Abstract

Coastal waste pollution remains a critical environmental issue that poses substantial risks to marine ecosystems and nearby communities. This study aims to identify the composition and volume of coastal waste found in the Dusit Beach area and to evaluate potential management strategies that support environmental sustainability and community empowerment. Using a field-based research approach, systematic waste collection was conducted on 18 May 2024, resulting in 27 sacks of waste that were subsequently sorted and analyzed. Plastic waste was identified as the most dominant category by volume, accounting for 48 percent of the total. The 13 sacks of plastic waste collected weighed 129.7 kg. These results indicate inadequate waste management practices and limited public awareness regarding proper waste disposal and segregation. Further analysis reveals that the significant amount of plastic waste presents opportunities to apply the 3R waste management concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Examples include eco-brick production, craft development, simple construction materials, and community-based waste bank initiatives to generate raw materials for recycling. Community involvement and empowerment in waste management are essential strategies to enhance public participation and generate additional economic value. Overall, the findings emphasize the need for an integrated and community-driven waste management system to reduce coastal pollution and promote sustainable development.

Abstract

This study presents the design and implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT)–based monitoring and control system using an ESP32 microcontroller. The system is developed to monitor environmental conditions through a DHT22 sensor for air temperature and humidity measurement, as well as a pH sensor to determine the acidity level of the medium. Sensor data are transmitted to a web-based application and displayed in real time in the form of numerical values and graphical representations to facilitate user observation. In addition to monitoring functions, the system incorporates relay-based control to operate a fan and an aerator in both manual and automatic modes. System testing was conducted to evaluate the performance of sensor data acquisition and the execution of control commands. The test results indicate that the system is able to reliably read sensor data and perform control operations as intended. This system is expected to serve as a learning platform for understanding basic IoT implementation and simple control systems in agricultural applications.

Abstract

This research examines the potential of pomegranate peel extract (Punica granatum) as an environmentally friendly green corrosion inhibitor to control the rate of corrosion in carbon steel pipes in the petroleum industry. Corrosion in carbon steel causes economic losses and safety hazards, while conventional synthetic inhibitors have a high cost and a bad impact on the environment. Pomegranate peel was chosen because it is an agro industrial waste rich in bioactive compounds such as tannins, flavonoids, polyphenols, and ellagic acid that are able to form a protective layer on the steel surface. The results showed that the administration of extracts with variations of 10 ml, 20 ml, and 30 ml was able to significantly reduce the corrosion rate, with a mass decrease of 23.98 g; 23.52 g; and 23.91 g respectively, much smaller than the inhibitor-free sample. Thus, the pomegranate peel extract shows promising potential as a natural corrosion inhibitor that may help reduce the corrosion rate of carbon steel while offering a more environmentally friendly alternative.

Abstract

Patient compliance with medication schedules remains a major challenge, especially for individuals with chronic diseases requiring long-term and routine treatment. Missed or delayed doses frequently occur due to forgetfulness or the absence of monitoring. This study presents the design of an IoT-based daily medication consumption monitoring system using an ESP32 microcontroller. The system integrates a limit switch to detect the opening of a medicine box as an indicator of medication intake, and is supported by an LED, buzzer, and 16×2 LCD for local reminders and status display. An Android application is included for configuring schedules and receiving real-time notifications. A key methodological difference from previous ESP32-based medication reminder studies is that earlier systems rely mainly on time-based alerts without verifying whether the user actually responds. In contrast, the proposed approach employs sensor-based event detection to confirm physical interaction with the medication box, enabling behavioral verification rather than simple reminder delivery. IoT provides an unprecedented approach in the field of instrumentation and measurement, namely enabling instruments to detect, characterize, and analyze physical phenomena continuously and in real time. This allows the system to log actual user compliance in real time via Firebase. System development involves hardware design, Arduino-based ESP32 programming, and HTTP data communication using JSON processing. Experimental results show that the system reliably detects user actions, triggers reminders, and uploads consumption data. The system has been proven to provide timely notifications via LEDs and buzzers with 100% accuracy. Overall, the system offers a more accurate and responsive method for supporting daily medication adherence.
