Abstract

Fish production in Indonesia is increasing, but the main obstacle that can hinder the continuity of the cultivation process is disease attacks. Antibiotics are ingredients commonly used to treat fish diseases. However, antibiotics can have negative effects, so other alternatives are needed to overcome this problem. The use of prebiotics in Indonesia still comes from abroad, whereas Indonesia has many ingredients that can be developed into prebiotics. This research aims to identify and select local prebiotic sources that have the potential to meet scientific criteria as probiotics. The research method was carried out in vitro to determine the glucose, maltose, and fructose content in purple sweet potato, banana stem, cream sweet potato, yam tuber and yellow sweet potato. The highest maltose content is produced by purple sweet potatoes (2.61%), fructose content is produced by yellow sweet potatoes (1.80%), and glucose content is produced by creamy sweet potatoes (2.15%). The results of this study need to be further developed into probiotics that can be used to support sustainable aquaculture.

Abstract

Graphical Abstract  Highlight Research Paraprobiotic for intestinal health of shrimp. Growth performance and immune system increase during administration of paraprobiotics. Microencapsulation for making paraprobiotics. Pathogen inhibition by paraprobiotics.   Abstract Vibriosis, caused by Vibrio spp., is a major threat in shrimp aquaculture, leading to high mortality and economic losses. Probiotics and prebiotics are promising preventive strategies to enhance host immunity and feed efficiency. This study aimed to determine the optimal dose of para-probiotic Pseudoalteromonas piscicida (1Ub) microcapsules and their combination with the prebiotic mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) to improve growth performance and immune responses of Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). The experiment was conducted at the College of Vocational Studies, IPB University, using mysis 2 (M2) larvae reared in 60 × 30 × 35 cm³ aquarium for two weeks until post-larvae stage 10 (PL10). Shrimp were fed synbiotic microcapsules (1% para-probiotic and 12 mg/L MOS) via bioencapsulated Artemia sp. Five groups were tested: K− (control, PBS immersion), K+ (challenged with Vibrio harveyi), A (0.5% synbiotic), B (1.0%), and C (2.0%). After 14 days, groups K+, A, B, and C were challenged with 10⁶ CFU/mL V. harveyi for seven days. Although differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05), group A consistently showed better outcomes, including higher survival rate, final body length, total haemocyte count, respiratory burst, and phenoloxidase activity, along with lower Vibrio counts compared to K+. These trends indicate that synbiotic application, particularly at 0.5%, can enhance shrimp health and resilience. This study highlights synbiotics as a practical strategy to improve survival, growth, and disease resistance in larviculture.

Abstract

Gourami (Osphronemus gouramy) farming faces challenges, including slow growth rates andhigh feed costs. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotics, papain enzymes, andtheir combination on the growth performance and feed utilization of gourami. The study wasconducted using a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replicateseach. The treatments consisted of a control group (feed without papain enzyme or probiotics),treatment A (feed supplemented with 8 mL/kg probiotics), treatment B (feed supplementedwith 32.5 g/kg papain enzyme), and treatment C (feed supplemented with a combination of0.25 g/kg papain enzyme and 15 mL/kg probiotics). Juvenile gourami with average weight of5.82±0.09 g/fish were kept in nine fiberglass tank (3 m diameter and 1.2 m height) for 42 dayswith a stocking density of 15 fish/m2. After 42 days of rearing, treatment C exhibitedsignificantly higher specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio, and protein retention than theother treatments (P<0.05), with values of 3.03±0.15%/day, 2.78±0.20%, and 44.71±3.06%,respectively. The lowest feed conversion ratio was also observed in treatment C, with a valueof 0.94±0.06 (P<0.05). In conclusion, supplementation with 0.25 g/kg papain enzyme and 15mL/kg probiotics in the feed enhanced growth performance and feed utilization in gourami.
