Abstract

The writing process approach views a writing learner as a creator of text, and hence, he needs to experience what writers actually do as they write, and so do students in EFL writing classes. The approach offers an answer to the need of helping the students develop their writing skill without their having to master the basic fundamental elements of writing, i.e. grammar, prior to attending the writing courses. This article highlights the potential of the process approach-with which students go through a write-rewrite process-in giving students a scaffold to work in a real, live process of how a real writer engages in the process of writing. However, the most important harvest is the fact that students have become more confident in expressing their ideas in writings.

Abstract

Written corrective feedback (WCF) in L2 writing classrooms has gained considerable attention in applied linguistics research over the past twenty years. WCF may take different forms of teacher’s responses to errors in students’ texts, among others Coded-Correction Feedback (CCF) and Non-Coded Correction Feedback (NCCF). A number of research studies on the effectiveness of various types of corrective feedback have been undertaken; however the effect of CCF and NCCF on the quality of students’ writing in Indonesian context has not yet been explored. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Coded Correction Feedback and Non-Coded Correction Feedback on senior high school students’ writing quality. This study investigated the effect of Coded-Correction Feedback (CCF) and Non-Coded Correction Feedback (NCCF) on the quality of Indonesian EFL students’ writing. It involved 53 senior high school students of 11th Grade. Each student was exposed to two different treatments (CCF and NCCF) and the students’ writing quality, after receiving each type of treatments or WCF, was then measured. The effect of each feedback was estimated by comparing the individual students’ scores in writing composition after receiving CCF with their scores after receiving NCCF. The result of this study revealed that the quality of the students’ writing with CCF was better than that with NCCF. The findings of this study showed that the quality of the students’ writing receiving CCF was better than that receiving NCCF because CCF promotes awareness with noticing as well as understanding. Hence, the use of CCF can be considered more effective than NCCF.  Therefore, it is suggested that CCF be employed in giving corrective feedback to the students’ compositions to improve the quality of their writing, and that teachers employ CCF when giving WCF to improve the quality of students’ writing.

Abstract

Abstract: Attitudes Toward Extensive Reading Among English Teachers of Senior High Schools. This survey aims to investigate the attitudes of 32 English teachers of public senior high schools in a district in East Java Province, Indonesia, toward Extensive Reading (ER) as one of the ways of improving reading habit, covering the teachers’ cognitive, behavioral, and affective attitudes. Questionnaires in the form of closed-ended and open-ended questions were used as the main instrument to collect the data, complemented with interviews with sampled teachers to gain more in-depth understanding of the phenomena under study. The results show that cognitively, most English teachers have positive cognitive attitudes, which implies good understanding of ER. The teachers’ affective attitudes also reflect their eagerness to know more about implementing ER and to find ways of solving potential problems. However, in terms of behavioral attitudes, the data show that the teachers are still in doubt to conduct ER program due to several problems, such as time allotment, reading resources, students’ motivation, curriculum and school programs, learning assessment, and school rules. The findings imply the need for policy makers at school and government’s educational agencies, as well as experts in the field to help support the teachers in setting up ER program at schools by addressing the issues that teachers are concerned with.

Abstract

Incorporating critical thinking and English as a medium of instruction for elementary school studentsThis case study aims to find out how teachers of the International Class Program at an elementary school in Malang incorporated critical thinking (CT) pedagogy in teaching subjects with English as a Medium of Instruction. Eighteen teachers filled in an online questionnaire, and two of them were interviewed. Analysis of one pre-recorded video for English class (lasted for 13 minutes) and one video of Math class delivered through Zoom meeting (lasted for 29 minutes) was done to investigate how teachers triggered students’ thinking in the classroom practice. Also, an analysis of three lesson plans was done to dig further information about teachers’ teaching practices. The findings indicated that the teachers have practical knowledge of CT pedagogy from reading and workshops that were not necessarily focused on CT. Textbooks were mainly used to guide the teachers’ teaching, supported by audio-visual media. Questions primarily were used to trigger students’ higher-order thinking by connecting the texts with the students’ experiences in real life. Despite the implicit policy of CT, the teachers have implemented CT strategies in the International Class Program. Overall, the teachers have played as more knowledgeable others that facilitated the students’ learning to think critically. However, they were not confident whether the teaching material they were developed supported CT pedagogy implementation. Thus, the study findings revealed their need for supervisors to evaluate the content of teaching material and practical guidance to conduct thinking routines for the young learners in the subjects with English as a medium of instruction.

