Abstract

Cooperatives and farmer groups in Indonesia's dairy sector are facing several serious challenges that can threaten their sustainability. One of the main issues is the availability and quality of livestock feed. This literature study aims to analyze and summarize various aspects of the threats to the sustainability of cooperatives and farmer groups caused by feed-related problems in the context of dairy cattle in Indonesia. The research method employed in this study is literature review. This literature study investigates issues related to livestock feed, such as inadequate feed availability, feed prices, and the quality of feed that can affect the productivity and health of dairy cattle. The results of the literature study indicate that uncertainty in feed supply, rising feed prices, and the lack of access to high-quality feed for farmers are the primary threats to the continued operation of cooperatives and farmer groups. Therefore, cooperatives must have a strategy to anticipate threats related to feed issues in order to maintain the sustainability of the cooperative.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management and treatment of Albino Buffalo (Kerbau Bule Kyai Slamet) in the Kirab Malam 1 Suro tradition at the Surakarta Palace. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the treatment of the buffalo consists of three main stages: pre-procession (ritual bathing and parade rehearsal), during the procession (escorted by Abdi Dalem and designated officers), and post-procession. These treatments address not only symbolic and cultural aspects but also refer to animal welfare principles, such as freedom from stress, hunger, and discomfort. The management practices reflect an integration of local wisdom with sustainable livestock practices, making this tradition an example of ethical cultural preservation with a strong emphasis on animal welfare.

Abstract

Chicken meat is rich in protein and moisture, making it susceptible to rapid spoilage when exposed to harmful microorganisms. Therefore, it is essential to maintain high standards of hygiene and service during sales and slaughter processes. This study aims to explore the relationship between the characteristics of broiler chicken traders—such as age, education, business experience, sales volume, and income—and the level of service provided in selling chickens that meet hygienic standards. The research was conducted in September 2024 at Ciroyom Market, located in the Andir District of Bandung City, West Java. Respondents were chosen randomly, resulting in a sample size of 31 individuals. The Spearman Rank correlation test was employed to assess the relationship between the two variables. Findings indicate that most broiler chicken traders fall within the early adulthood age range (15–40 years), possess a medium level of education (junior high to senior high school), have significant business experience (over 10 years), and report a medium sales volume (2,708.40 – 18,736.76 kg/month) along with a medium income (Rp. 4,887,869.25 – Rp. 28,528,259.78/month). The service level of the majority of traders is categorized as medium (64.52%). The characteristics that demonstrate a significant correlation with the service level for selling hygienically slaughtered chickens are education, sales volume, and income, while age and experience do not show a significant correlation.

Abstract

Local knowledge is an integral part of cultural heritage that develops through the collective experiences of communities in interacting with their natural, social, and cultural environments. One form of this local knowledge is the maintenance of albino buffalo (Kerbau Bule), which are cared for by the abdi dalem (royal servants) of the Surakarta Palace. The local knowledge possessed by the abdi dalem in maintaining these buffalo reflects a spiritual, ecological, social, and human relationship within the context of Javanese culture. This study aims to examine the local knowledge system of abdi dalem in the care of albino buffalo, viewed through the lens of the five principles of livestock management (panca usaha ternak). The research method used is a case study with a qualitative approach, involving informants from both the abdi dalem and the local community around the buffalo enclosure. The results of this study show that the practice of buffalo maintenance is based on conventional livestock techniques, guided by cultural values passed down through generations. This knowledge encompasses five key aspects: breeding and reproduction, feeding, general animal husbandry practices, housing, and animal health. The maintenance of the Kerbau Bule in the enclosure located at Alun-alun Kidul also serves as a tourist attraction and provides positive economic impacts for the surrounding local community.

Abstract

Abstract

The livestock industry has great potential in Indonesia, especially the local chicken industry. West Java Province has a large local chicken population, driven by the increasing consumption of local chicken meat which is considered to have a unique flavour. Consumers tend to buy local chicken meat in traditional markets and consider product attributes to suit their preferences. This study aims to determine the attributes that are the main considerations of consumers, as well as their preferences and attitudes towards purchasing local chicken meat. A survey method with a quantitative approach was used in this study. The research was conducted at Caringin Market in Bandung City with the participation of 50 consumers who bought local chicken meat at that location. Data analysis used Chi Square analysis and Fishbein's Multiatribut analysis. The results show that there are differences in consumer preferences for the attributes of local chicken meat. Preferred local chicken meat has a fresh white ‘slightly’ yellowish colour, tender texture, fresh condition, meat free from feather buds, and has a fresh aroma typical of chicken meat. The attributes of local chicken meat from most considered to least considered are freshness, aroma, colour, cleanliness, and texture of the meat, respectively. Respondents' level of liking and attitude assessment showed “Like” and “Very Good”.
