Abstract

Wonder (2012) written by R. J. Palacio. The novel tells the story of a ten-year-old, boy, August Pullman, who has a facial anomaly called Treacher Collins Syndrome (TSC) that makes him look differently. This condition leads him to be underestimated, obstracized, humiliated, and bullied. One of the life lessons that can be learned from Wonder is the insight into what a support system is, the support that given, because the researcher believes that the existence of this support system can reduce the negative impact of anxiety and stress when someone is in difficult situation and wants to be understood. This research aims to find out how far are the role of Auggie’s support system and the the impat of support system. This research uses qualitative method. The data analysis in this research uses psychology approach with social support theory by Cohen and wills. In this research, 4 roles of support system were found, which came from familiy as the biggest support system for August Pullman, the teachers at Breecher Prep School, Auggie’s friends and relatives. The role of support system for August Pullman, in Wonder, about a positive and mutually supportive social environment, is curcial in building psychological well-being.

Abstract

This research focused on The Effectiveness of Extensive Reading in Enhancing Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability on narrative text at SMP N 8 Satap Tondano. The research sample consisted of 19 students in class VIII. This study utilized a pre-experimental design consisting of a one-group pre-test and post-test design. A 20-item true/false question test was the instrument used in this study. To determine if there were any significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores, the data were examined using a t-test and gain score. The pretest and posttest scores differed significantly, according to the data. The mean score of students’ pre-test was 54.73 and the post-test was 87.36. The ratio on the t-table was less than the value of the t-test (12,271>1,734). As a result, (H0) was turned down, and (H1) was accepted. This demonstrated that extensive reading helped students improve their reading comprehension at SMP N 8 Satap Tondano. Students also say that the extensive reading made it easier for them to focus and understood the text better. In conclusion, this study suggests that schools can use extensive reading as an alternative learning method for teaching reading, particularly reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research has the purpose of investigating Antisocial Personality Disorder on the main character of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Rising which is Hannibal. This research was done qualitatively, indicating the data is not in the form of numbers but rather in the form of words. The data comes from the novel “Hannibal Rising” by Thomas Harris which was written in 2006. In conducting the research, psychodiagnostic analysis was used in order to find out the Antisocial Personality Disorder that Hannibal suffers from. The result of the research showed in characteristics of Antisocial Personality Disorder, that there were 2 signs of being a swindler, 3 signs of manipulating, 11 signs of being aggressive and irritate others, no sign of impulsiveness and 4 signs of lacking of empathy. Furthermore, the result also showed that in the classification of Antisocial Personality Disorder, there were no sign of antisocial jealousy, 2 signs of reputation-defending antisocial, 1 sign of risk-taking antisocial and 4 signs of nomadic antisoocial It can be concluded that Hannibal can be said as a person whom suffer from Antisocial Personality Disorder as his action throughout the novel can be said to indicate the characteristics and classification of Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal Self-Sacrifice as Seen in Kloves's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In conducting the study, the writer delimited this study only in revealing self-sacrifice using descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data the writer used psychological approach based on the theory of Carl Jung. Jung said that we must deal with three powerful archetypes that compose the self there are the Shadow, the Anima, and the Persona. The data taken from the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone movie script by Steve Kloves based on the novel by J.K. Rowling. After analyze the movie script the writer may concluded that the characters in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone indeed their self-sacrifice through their Sincerity of Love which is anima; Willingness to make Commitment and Willingness to tell Lies which are shadow; and Willingness to take a Risk which is persona as the components of self-sacrifice. These four types of self-sacrifice clearly describe in the movie. Through these findings, how sincere and valuable are self-sacrifice that felt by the main character Harry Potter and experienced by his family and friends seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Movie.

Abstract

Ada 2 jenis keterampilan berbahasa yang harus dikuasai oleh pelajar yaitu ketrampilan pasif dan produktif. Keterampilan produktif adalah berbicara dan menulis. Dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, kecapan berbicara dan menulis sangat sukar dikuasai oleh pelajar. Hal ini juga dialami oleh pelajar di Pengembangan Pendidikan Anak Ikhtus Wilayah Manado Barat Daya. Untuk mengatasinya, diberikan pelatihan menulis esai dalam bentuk paragraf yaitu paragraph deskriptif dengan menerapkan graphic organizers (GO). Pelaksanaan kegiatan tersebut dilakukan beberapa tahap selama 6 bulan. Kegiatan ini memberikan penjelasan tentang menulis paragraph dan strukturnya, paragraphs deskriptif dan strukturnya serta bagaimana struktur paragraph deskriptif diterapkan pada alat pembelajaran grafis yang visual atau graphic organizers. Peran alat belajar tersebut sebagai brainstorming untuk mempermudah pelajar mengingat elemen-elemen pada paragraph descriptive. Paragraph deskriptif yang diajarkan adalah menggambarkan orang. Hasil menunjukkan graphic organizers yang disesuaikan dengan ciri-ciri paragraph deskriptif membantu siswa untuk menulis esai sesuai elemen penyusunnya.

Abstract

The research is aimed at revealing courage from Charles Darnay in A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. the story of this novel is describing of France in the griped of masses, In doing research the objective approach is taken because it focuses only on the object material that is A Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Darnay. The data analyzed are presented in descriptive form, are clarified as qualitative research because data is in form of words. Since this study is objected to explore courage, revolution, love and sacrifice of this study. The result show that the courage of Charles Darnay in resisting his fear to help his relatives and family in the revolution. Dickens described the injustice that led to Charles Darnay having to deal with law and justice, He also made revolution, poverty, oppression, misery, hanging, and guillotine became common before the revolution, and France was free from the grip of aristocracy.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to see whether the use of a wordlist can improve students’ vocabulary memorization or not. This research was conducted at the eleventh grade of SMA NEGERI 2 Tondano, class XI was chosen as the subject of the study and this class consists of twelve (12) students. This research used a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The instrument for data collection is an objective test. This research showed that the mean score of the pre-test is 68% for basic vocabulary numbering 30 and 20% for vocabulary in the book and the post-test is 85%. This means that the result of the post-test is higher than the pre-test. In other words, this result may lead to the conclusion that using the use of wordlist is effective in improving students’ vocabulary in the 12th grade of SMA Negeri 2 Tondano. This shows that English Teachers can use a wordlist to enrich and improve students’ vocabulary memorization

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether or not there is a correlation between smartphone use and students reading activities This research is conducted at English Education Department Faculty of Language and Arts Manado State University The method used in this research is qualitative method Data collection in this research is a questionnaire that is distributed to 27 students The result of this research shows data based on the variables smartphone use and reading activities The data from this research were displayed in percentage form The result of this research shows scores of each variable 87 96 for X variable and 74 23 for Y variable The researchers conclude that there is a correlation between these two variables because the difference in percentage scores between these two variables which is not too large which indicates that reading activities using smartphone is an activity that can attract students to read more Therefore both have a positive correlation because the two variables have increased in which respondents use smartphone for reading activities due to several considerations for example the simple form of a smartphone and easy to carry and use in a comfortable position depends to the wishes of the respondents and also the low price of a smartphone so the smartphone is not difficult to get < p>
