Abstract

This study was undertaken in response to the deficient cognitive abilities of students. The problem in this study is whether there is an influence of the project-based learning (PjBL) model, which is assisted by blended learning, on improving students' critical thinking skills in class VIII of SMP Negeri 04 Paleleh Barat. This study aims to determine whether the project-based learning (PjBL) model is assisted by blended learning in students' critical thinking skills in class VIII of SMP Negeri 04 Paleleh Barat. This study was performed in SMP Negeri 04 Paleleh Barat between April to May 2024, employing a quasi-experimental methodology. The sample in this study consisted of class VIII-A as the experimental group and class VIII-B as the control group. Both classes will undergo a learning outcome assessment comprising a pretest and a posttest. The data analysis revealed that the project-based learning (PjBL) paradigm, augmented by blended learning, significantly influenced students' critical thinking skills on the human excretory system in class VIII at SMP Negeri 04 Paleleh Barat. This is derived from the t-test results obtained using IBM SPSS for Windows version 2.2, with a significance value. If the p-value (2-tailed) is less than the significance level (alpha) of 0.05, specifically 0.002 < 0.05, then the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of applying the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model on students' high-level thinking skills on ecosystem materials at SMA Negeri 1 Tondano. This study uses an experimental method with a quasi-experimental design involving two groups of students: the experimental class (X.2) taught using the PBL model, and the control class (X.4) taught using conventional learning methods. The number of students in each class is 30 people. Data is collected through pretest and posttest to measure students' high-level thinking abilities. The analysis showed that the experimental class's average posttest score was 83.67, while the control class was 79.50. The independent t-test showed that the t-count value (2.073) was greater than the t-table (1.671) with a significance value of 0.043, which was smaller than 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. Based on these results, it can be concluded that applying the PBL model has a positive and significant effect on improving students' high-level thinking skills. These findings are consistent with previous research showing that the PBL model effectively improves students' critical and analytical thinking skills. Therefore, applying PBL can be an effective alternative to improve the quality of learning, especially in developing students' high-level thinking skills.

Abstract

One of the essential skills needed by prospective elementary education teachers is scientific communication. The issue raised is the low level of communication skills among students in the context of relevant biological issues, which can hinder their engagement in biology science discussions and evidence-based decision-making. This study aims to analyze the scientific communication skills of prospective science teachers in biological science concepts. The research adopts a descriptive approach in its methodology. The research process was conducted through direct observation of learning activities taking place in the classroom. The population in this study consists of students from the elementary teacher education program at a public university in Ambon City, with a sample size of 80 students. The results indicate that the implementation of the Two Stay, Two Stray (TSTS) approach significantly improves students' communication skills. The average communication skills score increased by 71.41%, falling into the good category. These findings suggest that this collaborative approach is effective in enhancing students' understanding of biological issues and their ability to communicate effectively. This study recommends the implementation of active learning methods such as TSTS in science education to facilitate the development of scientific literacy and students' communication skills.
