Abstract

The objective of this research was to develop the appropriate English speaking worksheet based on scientific approach for grade X of Senior High School students. This research belongs to Research and Development (R&D) study through seven phases; gathering information and data, analyzing the data, writing the course grid, writing the first draft, getting the experts’ judgement, revising the worksheet and writing the final draft. The subject of this research were 42 students of grade X Senior High School Teladan Medan. There were two questionnaires employed[1] in this research: (1) need analysis questionnaire which distributed to the students and (2) worksheet evaluation questionnaire which distributed to the worksheet experts to evaluate the speaking worksheet. The data obtained from the need analysis questionnaire were analyzed using frequency and percentage, while the data from evaluation questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistic. This research developed six units of speaking worksheet. The speaking worksheet for grade X students of Senior High School Teladan Medan consists of Observing, Questioning, Exploring, Associating and Communicating stages. Based on the experts’ judgement of the content, the language, the presentation and the graphic, the develop speaking worksheet is appropriate to be used for grade X students’ of Senior High School Teladan Medan. The mean score of all aspects was 4.68 and chategorized as “very good” since the range was in interval 4.5.<X ≤ 5. Keywords : Research and Development (R&D), Speaking Worksheet, Scientific Approach

Abstract

This study investigated teacher’s strategies in teaching reading comprehension of analyticalexposition text. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. Therespondents of this research were one English teacher and nineteen students of XI IPS 2 class inSMA Negeri 1 Bangun Purba. The instrument for collecting the data was a video recorder andquestionnaire dissemination. The teacher was observed and recorded when applied teachingstrategies in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. Meanwhile, the students had tofill the questionnaire to state their problems towards the teacher’s strategies in teaching readingcomprehension of analytical exposition text. The result indicated that the teacher implied generalmethods such as introducing text, setting the reading purpose, skimming the text, translating thetext, answering question and identifying answer. Meanwhile, the most difficult strategyaccording to the students was skimming text. There were 11 of 19 students who stated thatskimming text was difficult since they did not possess good vocabulary mastery. The leastdifficult strategy was identifying answer. Based on the data, teacher might need to improve thestrategies to overcome students’ problems in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text

Abstract

This study was a descriptive qualitative research. It aimed to describe the content validity of the English summative test items for the tenth grade students at SMK Imelda Medan. This study used documentary analysis in collecting the data. The data of this research were the English summative test items for the odd semester of the tenth grade students made by the English teacher at SMK Imelda Medan in academic year of 2018/2019. The English summative items were classified into five categorizations: interpersonal conversation, transactional conversation, short functional texts, genre, and grammar. Based on the analysis of data, 22 out of 30 English summative test items for the tenth grade students were suitable to the syllabus (73%) with the most dominant topic about transactional conversation (10 items while there were 10 out of 30 items were irrelevant (27%) to the syllabus because the items discuss about the topics that are not irrelevant to the syllabus. Keywords: Summative Test, Content Validity, and Syllabus

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the reading questions quality in an English worksheet for grade XI of Vocational High School based on Revised Bloom’s taxonomy. This study is conducted by descriptive method, with qualitative as well as quantitative area. The subject of this study is reading questions which are taken from English worksheet for grade XI published by Surya Grafika Mandiri. Since this study uses observation method, the instruments of collecting data is by using checklist. The result of the checklist was analyzed both as qualitative and quantitative data. These data are the reading questions in English worksheet based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The final result was the quality of reading questions categorized into each types of cognitive domain of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the types of collocation used in the English textbook for grade X students in senior high school, to find out the most dominant used of collocation, and to describe how the collocations applied in the 3 genre texts contained in the textbook. The data of this study were the collocations used in 3 genre texts, descriptive, recount, and narrative of an English textbook for tenth grade students in senior high school. After analysing the data, the researcher found 6 types of collocations used in the 3 genre text. The result showed that the textbook use 6 types of collocations (adjective + noun, verb + noun, noun + noun, verb + preposition, verb + adverb, adverb + adjective), and the most dominant collocation used was the adjective + noun type of collocation. The use of collocation in the narrative text was the biggest percentage of (38%), followed by the recount text of (35%) and the last was the descriptive text of (27%).Keywords: Collocation, Types of collocations, Genre Text, English Textbook.

