Abstract

Modality is a key in articulating the authors' viewpoints in their arguments. To address the gap, this recent study aims to thoroughly describe the interpersonal meaning in terms of modality within English Literature’s undergraduate theses. Textual analysis using a corpus-based approach was rigorously applied. This research utilized AntConc 4.2.0 version as instrument. The researcher meticulously selected 40 undergraduate theses between March and August 2023. The SFL concept proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) was implemented to analyze the data. The findings demonstrated that undergraduate students largely used modalization in the context of probability across the undergraduate theses. It indicates that they utilize the modality to persuade readers by describing upcoming developments and exchanging information with them. Undergraduate students additionally employed medium modality with greater frequency than low modality. It indicates that they perceive the readers as having the same status as others, which promotes a peaceful relationship between them. It suggests that undergraduate students intentionally become involved with the readers through the ideas presented in the undergraduate theses, harmonizing their positions of authority with the readers, leading to a warm connection between them. Thus, it reflects the close distance between conversational participants.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of integrating Pear Deck and the Flashcard Factory features with the Presentation, Practice, and Production (PPP) method in enhancing students’ vocabulary skills in a mixed-ability classroom. The study employed a mixed-methods design with 36 students from two mixed-ability classes at PKBM (Community Service). Quantitative data were collected using a quasi-experimental method, which relied on pre- and post-test results, and analyzed with t-tests and descriptive statistics in SPSS. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant increase in vocabulary mastery, with a rise of 8.85 points compared to the control group of 1.93 (p < 0.001) with all slow-learner students experiencing an increase in scores, which confirmed the alternative hypothesis (H₁) that the use of PPP, Pear Deck and Flashcard Factory was effective in improving students' vocabulary. However, qualitative interview data analyzed using thematic analysis revealed mixed results among high-achieving students. Qualitative results showed that students found the vocabulary learning process more interesting and well-structured than the conventional one. However, there were challenges in terms of the pace of learning, as well as too much media that actually disrupted concentration.

Abstract

Interpersonal meaning expresses the social role connections that exist between both parties in communication. The current study aimed at discovering interpersonal mean-ing in related to MOOD preferences from inside of Folklore album arranged by Taylor Swift. MOOD refers to the grammatical structure that indicates the function of a sen-tence in expressing the songwriter’s attitude. Using a qualitative research method, this paper reports on MOOD choices as well as speech functions from inside of the chosen tunes of Folklore album. This research revealed that MOOD type of declarative clause and speech function of statement dominate the lyrics of the chosen tunes, while speech function of offer does not appear. Thus, the songwriter transmits the thoughts on the lyrics to the audience by providing the information. Considering the supplied criteria, the use of the singular pronoun “I” as the primary subject effectively fosters a sense of interpersonal connections. However, a deeper investigation of interpersonal meaning is required in order to enhance students’ English skills, particularly in the expression of attitudes in various language capabilities in related to reading, listening, as well as speaking.

Abstract

Believing that the film industry is getting worse by utilizing simple plots and only emphasizing on the editing and the cosmetics, European filmmakers and theorists make their own style of realistic film movements as a reaction to Hollywood’s mainstream filmmaking style. One of which is the famed Dogme 95 Manifesto film movement in Denmark propagated by Lars von Trier. Dogme 95 Manifesto is a set of rules that needs to be followed by filmmakers in order to make a Dogme film. It is believed that by following this rule will restrain the filmmakers’ creativity, focusing more on the realism inside the film, and “purifying” the film industry. In this paper, we analyze realism in Dogme 95 through one of its successful milestones: The Celebration by Thomas Vinterburg through its cinematography and Dogme 95 rules within the film. We argue that as opposed to bringing realistic images on the screen, The Celebration brings atmospheric realism by providing a consistent feel of ‘relatability’ and presence inside the story to the spectators.

Abstract

Urban space has been one of the most underexplored elements analyzed in literary works. However, as urban space gradually emerges as a culturally influencing element, a casual perusal of any text that employs urban space might result in an oversimplified analysis. This study examines the urban space of After Dark (2004), authored by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami (b. 1949). Accounting for the ways urban space is interwoven with the socio-cultural context, this study establishes a spatial reading of Murakami’s After Dark through the description of the city. With a poststructuralist approach, this study discusses how urban space is utilized and how it serves as an important part of the text instead of a mere backdrop; it reinforces the possibilities of setting as a thematic approach to major issues such as self-identity and the marginalization of women. As it is concluded, the urban space the novel presents have succeeded to show that they form, to some extent, women’s behaviours both directly and indirectly. Hence, the setting may present the main theme further analysed.
