Abstract

Pronunciation is important for effective communication. However, many learners still struggle with pronunciation skills. In the 4.0 technology era, artificial intelligence (AI) technology can be used, such as the ELSA Speak application. While previous studies have highlighted the effectiveness of the technology itself, it pays less attention to students’ perceptions of the application’s use as an independent learning medium. This research aims to investigate students’ perception and acceptance of ELSA technology as an independent learning medium for improving pronunciation skills. This qualitative approach used a case study design. The researchers utilized semi-structured interviews for data collection, which focused on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Students stated that ELSA is useful in improving students’ pronunciation skills through effective learning. With its user-friendly application, ELSA supports the learning process effectively. Thus, students positively perceive the usefulness and user-friendliness of the ELSA to improve their pronunciation skills.

Abstract

The benefits of mindfulness in adults have been widely researched, and its positive impact on psychology and teacher performance has become a major focus in the field of education. These benefits include stress regulation and reduction, increased compassion, and improved teaching effectiveness. Many studies have highlighted the positive relationship between mindfulness traits and teaching readiness. This study specifically examines the role of prospective teachers' mindfulness traits in their readiness to teach. The theoretical model proposed by Manasia et al. (2019), which includes four key dimensions of teaching, was used to measure the teaching readiness of prospective teachers in three academic programs at the Department of Language Education at a leading state university in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) was employed to measure the mindfulness traits of students as future teachers. The study found that mindfulness traits were able to predict higher teaching readiness in participants. These findings also form the basis for a community service activity, which involves providing mindfulness psychology training during teaching preparation orientation for students as prospective teachers.

Speaking is a challenging skill for students to acquire in Indonesia. This study seeks to investigate the perspectives of vocational students regarding digital role-play as an opportunity for enhancing their speaking skills. This study employed a qualitative method, utilizing a case study as the research design. This study was carried out at SMKN 1 Singosari, Malang. Four participants were involved in the study, consisting of two students categorized as high-achieving and two categorized as low-achieving, majoring in welding engineering for the academic year 2024/2025. The research used semi-structured interviews to gather the data. The findings of this study indicate that digital role-play engages vocational students and enhances their excitement for learning to speak English. Through the use of digital role-play, vocational students believe they can enhance their vocabularies and immediately evaluate their problems, including mispronunciation. As a result, digital role-play serves as an advantageous technique that can be utilized, enabling vocational students to enhance their English speaking skills.

Abstract

Pronouncing English words correctly has become a familiar struggle experienced by Indonesian EFL students in the classroom. In addressing the issue, researchers employed an adapted procedure of shadowing technique. Here we substituted ready-made recording speech with Text-to-Speech AI generated voice as an inventive method. A case study approach was employed by involving semi-structured interviews, interviewing two welding engineer students as high achiever and mid achiever as the participant, both enrolled in Vocational High School 1 Singosari. The result indicates a pronunciation improvement to some extent, mainly awareness of phonemes, rising and falling pitch, and students were more fluent than before in a way of speaking confidence. Students find the idea straightforward, flexible, and adaptable where they were able to simply generate a voice made from desired script, furthermore they could mimic the generated voice easily, though students might find it difficult to catch the AI speaker in doing complete shadowing. Despite many positive results, the study did not go as planned due to time constraints and participants availability. This finding indicates the necessity for future research to be more meticulously designed and executed.

Abstract

Anxiety is a common obstacle for students in English speaking classes. Many EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students struggle with speaking anxiety which makes them have to switch languages from their L1 and known as code-switching (CS). While previous studies have highlighted the benefits of CS in English language learning, particularly in speaking, little attention has been given to specifically investigating its use by senior high school students to lower their speaking anxiety. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the types of CS employed by students in the classroom and to understand the student’s opinions about their experience on the influence of CS used by them to reduce their speaking anxiety. This exploratory study employed observation and interviews for data collections. This study found that students use three types of CS during speaking in English language classes, namely tag-switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching. Additionally, it is found that CS plays an important role in reducing students' speaking apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, and test anxiety. This research highlights the importance of CS in addressing speaking anxiety among EFL learners. Educators can use this understanding to tailor instructional approaches and provide better support for students in their language acquisition journey.
