Abstract

This community service activity discusses the introduction of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) as an alternative media for practicing pronunciation, especially in learning English. MALL is a learning approach that utilizes mobile technology, such as smartphones, as a tool in the language learning process. The purpose of implementing this community service activity is to introduce how the use of MALL which assist to practice English pronunciation. This activity was carried out in the form of a small workshop to introduce several MALL applications that can be used to practice pronunciation. The participants in this activity were the students of English Education Study Program. The results of this activity indicate that the participants enthusiastically participated in the activity. Participants also demonstrated good skills when practicing the MALL application during the activity. Participants also had positive experiences in using MALL as a language learning tool. The introduction of MALL as a learning method can provide an effective media in improving participants' pronunciation skills. With the advancement of mobile technology that continues to grow, MALL has great potential to become an integral part of language teaching, especially English, in the future.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan kepada guru–guru tentang penggunaan aplikasi Renderforest berbasis pembelajaran blended learning pada SMK Karya Setia Pegajahan Medan. Kegiatan ini bermula dari permasalahan yang dimiliki mitra terkait dengan minimnya pengetahuan guru-guru tentang penggunaan aplikasi pembelajaran berbasis media online. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah berupa pelatihan secara intens kepada guru–guru dimana didalam sesi pelatihan juga dilakukan penerapan hasil pelatihan. Guru-guru diminta membuat video pembelajaran dengan menggunakan aplikasi Renderforest. Hasil dari kegiatan ini sangat bermanfaat. Guru-guru sangat antusias sekali dalam menyerap dan menerapkan aplikasi Renderforest berbasis pembelajaran blended learning ini. Mereka mampu memberikan pembelajaran yang lebih bervariasi kepada siswa dan siswi mereka.

Abstract

Artikel ini ditulis sebagai hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang dalam hal ini dikhususkan bagi mahasiswa semester dua Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di salah satu universitas swasta di Medan. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan ragam informasi penggunaan aplikasi edit video berbasis AI yang dapat dimanfaatkan mahasiswa dalam penyelesaian tugas proyek video khususnya dalam Mata Kuliah Speaking in Professional Context. Selama kegiatan, mahasiswa ditunjukkan ragam aplikasi video dan cara penggunaannya serta video news anchor yang dihasilkan dari salah satu aplikasi video. Berbagai macam aplikasi video seperti InVideo, Powtoon, Kinemaster, FilmoraGo, InShot, CapCut dan sebagainya yang populer dan dapat dimanfaatkan oleh mahasiswa dalam pembuatan tugas proyek yang membutuhkan video sebagai produk akhir. Platform aplikasi-aplikasi tersebut menggunakan teknologi AI untuk membantu pengguna membuat video yang menarik dan efektif. Dalam pelaksanaannya, kegiatan pengabdian ini dibagi dalam beberapa sesi yaitu sesi eksplanasi dari pembicara, sesi uji coba praktik news anchor, dan sesi interaktif yaitu pemberian komentar. Implikasi praktis dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk mengembangkan metode yang lebih kreatif, inovatif, dan efektif untuk meningkatkan keterampilan siswa dalam mengeksplor kreativitas khususnya yang berkaitan dengan penggunaan aplikasi video. Selain itu, kegiatan ini dapat memberikan kontribusi literatur yang berkaitan dengan pemanfaatan aplikasi video dalam proses pembelajaran yang menghasilkan produk. Penggunaan ragam aplikasi video memberikan pengalaman praktis dalam mengaplikasikan teknologi AI dalam dunia nyata. Dengan demikian, penggunaan ragam aplikasi video AI dapat memberikan manfaat signifikan bagi mahasiswa dalam menghasilkan proyek video yang profesional dan efisien.