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the English Teaching Methods in writing descriptive text and the problems faced by the teacher. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this research was an English teacher of SMK NEGERI 1 Pulau Rakyat. The techniques of collecting data were by observing the process of teaching writing comprehension of descriptive text at X Grade students and interviewing the English teacher. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. This study found that the teacher at SMK NEGERI 1 Pulau Rakyat used the method in teaching writing descriptive text. The English teacher used the lecture method and discussion method to teach in the descriptive text and the students get difficulties in comprehending the material. The application lecture method and discussion method is not appropriate with scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum. The result and response from the students to the teacher’s method are still not effective. The teacher should not apply the methods in written but also in spoken. And the problems faced by the teacher were the first is about the lack of students’ vocabularies, and the second is about the students’ participations when work in group. This study also found that the teacher’s methods not integrated with the scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum. The implementation of methods in teaching writing  should can make teaching learning process more interesting and help the students’ understanding and skill of writing comprehension better.Key words: Teaching Method, Writing, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

This study was about IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback) On Classroom Interaction For Computer Students in SMK 1 Yapim Medan. The aim of this study were to state clearly the objectives of the study in relation of the problems posed. The objective was to describe how the pattern of IRF in the classroom interaction for computer students. This research used qualitative research. The data were collected in three ways by observing by video recording, interviewing and questionnaire. The data was analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard theory (1975). The result of this study were the following (1) The language used by the teacher and the students in the classroom interaction was not balance. Both teacher and students used bahasa for 70% and the rest 30% for English. (2) There was the lowest pattern responded by student. It had 20% responses given to the students because the students made many mistakes in pronouncing some words when they read the text. The teacher feedback was the dominat pattern in the classroom interaction rather than initiation. It is suggested to English teacher especially for English teacher who is teaching computer students to improve students English by by having practice and supporting them to be brave to speak English. Keywords: IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback), Classroom Interaction, Computer Students

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the needs of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan in learning reading English using website and concerns on how web-based reading learning materials are developed for grade VIII students of junior high school.  The nature of this study is Research and Development (R & D). The steps were conducting the needs analysis, writing the course grid, storyboarding, writing the first draft, obtaining the experts’ judgments, revising the first draft, and finally writing the final draft. This study involved 32 students of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan as the research subjects. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaires (needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaires). The results of the needs analysis questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and the expert judgment were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data got from the result of need analysis was being the basis in developing the product. The website was divided into five pages: Home, Start Up, Your Focus, Your Activity, and Grammar Corner. Then, based on the expert judgment, the website are appropriate for the grade eight students of junior high school. It was proved by the mean value of 4.2 for web based materials which cover the appropriateness of content, language, and presentation, and 4.5 for the website.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Website, Reading Materials, Junior High School

Abstract

This study concerns on how reading text are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. It was started from collecting the data, analyzing data, designing course grid, designing new reading material by using Scientific Approach, validating by experts, and revising for final product. The new reading material contained of five stages namely; observing, questioning, exploring, associating, and communicating. The source of data of this study was the grade X students of Computer Engineering and Networking Program at SMKS Taman Siswa Medan consisting 24 students. Instrument of collecting data were observation, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing data, the researcher got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Computer Engineering and Networking program. The materials which were developed were focused on descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts. The average scores are 3,4 both from English teacher and English lecturer. Abstract

The objectives of the study were to find out the components of TPACK in teaching analytical exposition text and to reveal how the TPACK is implemented in teaching analytical exposition text for students. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method which investigated an English teacher and students at grade 11th as the subject of the research. The techniques of collecting the data were observation, video recording, and interview. The results of the study showed that the components of TPACK as proposed by Mishra and Koehler (2006) such as content knowledge (CK), pedagogical knowledge (PK), pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), technological knowledge (TK), technological content knowledge (TCK), technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK), and technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) were found in teaching analytical exposition text. It is also found that the implementation of TPACK as suggested by Harris and Hofer (2009), was conducted through five basic process, such as (1)determining the goals of the learning, (2) choosing the most appropriate methods as well as strategies that can be used to enhance students’ learning experience, (3) selecting and sequencing what kind of activities that students will engage in during the learning, (4) determining how students can be assessed based on the learning goals and their achievement, and (5) selecting what kind of tools and resources will be used to help students achieve the learning goals.
