Abstract

Grit is a personality trait possessed by everyone, but what sets individuals apart is the degree to which they possess it. In many educational studies, it has been found that grit significantly contributes to the academic success of both students and university students. Grit is a malleable personality trait that can still be developed through internal and external factors. Research involving internal factors like hope, growth mindset, and purpose has been widely conducted. Similarly, external factors, one of which includes parenting styles, have also been explored. Published research indicates that there is a relationship between types of parenting styles (authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian) and grit, with varying results. However, there hasn't been research providing information on the extent of the correlation (r-value) and the effect size of this relationship. The goal of this meta-analysis is to measure the correlation between each parenting style and grit, taking into consideration the effect size. The total sample size in this study includes 8,259 individuals from 12 studies deemed eligible. The results of this meta-analysis reveal that authoritative parenting style has a weak/low correlation with grit (r = 0.214; 95% CI [0.129-0.298]). The authoritarian parenting style has a low correlation with grit (r = 0.106; 95% CI [0.038-0.173]). The permissive parenting style has a very weak/small correlation with grit (r = 0.005; 95% CI [-0.088-0.198]). Heterogeneity tests show positive results, with no indication of publication bias for authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles. The implications of this research should be followed up by examining other external factors that can influence the development of grit.

Abstract

The behavior of road users, especially motorcyclists and cyclists play an important role in the occurrence of accidents. Environmental factors on road, such as numbers of vehicles that share the same space which in turn will cause congestion to occur and other driver's behavior will affect the driver's emotional condition. The purpose of this study is to investigate car drivers’ visual attention and emotional state when detecting motorcyclists and cyclists whose presence on the streets are related to safe driving behavior. This study uses five animation clips that describe phenomenon of traffic and driving in Jakarta as the case studies. Emotional wheel (EW) is used to analyze the emotional state of the driver. Result suggests that animation clips can be a helpful tool to predict drivers’ visual attention in real life traffic scenarios. This study also indicated that unpleasant emotion can affect a driver’s attention management while driving.

Abstract

Several accidents while driving occur in early adulthood. This study aims to describe risky driving-behavior in early adulthood using four-wheeled vehicles and to determine risky driving-behavior in early adulthood which is influenced by aggressive driving and attitudes towards driving safety. The measurement tools used are risk driving scale, driving anger inventory and attitude scale towards driving safety. The method used in this study was quantitative, with a purposive sampling technique. The subjects obtained were 151 car drivers who had a driver's license for at least one year. The results of this study are that there are relations between aggressive driving and driving safety attitudes on one hand, and risky driving-behavior on the other.

Abstract

Measuring persistence or grit among university students in Indonesia is crucial, given the unique characteristics of the Indonesian context compared to Western countries. Indonesian researchers have predominantly utilized Duckworth's grit scale, which consists of two dimensions. This study aims to develop a grit measurement tool for Indonesian university students by adding a third dimension, independence, and to conduct a psychometric evaluation of the instrument. The grit construct was redefined based on three new dimensions, followed by measurements and analyses including content validity testing, readability testing, item discrimination analysis, reliability testing, and confirmatory analysis. The results showed a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.896 and a McDonald's Omega coefficient of 0.898. The standardized loading factor for items ranged from 0.608 to 0.816. Fit indices results were as follows: CFI 0.928; TLI 0.906; RMSEA 0.08; SRMR 0.043. The analysis demonstrated that the grit measurement tool has strong reliability coefficients and fits well in confirmatory analysis, indicating its validity as a 12-item instrument.