Abstract

Kegiatan dengan judul “Pemanfaatan Canva Animated Video dalam Pembuatan Video Speaking Academic” dilaksanakan untuk memberikan opsi solusi dalam mengatasi kendala penguasan materi dalam Speaking Acdemic, terutama karena keterbatasan akses teknologi. Tujuan dilaksanakan kegiatan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan keterampilan bagi peserta dalam hal berbicara formal, membekali peserta dengan kemampuan teknologi melalui pembuatan video animasi, serta mendorong kreativitas dan kepercayaan diri dalam presentasi. Peserta kegiatan ini adalah mahasiswa semester tiga Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Alwashliyah Medan. Kegiatan ini juga dimaksudkan untuk memberikan satu metode pembelajaran inovatif untuk mendukung kemampuan akademik dan digital mahasiswa peserta. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa peserta berhasil membuat video animasi kreatif yang mengintegrasikan kemampuan berbicara dengan elemen visual menarik, meningkatkan kompetensi teknologi, dan kesiapan mereka untuk menghadapi tuntutan dunia akademik serta profesional.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the anxiety experienced by students during the thesis proposal writing process, focusing on the factors that influence the level of anxiety and the strategies used by students to overcome it. This study uses a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry method to explore students' personal experiences in depth. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with the participants from two final semester students in the English Education Study Program, Al Washliyah University, Medan. The results of the study indicate that the anxiety experienced by students in writing thesis proposals is triggered by various internal and external factors. Although students try various strategies to reduce anxiety, such as dividing tasks into small parts, consulting with lecturers, and using relaxation techniques, anxiety remains a major obstacle in the thesis proposal writing process. This study provides important insights into the importance of more empathetic and systematic guidance, as well as adequate support to improve students' mental well-being during the thesis writing process.

Abstract

Based on the results of observations made in class X SMA Alwashliyah Petumbukan, it can be seen that the ability of students to write in a recount text, students still difficulty in making sentences in English because of the lack of was still low vocabulary, they have difficulty in developing their ideas into writing because of the lack of media. Based on the background in this research, this research aimed to improve the writing skill of recount text of grade X students by using wordless picture book. This type of research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of 4 stages, namely planning, action, observation and reflection. The subjects of this study were X grade students of SMA Alwashliyah Petumbukan in the academic year 2023/2024, totaling 19 students including 5 men and 14 women. Data collection used 2 ways, namely quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data collection using the results of students’ writing recount text in pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test II, while qualitative data collection used the results of observations, field notes and interviews.The results of the study stated that the use of Wordless Picture Book media can improve students' writing skills.It can be seen that there was significant increase from cycle 1 to cycle 2. The average score obtained from post-test I was 67.11 with a passing percentage of 37%. Furthermore, in cycle 2 the average student score was 82.89 with a passing percentage of 89%. This showed that using wordless picture book can improve students' skill in writing recount text and this research was successful.

Abstract

This study investigated the problems encountered by first-year university students in writing English at the academic level, focusing on their own view point. Seven participants contributed their writing which elaborated the problems in writing English served as the primary data source. A descriptive analytical method was employed to examine the texts, with the aim of identifying recurring patterns that reflected common writing difficulties. The analysis process involved detecting prominent “problems” in the participants’ writing, followed by interpretation and conceptualization to reveal underlying themes and derive meaning from the data. The findings revealed six major categories of writing problems frequently experienced by the participants: grammatical errors, limited vocabulary, weak writing structure or organization, unfamiliarity with academic writing style, spelling issues, and the incorrect use of punctuation. These problems appeared consistently across the data, highlighting areas in which the participants struggled to meet the expectations of English writing. Such difficulties not only affect the coherence and clarity of their writing but may also influence their confidence and motivation to write. Therefore, supportive instruction, practical exercises, and personalized feedback are essential to help first-year students overcome these hurdles and develop the competence needed for effective writing communication in English.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan minat dan kemampuan dasar Bahasa Inggris pada anak usia dini melalui pendekatan yang bersifat menyenangkan dan sesuai dengan tahapan perkembangan kognitif anak, yakni dengan memodifikasi permainan tradisional sebagai media pembelajaran. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di salah satu PAUD di wilayah Medan Sumatera Utara yang melibatkan serangkaian tahapan berupa pelatihan bagi pendidik, observasi terhadap keterlibatan anak dalam aktivitas pembelajaran, serta pendampingan intensif dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan di kelas. Hasil pelaksanaan menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan ini mampu meningkatkan antusiasme dan partisipasi aktif anak dalam proses pembelajaran, serta memfasilitasi pengenalan kosakata dasar dalam Bahasa Inggris secara lebih natural dan kontekstual. Selain itu, umpan balik dari pendidik dan orang tua mengindikasikan bahwa metode ini bersifat aplikatif, adaptif, serta sesuai dengan karakteristik belajar anak usia dini.
