Abstract

Uncontrolled diabetes might generate the physical and psychological complication. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of Benson’s relaxation and murottal “Ar-Rahmaan” to the fasting blood glucose (FBG) and stress score. This research was quasi experimental study with two group pre test-post test control group design. The research has been done  in the Health Care Center of Maos and “Graha Amanah” Clinic of Maos. Sample technique used total sampling, with 60 according to the inclusion criteria. The respondents were divided into control group and intervention group. Every group had 30 respondents. The intervention group was given Benson’s relaxation and murottal, menwhile the control group was given the Benson’s relaxation only. This intervention was done twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon, for 7 days. The results showed the difference of the FBG level before and after intervention between groups (p value=0,000; Z score=- 4,097;Mean+SD intervention group= -66,300+45,672;Mean+SD control group= -23,766+13,438). Benson’s relaxation and murottal therapy could decrease FBG  significantly.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that can lead to multiple long-term complications in the human body including erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is a condition that commonly affects men and may reduce their quality of life. However, ED amongst men with type 2 DM (T2DM) has rarely been assessed and addressed by nurses who have an essential role in providing holistic patient care. Objective: This study aimed to describe ED among men with T2DM based on their demographic characteristics and health profiles. Methods: This was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach of 32 male respondents who were selected through convenience sampling in the outpatient department of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The data was collected by using the erectile function’s domain of Indonesian version of International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). Descriptive statistics were used to present this study’s findings. Results: The results showed that  62.5% of the participants had uncontrolled blood glucose levels with an average random blood glucose of 207.75 ± 77.21 mg/dl. Only four respondents (12.5%) had received sexual counselling. Twenty-nine respondents (90,6%) had ED which were categorized into mild (17.2%), mild to moderate (6.9%), moderate (24.1%) and severe (51.7%).Conclusion: ED levels varied across age, duration of T2DM, random blood glucose levels, previous history of smoking, current smoking status, sexual counselling experience, complications, and occupation levels. Severe ED was common amongst men with T2DM in this study. Nurses should assess patient’s sexual function regularly and identify the effects of ED in men with T2DM. Early detection of ED could allow nurses to plan adequate intervention and health education to provide better outcomes for men with T2DM.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol in a Post-Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) patients with lower extremity fractures. The case study was conducted on two patients: an adult patient with a closed-tibialis dextral fracture and an elderly patient with an intertrochanteric femur sinistral fracture. Data collection methods included direct observation, interviews, and the utilization of ERAS-standardized assessment tools such as the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), and early mobilization observation forms. The results showed a decrease in pain within the first 24 hours post-ORIF from VAS 5 to 2, a progression of early mobilization from sitting to standing within a day, and an anxiety reduction. The discussion emphasizes the key of ERAS components: multimodal pain management, early ambulation, and patient education. The study concluded that ERAS is effective in enhancing both physical and psychological recovery in post-ORIF patients especially to manage pain, improve mobilization and reduce anxiety.

Abstract

Purpose: To describe dietary behaviors and examine relationships between selected factors and dietary behaviors among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.Method: Seventy T2DM patients from a hospital in Yogyakarta who met the inclusion criteria were recruited. Patient’s dietary behaviors were measured by the Dietary Behaviors Questionnaire developed for this study with adequate reliability. The questionnaire comprised of four dimensions: recognizing the amount of calorie needs, selecting healthy diet, arranging a meal plan, and managing dietary behaviors challenges. Higher scores indicate better dietary behaviors.Result: More than half of the patients were women (54.3%) with an average age of 56.8 years and diabetes duration of 9.7 years. The results revealed a moderate level of the total score of dietary behaviors. Considering each dimension, the results showed a moderate level of recognizing the amount of calorie needs, selecting healthy diet, and managing dietary behaviors challenges. The patients reported a high level of arranging meal plans. Pearson’s correlation was used to examine the relationships between selected factors and dietary behaviors. There was a positive significant relationship between the knowledge regarding diabetic diet and the total dietary behaviors scores (r = .36, p< .01). There were positive significant relationships between the knowledge regarding diabetic diet and the dimensions of recognizing the amount of calorie needs (r = .27, p< .05), selecting healthy diet (r = .35, p< .01), and managing dietary behaviors challenges (r = .28, p< .05). In contrast, the findings indicated no significant relationship between knowledge regarding diabetic diet and arranging a meal plan dimension. Furthermore, there was no significant relationship between the diabetes duration and dietary behaviors. Conclusion: Dietary behaviors among T2DM patients in Yogyakarta were at a moderate level. Knowledge regarding diabetic diet is essential. Further study regarding intervention in increasing patients’ knowledge is needed to achieve better dietary behaviors. Keywords: Dietary behaviors, type 2 diabetes mellitus, knowledge, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Abstract

Appendicitis is inflammation of the vermiform appendix and is considered a common cause of abdominal diseases in low and middle-income countries, including Indonesia. In Indonesia, the incidence of appendicitis is highest compared to other cases of abdominal emergencies. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate surgical treatment significantly reduce the mortality and morbidity rate of this disease. Surgery will trigger stress reactions, both physiological and psychological, that can cause anxiety. Appendicitis also cause pain, which is felt both before surgery and as a post-surgery. Benson Relaxation Therapy can be effective in reducing both anxiety and pain. This study used a case study and the nursing process approach for people with appendicitis. The nursing process consisted of assessing the patient, analyzing nursing problems, determining priority problems, creating a nursing care plan, implementing the nursing care plan, evaluating the results of implementation, and documenting the nursing process during pre-, intra-, and post-surgery. The sample of this study was an adult male patient with appendicitis who underwent appendectomy and was hospitalized at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital, Yogyakarta, from November 4 to 7, 2024. The patient received Benson Relaxation Therapy pre- and post-surgery. The instruments used in this study were an assessment form, the Amsterdam preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) to measure anxiety, and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to assess the pain score. The results showed a significant decrease in anxiety and pain levels after regular Benson Relaxation Therapy pre- and post-surgery. This research concluded that Benson Relaxation Therapy is effective in reducing anxiety and for pain management, especially for patients with appendectomy.
