Abstract

Indonesia's medical devices industry indicates substantial growth recently. However, domestic products are less competitive than imported products. This study tries to fill the gap by presenting a more robust analysis on the collaborative innovation process of new medical devices to support SMEs’ competitiveness through innovation and standardization. This study employed qualitative case study approach by using holistic multiple case design, namely HFNC and Dharcov-23S GLP innovation process. We have discovered the activities in the standardization process for each stage of the innovation process and the specific type of standards that SMEs should fulfill. We also capture multi-stakeholder cooperation in supporting SMEs in each activity. As result, the role of multi-stakeholder collaboration is highlighted in supporting SMEs along the innovation and standardization process to gain market competitiveness. Actors involved in each innovation process activity have disparate backgrounds, capabilities, and knowledge, such as PRI, industry, government (Public testing laboratory, National Public Procurement Agency, MoH), medical experts, hospitals, and users.

Abstract

Abstract. The strategy for utilizing research results through collaboration between stakeholders is crucial in developing agricultural innovation system. This study examines the multi-stakeholders collaboration on the scaling process of the Jajar Legowo (Jarwo) Super technological package as the research result of the Agricultural Research and Development Agency (Balitbangtan), Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Indonesia. Employing the innovation platform framework, this study explores the multi-stakeholders’ perspectives by conducting semi-structured interview with related stakeholders: researchers, policy makers, disseminators, and local governments. The innovation platform framework is applied to map the actors, roles and functions that support the scaling process along the value chain from the problem identification, towards technology development through experimentation and the upscaling process in the system. The study finds that the innovation platform succesfully improve the rice productivity in some regions despite some challenges. Instead of full technology application, farmers prefer integratge them with indigenous practice due to the limited absorptive capacity, socio-economic background and natural conditions of the region. Also, the findings highlight the gap in multistakeholder relation despite the central rolef of the central government that not only act as a policy maker but also technlogy developer, disseminator, and logistic providers. The goverment is suggested to enhance the institutional arrangements by engaging industry in input logistic system to provide farmers’ access on technology supply and integrate policoes/programs with the local government and  other related stakeholders to accelerate the upscaling process. Abstract

Abstract

Oxidative stress has long been associated with increased risk for several diseases. Antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules and delays or prevents oxidative damage. Natural phenolic and flavonoid compounds are plant secondary metabolites directly contributing to antioxidant activity. Fibraurea tinctoria Lour, often called the yellow root, is a plant that has long been known in the traditional medicine of the native tribes of West Kalimantan to treat several diseases, including malaria, jaundice, and diabetes. This study aimed to quantify the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents and antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of yellow root stems. Yellow root stems were extracted by maceration in 96% ethanol for four days. The total phenolic, flavonoid, and antioxidant activities were measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu, AlCl3, and DPPH methods. Phytochemical screening showed that the ethanol extract of yellow root stems contains phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and steroids/triterpenoids. The total phenol and flavonoid contents were 40.2 mg GAE/g extract and 61.2 mg QE/g extract, respectively. The ethanol extract of yellow root stems showed moderate DPPH scavenging activity, with an IC50 of 152.13 ppm. From this study, it can be concluded that this plant could be a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Abstract

The Jarwo Super innovation platform is identified as a framework for introducing Jarwo Super rice cultivation technology through the use of technological components developed for irrigated rice fields. This research examines the determining factors for the success of the collaboration process in producing agricultural innovation resulting from research and development in Indonesia. Using an innovation platform framework, this research conducted semi-structured interviews with relevant stakeholders, including researchers, policy makers, information disseminators, and local governments, to investigate multi-stakeholder perspectives. The Multi Channel Dissemination Structure (SDMC) of the Agricultural Research and Development Agency, which was created as a policy scheme starting with research, assessment, development, and application and feedback on technology, depicts actor collaboration. The findings of this study highlight the importance of three elements—demand-based participation (innovation evolution), capacity building, and commitment—for achieving multi-stakeholder collaboration. The first component, demand-based participatory, consists of implementation procedures, testing, evaluation, and research. further, the capacity building component indicates that a platform for experimentation, learning, and knowledge development is necessary for successful collaboration. The third factor is commitment which aims to encourage new developments, where the innovation platform can be a solution according to needs based on goals and vision and as a form of legitimacy for the innovation produced. We suggest that these factors can be of interest for practical application by experts to minimize uncertainty in innovation outcomes and increase the effectiveness of decision making.

Abstract

The government of Indonesia has a changing strategy for Science and Technology (S&T) development. This condition has influenced institutional development, which in turn may have affected the transformational role of public research institutes. This study attempts to investigate the trajectory of Indonesian S&T development strategy from the colonial era through the Old Older, the New Order, and following the Asian Financial Crisis. In response to this changing of development strategy, it eventually analyzes how the role of public research institutes has transformed, by takings LIPI and BPPT as case studies. This study employs a historical approach by using interview and document analysis to investigate the trajectory of S&T development in Indonesia and the transformation of LIPI’s and BPPT’s role. The findings suggest that political transformation has much affected the government’s strategy on Indonesian S&T development. Moreover, LIPI and BPPT tend to transform their role following the government’s strategy by giving less consideration to either demand from society and industry or their strong point of early inception.
