Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to examine the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the second grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tapung Hilir. A correlational designed was used in this research. The sample was 80 students of second grade senior high school selected through using cluster random sampling. In addition, there were two data obtained as part of this research involved the ability of students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension test score. The test was used to assess students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. The results showed that the r-observed was 0.699 and the significant value at 0.05, which indicated that there was a correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. The R-squared value showed that there were 48.8% of range percentage between students’ vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. Consequently, it was indicated that the better students’ vocabulary mastery, the higher reading comprehension scores they might obtain.Key words: Correlation, Vocabulary Mastery, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to find out the students’ ability level in learning speaking of “SMK Taruna Pekanbaru”. The population of this research was the first year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru in the academic year of 2021/2022. The samples were the students of TBSM consists of 33 students who have been selected using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using speaking test. The speaking tests were analyzed using a speaking assessment by Brown (2004). As a result of the research, it was found that the first year students’ ability level in speaking using complimenting metrial were classified as poor level (53). The first year students’ ability were found in the aspect of the pronunciation (51,2), grammar (53,7), vocabulary (52), fluency (53), and comprehension (55). Thus, in other words, it can be concluded that students’ ability in speaking by the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru were classified into poor level (53).Key Words: Ability, Speaking, Complimenting.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the types and purposes of code-mixing used in “Ini Talkshow” You Tube videos. The research utilized a descriptive qualitative and documentation method. The source of the data in this study are from 5 “Ini Talkshow” You Tube videos entitled “Ayu Gani Valerie dan Veronika malah takut sama Om Yoo, Cie Andre malu ketauan niruin Chef Juna, Unseen Before Sule dan Nabila syok lihat pria tampan pakai sertifikat, Unseen Before Turis jauh taunya cuma modus, Unseen Before Woowww Michelle Joan klepek klepek sama gombalan Dede”which was published on 2021. The chosen videos provided with appropriate Indonesian-English code-mixing and usedto obtain the data by writing the transcript of the conversation, then a data sheet used as a secondary instrument. The data sheet takes the form of a table to record the classified information, which are displays two goals that became the study’s focus: the types and purposes of code-mixing.The result of the data analysis showed that a total of 55 instances of code-mixing within the utterances. In terms of types, 47 instances of Intra-Sentential code-mixing and 8 instances of Intra-Lexical code-mixing were found. Regarding the purposes of code-mixing, 23 utterances were categorized as fulfilling Lexical Needs, 11 utterances aimed at Being more Informative, 10 utterances were intended to assert Power, Status, and Pride, 7 utterances reflected a sense of Incompetence, 3 utterances were used for Making Jokes, and 1 utterance served the purpose of Expressing Emotion.The propensity for hosts and guest stars to engage in intra-sentential code-mixing, blending languages within words during their utterances, is notably driven by their preference for satisfying lexical requirements. The writer anticipates that these findings will yield considerable advantages by enhancing comprehension regarding code-mixing and shedding light on the reasons behind its widespread phenomenon in contemporary society.Key Word: Analysis, Code-Mixing, You Tube video, Ini Talkshow

Abstract

Abstract: This research discusses a case study of second language acquisition of an 8 year old child in Duri Riau. A qualitative approach was applied to this descriptive study. The data were gathered through a qualitative method by observing and recording. The researcher recorded, transcribed, analyzed, and classified the gathered data to determine the types of sentences and factors influencing in acquiring the foreign language . The findings showed that the research participant was able to produce some types of sentences, namely declarative sentences, interrogative sentences, imperative, and exclamatory sentences. The types of sentences were produced in conjunction with their communicative purposes. Besides, it was also revealed that the participant was able to produce sentences using various tenses: present tense and past tense both in positive and negative forms. In addition, the participant sometimes did code mixing between English to Indonesian and Indonesian to English when talking with people who used Indonesian. To find out the factors affecting the acquisition of the foreign language, the researcher analyzed the data using the theory of Lightbown and Spada (2006) which is relevant to this study. From the behaviorist side, it was revealed that cartoon movies, YouTube, books, and English kids’ songs were the factors that affected the participant in acquiring L2 . Moreover, the role of the caregiver influenced the development of the participant’s foreign second language acquisition. However, the role of the caregiver in this study was only as a facilitator that was to help the participant acquire the foreign language, and the person who played the role of the caregiver was the mother of the research participant.Key Words: Language acquisition, Second language acquisition, Children eight years old

Abstract

This research was aimed at analysing students’ strategies in giving compliments. This was descriptive qualitative research using a qualitative approach accompanied by descriptive statistics. This research involved 39 EFL students as the participants in the academic year 2019/2020 selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a DCT (Discourse Completion Test) containing a number of situations where the students were expected to give their compliment. The result showed that the students used many kinds of strategy in giving compliments. Explicit strategy was the most used by the students. Furthermore, the single explicit strategy appeared the most within overall strategies that appeared in the DCT. This implied that the students prefer to give a direct and simple compliment. One strategy in giving compliment appeared out of the classification which is congratulation attached to unbound semantic formula.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to examine the students’ perceptions of the strategies in theProcess Approach. The subjects were 30 English Department students of Riau University taughtusing Process Approach. A set of questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used to collectthe data. The level of perceptions was differentiated into three: Highly Positive, Positive andNegative. The results showed that all students had Positive and Highly Positive level of perceptionand no students had Negative perception of the strategies in the Process Approach. From the resultsof the interview, five categories were found. All of them reported positive opinions on the ProcessApproach and considered the editing and revising strategies as most useful. Besides, they statedthat the steps in Process Approach were more systematic, specific, comfortable, more meaningfuland livelier than other approaches. They all perceived that their writing performance had improvedafter the Process Approach intervention. The area of improvements were in collecting ideas,editing strategy, choice of words and the way how to write an essay. They also suggested on theapplication of the Process Approach for other writing classes. The findings from the interviewswere in line with the findings from the questionnaire which revealed that students had favorableperceptions of the Process Approach. In light of these findings, it can be suggested that the ProcessApproach has the potential to be used as alternative instructional tools to improve students’ writingperformance.
