Abstract

This study is about an analysis of grammatical and mechanical errors made by the students across the three levels of writing ability: high, average, and low. The grammatical and mechanical aspects analyzed were subject-verb agreement, sentence fragment, conjunction, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. The present study aimed to find out the most common grammatical and mechanical errors and to identify the percentage of each error found in the essays. Students’ essays taken from their English writing quiz were collected as the data since they might contain grammatical and mechanical errors. This study employed textual analysis and was supported by simple calculation to determine the frequency of each error found. The data were analyzed by identifying the errors, explaining why the errors are incorrect and writing the proper corrections, and evaluating the errors to get the percentage of each error found. The results showed that the most common grammatical error found is the use of conjunction, that is around 20.6%, and the most common mechanical error found is punctuation by around 21.6%.

Abstract

This study aims to find out that relative power (P) variables are not only social status, age, education and wealth. Another aim is to show that negative politeness strategies do not always belong to someone with higher social power. Relative power is one element of social variables that decides politeness strategies. Pride and Prejudice reveal that integrity, pride and love are also variables of relative power. They can also prove that though someone’s social status is not high and her social distance from another participant is asymmetric, she could have power over someone with higher social status. Power characterized by integrity, pride, belief, and freedom from being dominated is called personal power; meanwhile, it is a power determined by a good personality, attractive physical appearance, and referent power. This study uses a qualitative method, and the data is mainly from Pride and Prejudice. The main character of Pride and Prejudice shows us that integrity, pride, and love could be the variables of power deriving from Personal and Referent power. Those powers could develop and deepen relative power in social variables to be applied in politeness studies.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzed grammatical intricacy (GI) found in written and spoken texts represented by 20 product descriptions and 20 advertisement videos of IKEA. The data were collected purposively from IKEA’s official website and YouTube Channel. The objectives of this study were to investigate the complexity of IKEA product descriptions and advertisement videos using GI and to identify which text has a higher average GI score. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method and formula proposed by Eggins to calculate the complexity of the texts. The analysis process included identifying the clauses and sentences based on Hogue & Oshima’s theories, counting the number of clauses and sentences, and calculating the GI score. The results showed that (1) product descriptions and advertisement videos composed by IKEA possessed a low level of complexity as the average GI score of both texts is below 2.00. (2) Advertisement videos reach a higher score (1.74) compared to product descriptions (1.57); however, the difference is not significant. The results of this study may contribute to two important implications, both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the results enrich the knowledge on grammatical intricacy. Practically, this study provides an insight for marketing practitioners to compose marketing discourse with strong messages to lure customers’ attention.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing transposition techniques and the translation quality of the Indonesian subtitle of Knives Out Movie. Subtitles are needed in the entertainment industry, particularly to translate narratives and dialogues, for viewers understanding although the grammatical rules between source and target language are different. This study aims to identify the most dominant type of transposition techniques, and to assess the accuracy and acceptability aspect of the translation quality. This research uses qualitative methods. There are 413 data of Indonesian subtitles applied transposition techniques. The most dominant type is structure shift with 37.31% of the data followed by unit shift with 33.18% of the data, intra-system shift with 22.03% of the data, class shift with 4.12% of the data, and level shift with 3.39% of the data. Shifts occurred because of the grammatical differences between the source language (English) and the target language (Indonesian). For the translation quality assessment, the final score is 2.83, which means the Indonesian subtitles that apply transposition techniques are accurate and acceptable. There are 90% accurate translations and 10% less accurate translations. For acceptability, there are 88% acceptable translations and 12% less acceptable translations. This analysis can enrich research in translation studies and serve as a reference or additional material for the Translation course.

Abstract

This present study aims to observe: (1) the translation strategies used to translate phrasal verbs from English into the Indonesian language based on Baker’s theory; and (2) the translation assessment of phrasal verbs focusing on the accuracy and acceptability aspect based on Nababan’s parameter. This study is classified as a descriptive qualitative because the data consists of a lingual unit, specifically phrasal verbs. The analysis is also supported by simple calculations to determine the frequency and percentage of each translation strategy and its accuracy and acceptability. The data source is a Line Webtoon digital comic entitled Lore Olympus which analyzes the English and Indonesian phrasal verbs translation. The results show as follows: (1) there are only three translation strategies used, namely paraphrasing (95%), omitting the entire idiom (3.3%), and omitting a play on idiom (1.7%). (2) The translation of phrasal verbs is mostly considered accurate (93.3%) and fully acceptable (100%). Based on the findings, it implies that the translator of a digital comic Lore Olympus should prioritize paraphrasing strategies to maintain accuracy and acceptability when translating phrasal verbs from English into Indonesian.

Abstract

The quality of the research background provides readers with the essential context needed to understand the research problem. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance the quality of this section. This study investigates the comparison of the Move and Step structures between engineering and non-engineering students’ final project report background using Swales’ (2012) Create a Research Space (CARS) Move/Step analysis model. Data were collected from 71 students’ final project reports at a polytechnic in Bandung, comprising 35 from engineering fields and 36 from non-engineering fields. The results indicate that both fields incorporate Move 1, Move 2, and Move 3. In Move 1, both fields use Step 2 (Making topic Generalization) to establish a research area. Meanwhile, in Move 2, step 2 (Indicating a Gap) and step 4 (Continuing a Tradition) are frequently applied in non-engineering fields to establish a research niche. In Move 3, both fields use step 1A (Outlining Purposes) to describe their studies. The findings suggest no significant difference in the Move and Step structures between engineering and non-engineering fields. These insights may contribute to improving the quality of students’ final project reports.

Abstract

This study investigated the functions of sentences used in Colorbox's Instagram captions applying Greenbaum & Nelson (2009) framework: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. The aims of this study were to identify and analyze their use and to identify which types are the most frequently utilized. To achieve these objectives, 30 captions containing 58 sentences posted by Colorbox from January to December 2024 were selected using purposive random sampling. The captions were analyzed using qualitative methods. Each sentence in the text was examined and categorized based on its function. The results showed that imperative sentences are the most frequently used (46%), followed by interrogative sentences (28%), declarative sentences (21%), and exclamation sentences (5%). Imperative sentences are often used to encourage actions such as commenting or tapping on a link. The other sentence types are used to provide information, ask questions, or express emotions. These findings showed that Colorbox uses sentence functions effectively to communicate and interact with its audience. The results of this study give two implications both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the results enrich the knowledge on functions of sentences. Practically, the results provide an insight for content creators and marketing practitioners to write more interesting, clear, and engaging captions.
