveolar bone defects pose a significant challenge in dental and oral health, requiring the exploration of novel therapeutic approaches for effective bone healing. The binahong (Anredera cordifolia) leaves are known for their rich bioactive compounds with diverse therapeutic properties, while nanogels, a drug delivery system, offer advantages such as controlled release and enhanced bioavailability. This review explores the potential of binahong leaf extract nanogel as a promising candidate for alveolar bone healing by discussing its preparation, characterization, and properties. Furthermore, it delves into the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying alveolar bone healing. Based on our review, the effects of binahong leaves extract on bone cells and animal models indicate its therapeutic potential in alveolar bone healing by increasing the expression of growth factors and cells that are essential in bone healing. This review suggests that binahong leaves extract nanogel holds promise as a novel therapeutic intervention for alveolar bone healing. Further research and clinical studies are warranted to fully explore its potential.

Abstract

The palatal wound is challenging to cure due to eating and chewing activities; hence, a medication delivery system is required to expedite the healing process. The leaf of the binahong plant contains saponins, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Binahong leaves contain important antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. However, further discussion is necessary regarding the use of nanogels and binahong leaf extract in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Analyzing the effectiveness of nanogels binahong leaves in healing palatal mucosa wounds has been examined in previous research. Multiple studies have revealed that using nanogels and binahong leaf extract can accelerate wound healing on the skin and within the oral cavity by boosting fibroblasts, collagen, and other factors. In conclusion, the use of nanogel binahong leaf extracts has the ability to accelerate the healing of palatal mucosa wounds.

Abstract

One aspect that needs attention in dental and oral health is bacterial infection, including infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus is a type of gram-positive bacteria that can be found in various parts of the human body, including the skin and nasal mucus. These bacteria usually do not cause problems if they remain within normal limits. However, when Staphylococcus aureus enters the oral cavity or surrounding tissue, it can cause various dental and oral health conditions. Gambas fruit (Luffa acutangula (L.) Roxb.), which is also known as Oyong fruit from the Cucurbitaceae family, has an antibacterial effect. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of Gambas fruit (Luffa acutangula (l.) roxb.) on bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. This type of research is a laboratory experimental design post-test only control group. Research data were analyzed using testone-way ANOVA with post-hoc LSD. The results showed that there was an inhibition diameter at each concentration of Gambas fruit extract. 25% Gambas fruit extract has an average diameter of 10.8 mm, 12.5% Gambas fruit extract has an average diameter of 9.4 mm, 6.25% Gambas fruit extract has an average diameter of 8 mm, l Gambas fruit extract 3.125% has an average diameter of 6.9 mm. Gambas fruit extract has antibacterial properties with a minimum inhibition level of 25% against the bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

Background: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland, and rarely in the minor salivary glands. However, it has the potential to turn malignant. The minor salivary gland in the hard palate is a rare site for PA. Purpose: This report aims to describe the clinical and histopathology findings and treatment with surgical excision of long-standing PA on the hard palate. Case: 40-year-old woman with an asymptomatic 6 x 4 x 4 cm hard palate tumor mass that had remained untreated for ten years and had no preceding trauma. Case Management: The tumor mass was removed surgically by creating an excision opening of 2–3 mm between the mass margin and the maxillary bone periosteum, extending to the posterior palate. Histopathology findings confirmed the diagnosis of PA in the minor salivary gland and revealed typical characteristics associated with malignant transformation.  Observation after one month showed that the surgical wound had healed, and no symptoms of recurrence were visible. Conclusion: PA is a benign salivary gland tumor that has the potential to expand extensively. Appropriate surgical excision can improve the prognosis.

Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is a bacterium that plays an essential role in forming dental caries. Odontogenic infection is an oral cavity infection that can develop from dental caries if not appropriately treated. Caries treatment can be done with the use of antimicrobial agents. The increasing resistance to antimicrobial drugs has made herbal medicines the choice because they are more effective and less harmful. The community uses turmeric leaves as a cooking spice and treatment for stomach aches in children. Turmeric leaf extract contains flavonoids, tannin, and phenolic antimicrobial active compounds. This research aims to find out if turmeric leaf extract inhibits the growth of the Streptococcus mutans. This study uses a post-test-only control condition approach in a laboratory setting. The concentration of turmeric leaf extract tested was 10%, 15%, and 20% with the positive control (Chlorhexidine 0,2% mouthwash) and negative control (DMSO) with five repetitions. Antibacterial effectiveness test using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The data analysis using ANOVA showed a p-value of 0.00 on inhibition, which indicates that turmeric leaf extract can suppress the development of Streptococcus mutans. The average inhibition zone obtained was 8.7 mm at a concentration of 10%, at a concentration of 15% at 9.5 mm, and at a concentration of 20% at 8.54 mm. Abstract

Background: The oral cavity serves as the primary entry point for food and harbors various microorganisms, some of which can cause post-tooth extraction infections, such as dry sockets. One of the bacterial species responsible for this condition is S. viridans. Infection prevention is commonly achieved through the administration of antibiotics; however, excessive use of antibiotics can contribute to bacterial resistance. As a result, there is growing interest in exploring natural alternatives for infection control. One potential natural antibacterial agent is Andaliman fruit (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC.), which is traditionally recognized for its medicinal properties. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Andaliman fruit extract (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC.) against S. viridans in vitro. Methods: This study employed a laboratory experimental approach using Andaliman fruit extract at various concentrations (50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.125%). Chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2% was used as a positive control, while Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was a negative control. The antibacterial activity was assessed by applying these concentrations to paper discs and measuring the inhibition zones formed. Results: Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test showed a significant antibacterial effect of Andaliman fruit extract with a p-value of 0.000, indicating a concentration-dependent response in inhibiting S. viridans growth. Conclusion: Andaliman fruit extract exhibits antibacterial activity against S. viridans, with the most effective concentration being 50%. However, its inhibitory effect remains lower than that of the positive control (Chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2%), suggesting that further research is needed to enhance its antibacterial potency.

Abstract

Background: A dry socket is a severe pain one to three days after tooth extraction. Streptococcus sanguinis (S. sanguinis) is reported to inhibit the healing process of dry sockets. Curcuma longa L contains flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids which have the potential as antibacterials. Objective. This study evaluated the antibacterial properties of Curcuma longa L. on the S. sanguinis. Materials and Methods: This experimental study used a post-test-only control group design. Turmeric leaf extract is made by using the maceration extraction method. The method used in the inhibition test used Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion with five samples for each treatment. The sample consisted of five treatment groups: turmeric leaf extract with concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%, and positive control (clindamycin) and negative control (DMSO) groups. Data were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc tests. Results. The results of data analysis using ANOVA showed a p-value of 0.00 on inhibition, which means that turmeric leaf extract can inhibit the growth of S. sanguinis. The average inhibition zone obtained was 9.52 mm at a concentration of 10%, at a concentration of 15% at 9.84 mm, and at a concentration of 20% at 10.18 mm. Conclusion: Curcuma longa L extract inhibited the growth of S sanguinis on a moderate scale. Higher concentrations showed the best inhibition values.

Abstract

Background: Mobe (Artocarpus lakoocha) is recognized for its potential in accelerating wound healing, attributed to its secondary metabolites. However, its impact on hard tissue healing on post- extraction tooth sockets has been underexplored. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the effects of 3% Mobe leaf extract gel on the number of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, osteocytes and post-extraction sockets in Wistar rats. Methods: Thirty-two male Wistar rats had their left mandibular incisors extracted and were divided into eight groups. Mobe leaf extract gel was applied to Group I-IV and Aloclair® gel was applied to Group V-VIII for 14 days, twice a day. Residual socket volume (RSV) and fibroblast counts were measured on days 3, 7, and 14, while osteoblast and osteocyte counts were assessed on days 7, 14, and 28 post extraction. The RSV data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc least significant difference (LSD) test, while fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and osteocytes counts were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and post-hoc LSD tests. Results: RSV decreased significantly in both groups on day 14 (p=0.001 and p=0.002); however, the RSV was lower on the Mobe group. The fibroblast counts were higher in the Mobe group (p=0.001), and there was a significant difference in the mean number of osteoblasts and osteocytes in the Mobe group (p= 0.043 and p=0.008). Conclusion: The study concludes that 3% Mobe leaf gel extract is better than Aloclair® in accelerating socket healing mainly due to increased proliferation of fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and osteocytes.
