Abstract

The Darul Huffaz Islamic Boarding School has a problem with piles of rubbish, where up to now the rubbish has only been collected, transported, and thrown to the Pesawaran TPA. Eco-Islamic boarding school-based education is an activity to make Islamic boarding schools environmentally friendly through real action. The aim of this community service (PKM) is to carry out eco-Islamic boarding school-based environmental empowerment at the Darul Huffaz Islamic Boarding School. The PKM partner is the Darul Huufaz Islamic Boarding School with a target of 32 female student volunteers, teachers, and employees. The activities were carried out for five months, from July to November 2023. Environmental empowerment activities carried out were the creation of waste banks in Islamic boarding schools, the use of organic waste into compost, and inorganic waste into eco-bricks. This community service activity is carried out in stages, namely the situational analysis of partner conditions, socialization, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and expansion. Mentoring and training activities resulted in an increase in the knowledge of residents at the Darul Huffaz Islamic Boarding School by 10%, the formation of waste bank peer educators, and a waste management program under the guidance of the Darul Huffaz Islamic Boarding School OSIS through compost and eco-bricks making activities. It is hoped that this PKM activity can become a learning method for developing eco-Islamic boarding school-based education at the Darul Huffaz Islamic Boarding Schools.

Abstract

Abstract

Rapid industrial development has contributed to an increase in the volume of waste produced, including organic solid waste. One of a pineapple plantation and agro-industrial company in Lampung Province has implemented a zero waste program to address the problem of organic solid waste arising from the pineapple production process. This fieldwork aims to examine the process of converting organic solid waste into compost through a zero waste approach, as well as to identify the technical and operational obstacles encountered in its implementation. Waste processing uses aerobic composting and vermicomposting methods. The processing results in three types of compost, namely bulky, premium, and pellet, which are reused as fertilizer on plantation land. The zero waste program that is implemented not only contributes to environmental preservation but also provides economic added value for the company.

Abstract

Abstract

The automotive industry faces an increasing demand for sustainable material selection as mechatronic components become more widespread in electrified vehicles. However, data-driven material selection approaches that simultaneously integrate environmental, economic, and technical criteria without laboratory experiments remain underdeveloped. This study addresses this gap by developing a computational framework that combines Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach, specifically the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method, using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)–based weights. The framework enables a transparent and reproducible evaluation of environmentally friendly materials for automotive mechatronic components. A case study on an actuator housing evaluates seven material alternatives: Al 6061 (die-cast), recycled Al (die-cast), Mg AZ91 (die-cast), PA6-GF30 (injection), PBT-GF30 (injection), PA12 (SLS 3D print), and bio-based PBT-GF30 (injection). The criteria include total global warming potential (GWP), cumulative energy demand (CED), water use, recyclability, cost, mass, stiffness index, thermal conductivity, and supply risk. Results show that recycled aluminum achieves the highest ranking (closeness coefficient = 0.939), followed by Al 6061 (0.727) and Mg AZ91 (0.547). A Monte Carlo analysis with 1,000 iterations confirms that recycled aluminum consistently remains the best option with 100% robustness under varying weighting conditions. The proposed workflow is replication-ready and can be directly integrated with established LCA databases such as GREET, Ecoinvent, or EPD, enabling engineers to perform sustainable and quantitative material decisions using only data and computational analysis.

Abstract

Internationally and nationally, natural rubber (Hevea sp.) is one of the important agricultural commodities. PT. XYZ is a natural rubber processing industry that produces SIR 20 (Standard Indonesia Rubber) with a processing capacity of up to 40 tons of KK per day. In its production activities, this company produces liquid waste as a byproduct that has the potential to damage the environment. This study aims to examine the liquid waste processing process at PT. XYZ and assess the content of the waste, so that it can be disposed of safely without having a negative impact on the environment, in accordance with applicable regulations. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe the liquid waste processing system and process and a quantitative descriptive method to compare the results of wastewater quality tests with quality standards. The results of observations of rubber liquid waste processing in this company use a pond system consisting of 10 ponds, namely 2 rubber trap ponds, 3 anaerobic ponds, 2 facultative ponds, and 3 aerobic ponds. Liquid waste produced from the rubber production process is flowed from one pond to another by utilizing gravity. Wastewater quality testing conducted by internal and external parties indicates that the pH, BOD, COD, TSS, Ammonia, and Total Nitrogen parameters meet the quality standards as stipulated in Appendix IV of Ministerial Regulation No. 5 of 2014 concerning Wastewater Quality Standards for Rubber Industry Activities. Therefore, the wastewater is declared safe for discharge into the environment.
