Abstract

This study aims to find out the type of language style that students use to communicate in the "Sisters Course". The research uses the quality descriptive method and theories of Martin Joos and Holmes' theory. The result of this study was that researchers found that all students used five types of language styles, namely frozen style, Formal style, Consultative style, Casual style, and Intimate style. Researcher also found factors that influence language style according to Holmes are social factors, age and gender, ethnicity, and social networks. The majority of students come from Java so they use Javanese as their daily language. Researchers suggest that students can apply language styles according to the type of language style as daily communication, while teachers are expected to be able to apply the appropriate type of language style in the expected context.

Abstract

This research analyzes news item on the Kompas.com site related to radicalism and intolerance in education by teacher religion evaluation, to analyze about the news is applied Appraisal Theory that focuses on negotiating social relations about one's assessment of something. This study used qualitative documentation as  research design. For data collection techniques used reading and searching for news techniques, selecting research data news according to the formulation of the problem and research objectives, then conducting a language analysis of news taken from Kompas.com using appraisal. Then the data are processed to be able to classify appraisal attitude according to the category. The result study shows the appraisal include projecting source, attitude, graduation, and heterogloss. Finally, the interpersonal meaning concern in graduation focus which imply force intensifier and focus sharpener.

Abstract

The development of the era and the development of literary science make novels not only fictional. The novel 49 Hari Kisah Penantang Gelombang by Nuril Basri is written based on the reality that occurs in the real world, so it can be called a biographical novel. Starting from human existence in facing a series of extreme problems that arise in real life, then reproduced by the author into a biographical novel. The purpose of this study is to describe the author’s struggling value in writing the novel 49 Hari Kisah Penantang Gelombang. To reveal these values, the theory on the aspect of struggle values will be utilized. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with Abrams' expressive criticism approach to the sociology of the author. The data collection technique used is documentation study. While the data analysis technique is qualitative data analysis. The results of the study show the values of struggle: persistence, patience, never giving up, and the responsibility of a novelist in conducting research to reproduce true stories into literary works in the biographical novel genre.
