Abstract

The use of chitosan from maggot (Hermetia illucens) exuvia as an edible coating for tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) and an edible film with honey added as an antibacterial agent was investigated. This study aimed to determine the yield of chitosan from black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) maggot exuviae as an edible coating. The chitosan was produced from chitin by deacetylation, and its effect on the weight loss and vitamin C levels of tomatoes for 7 days after treatment was investigated. The chitosan coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using a disk diffusion method. The result showed that by deacetylation, conversion of chitin produced chitosan with a yield of 72% and a deacetylation degree of 75.05%. The chitosan coating significantly affected the weight loss of tomatoes, with the best concentration being 2%. However, the treatment did not significantly affect the decrease in vitamin C levels. The edible chitosan film from BSF maggot exuviae with added honey had a thickness, water content, and water vapor transmission rate of 0.156 mm, 16.9913%, and 30.45 g/m2/24 hours, respectively. SEM characterization showed a relatively dense surface structure, which was slightly smooth and porous. Regarding antibacterial activity, the edible chitosan film inhibited Staphylococcus aureus with an inhibition zone of 10.37 mm; however, Escherichia coli was not inhibited. These results suggest that chitosan from BSF maggot exuviae has potential as an effective edible coating for reducing weight loss in tomatoes despite showing limited antibacterial properties.

Abstract

Smallanthus sonchifolius or known by the local name Insulin or Yacon is a traditional medicinal plant commonly used to treat diabetes. Apart from being a diabetic drug, insulin also has the potential to have antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-melanogenic activities. The aim of the study was to determine total flavonoid content (TFC) and DPPH radical scavenging of Insulin bark and stem wood extracts using UV-Vis spectrometry. The calculation results show that the total flavonoid content equivalents to quercetin in Insulin bark and stem wood extracts is 29.2 and 210.2 mg QE/g extract, respectively, while the DPPH radical scavenging test results are 80.01 and 58.85 ppm, respectively. Both the TFC and the antioxidant properties of the stem wood extract were higher than that of the Insulin bark extract. Selain sebagai obat diabetic, Insulin juga berpotensi memiliki aktivitas antioksidan, antikanker, dan anti-melanogenik. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk menentukan total flavonoid content (TFC) dan peredaman radikal DPPH dari ekstrak kulit dan kayu batang Insulin menggunakan spektrometri UV-Vis. Hasil perhitungan menunjukkan total flavonoid content yang setara dengan quarcetin pada ekstrak kulit dan kayu batang Insulin adalah 29,2 dan 210,2 mg QE /g ekstrak, secara berturut-turut, sedangkan hasil uji peredaman radikal DPPH adalah 80,01 dan 58,85 ppm, secara berturut-turut. Baik TFC maupun sifat antioksidan ekstrak kayu batang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan ekstrak kulit batang Insulin. Kata Kunci:         Smallanthus sonchifolius, insulin, TFC, obat tradisional

Abstract

The research about the utilization of modified gas-liquid separators in the determination of Hg ions by using the Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (CV-AAS) method has been done. To optimize the measurement results, several parameters that affect the hydride generator have been studied. Some specified essential parameters are the type and concentration of acid, the level of SnCl2 as a reducing agent, sample volume and the analytical performance such as linearity (r), detection limit (LOD) and quantitation limit (LOQ), repeatability (% RSD), and accuracy have been studied. The results of the research showed the gas-liquid separator modified can be used instead of commercial gas- liquid separators. It was showed by the repeatability value as % RSD < 2/3 CV Horwitz values, the LOD was 0.2530 μg/mL, and the LOQ was 0.8432 μg/mL. The accuracy of this method was good shown by a recovery percentage of 101.6%. Abstract

Hidrogel berbasis kitosan telah berkembang sebagai biomaterial berpotensi tinggi untuk aplikasi medis, khususnya dalam penyembuhan luka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mensintesis dan mengevaluasi hidrogel kitosan dari keong bakau (Telescopium telescopium) dengan crosslinker ganda glutaraldehida dan natrium tripolifosfat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimental laboratorium dengan desain quasi-experimental. Populasi terdiri dari lima kombinasi rasio GA:STPP (4:1, 3:2, 1:1, 2:3, dan 1:4), dengan sampel berjumlah lima hidrogel diuji secara duplo menggunakan purposive sampling. Instrumen penelitian mencakup stopwatch untuk pengukuran gelling time dan jangka sorong digital untuk diameter zona hambat. Teknik analisis data menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan analisis komparatif dengan kategorisasi berdasarkan kriteria Valgas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rasio GA:STPP 1:4 dan 2:3 menghasilkan zona hambat sedang (6-8 mm) terhadap Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli, sementara peningkatan STPP mempercepat waktu gelasi dari 330 menjadi 55 menit. Kesimpulannya, hidrogel kitosan dengan sistem dual crosslinking GA-STPP berpotensi sebagai material plester luka antibakteri dengan keseimbangan optimal antara sifat mekanik, daya serap, dan aktivitas antimikroba untuk aplikasi medis berkelanjutan