Abstract

This current study focused on identifying teacher’s code mixing and code switching within EFL classroom. A descriptive qualitative method was implemented using the concept of code mixing along with code-switching by Muysken and Romaine. The research results additionally demonstrated that code mixing and code switching have been employed in a variety of common classroom circumstances, including introducing the material, discussing the material, posing questions, and concluding the material. The instructor performed two sorts of code mixing: insertion and alternation. Besides, inter-sentential switching along with tag switching or emblematic switching are both kinds of code-switching utilized by the instructor within EFL classroom. As a result, code mixing and code switching pedagogical strategy is highly suggested in bilingual or multilingual classroom to simplify the process of instruction and learning where code mixing along with code-switching are implemented in several typical classroom situations.

Abstract

Gamification is considered as a strategy to involve students in solving problems related to learning English, rather than playing games. Duolingo, an application that uses gamification, is suitable for junior high school students as a formal classroom setting in English learning. This study aimed at investigating whether the use of gamification in Duolingo App can improve the listening proficiency of junior high school students in English. This research uses quasi-experimental design with quantitative approach. The data is collected using test and observation and analyzed using SPSS 26 App. The results show that the sig. (2 tailed) indicated is 0.002 meaning that there is difference between post-test of experiment class and control class. It is concluded that gamification in Duolingo app affects English listening proficiency of junior high school students. Hence, Duolingo App has the potential to serve as a valuable tool for educators to enhance their students' listening skills. Additionally, gamification can form the foundation for the development of technological learning resources. However, this study has some limitations, and further research involving different educational levels, media, and longer experiment duration is necessary to obtain detailed and reliable results that can be applied to the broader population.

Abstract

Interpersonal meaning expresses the social role connections that exist between both parties in communication. The current study aimed at discovering interpersonal mean-ing in related to MOOD preferences from inside of Folklore album arranged by Taylor Swift. MOOD refers to the grammatical structure that indicates the function of a sen-tence in expressing the songwriter’s attitude. Using a qualitative research method, this paper reports on MOOD choices as well as speech functions from inside of the chosen tunes of Folklore album. This research revealed that MOOD type of declarative clause and speech function of statement dominate the lyrics of the chosen tunes, while speech function of offer does not appear. Thus, the songwriter transmits the thoughts on the lyrics to the audience by providing the information. Considering the supplied criteria, the use of the singular pronoun “I” as the primary subject effectively fosters a sense of interpersonal connections. However, a deeper investigation of interpersonal meaning is required in order to enhance students’ English skills, particularly in the expression of attitudes in various language capabilities in related to reading, listening, as well as speaking.

Abstract

Modality is a key in articulating the authors' viewpoints in their arguments. To address the gap, this recent study aims to thoroughly describe the interpersonal meaning in terms of modality within English Literature’s undergraduate theses. Textual analysis using a corpus-based approach was rigorously applied. This research utilized AntConc 4.2.0 version as instrument. The researcher meticulously selected 40 undergraduate theses between March and August 2023. The SFL concept proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) was implemented to analyze the data. The findings demonstrated that undergraduate students largely used modalization in the context of probability across the undergraduate theses. It indicates that they utilize the modality to persuade readers by describing upcoming developments and exchanging information with them. Undergraduate students additionally employed medium modality with greater frequency than low modality. It indicates that they perceive the readers as having the same status as others, which promotes a peaceful relationship between them. It suggests that undergraduate students intentionally become involved with the readers through the ideas presented in the undergraduate theses, harmonizing their positions of authority with the readers, leading to a warm connection between them. Thus, it reflects the close distance between conversational participants.
