Abstract

The purpose of this research was to improve the Students’ procedure text writing achievement at English Conversation Club (ECC) MAN Kota Blitar by applying Padlet. The research design used was classroom action research (CAR) which covered 4 steps; 1) Planning, 2) Acting, 3) Observing and evaluating and 4) Reflecting. The Subjects of this research were 50 students from X Grade who join ECC in MAN Kota Blitar.The data collection methods of this research were taken from administering tests and distributing the questionnaire. The research result proved that the use of Padlet for teaching writing of procedure text could increase the students’ writing achievement of procedure text from preliminary action 57.55 increased to 72.85 in cycle 1. Based on the result of cycle 1, it did not fulfill the minimum criterion mastery 75.00; therefore, the researchers continued the research to cycle 2 and got satisfying result 82.65. Furthermore, the students’ of ECC MAN Kota Blitar also presented positive attitude toward the use of Padlet in teaching and learning writing of procedure text.

Abstract

One important character which should be owned by teacher that influence the outcome of teacher is called as teacher self – efficacy. However, the correlation between teacher’ self – efficacy and linguistic proficiency hasn’t really investigated yet. Hence, this research aims to examine the connection between language proficiency to their efficacy perceptions. The participants of this research were 11 teachers of private University in Indonesia with various demographic characteristics. They were asked to answer related to the Teacher Efficacy Scale (TES) and recognize their linguistic proficiency self – rating. The statistical analyzing result which used Pearson – product moment correlation and Regression analysis showed a signification correlation between teacher’s self – efficacy and their proficiency level. The regression results also affirmed that the possibility level of proficiency of self – efficacy beliefs of teachers in classroom activity. The findings of this research are elaborated in relation to the previous research.

Abstract

In this digital era, we cannot ignore that the use of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has given many benefits for both teachers and students in English instruction, especially in facilitating the students with an enjoyable and interesting learning experience. This research is a case study which aimed to investigate: 1) How is the implementation of CALL in the EFL setting, 2) How are the students’ attitude toward the use of CALL in English teaching and learning process, 3) How are the students’ achievement after the implementation of CALL in English teaching-learning process. The Subjects of this research were 30 students at SMA Laboratorium UM Malang. The data of this research were collected from the interview, observation checklist, questionnaire, and tests. The result of this research revealed that the implementation of CALL gave a positive effect on the students' achievement and broaden students' experience in learning English based on authentic context. Moreover, the students also presented positive responses toward the used of CALL in the English teaching-learning process.

Abstract

This study was held to find English learning strategy used by 120 students of Faculty of Economics Universitas Merdeka Pasuruan and to discover their different level of intrinsic motivation and learning style. Oxford's theory of language learning strategy (1990), Amabile's theory of intrinsic motivation (1994) and Reid's theory of learning style (1987) were employed in this study. The data obtained from Language Learning Strategy Scale, Intrinsic Motivation Scale and Learning Style Scale, were analyzed with two way of ANOVA statistical technique. The results explained that there was a significant difference of language learning strategy applied by the students with high, moderate and low level of intrinsic motivation (F = 40.756, p 0.05). There was no significant difference of learning strategy used by the students with auditory, visual, individual or group learning style. Social and meta-cognitive strategies were the most frequent strategy applied by all the students. Visual learning style and group styles were dominantly applied by Economics students 2016/2017 academic year.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to investigate, describe and analyze the direct and indirect effect of endorsing, perceived value, and  perceived usefulness on purchase intention. Statistical population of the present study is all viewer five food vloggers with the most subscribers on YouTube channel in Indonesia. This study uses questionnaires as the research instrument with 200 respondents as the sample. Sampling technique is purposive sampling. This study uses Partial Least Square (PLS) to analyze the data. The result shows there is a significant direct effect of endorser credibility on perceived value and perceived usefulness. In addition, perceived value and perceived usefulness have a significant influence on purchase intention. This study also confirms that perceived value and perceived usefulness mediates the influence of endorser credibility on purchase intention. However, the other result shows that there is no significant relationship between endorser credibility of food vlogger on purchase intention. Distance and price are the main reasons customer has no purchase intention of food product that has been reviewed by endorsers. https://doi.org/10.26905/jmdk.v8i1.3997

Abstract

Abstrak: Bercerita telah menjadi ikon pelestarian budaya lokal. Karena kearifan lokal yang terikat dalam budaya lokal rentan tergerus seiring perubahan zaman, maka upaya untuk menghidupkan kembali dan melestarikannya harus menjadi perhatian utama sebelum menerapkan nilai-nilai tersebut secara nyata. Cerita rakyat telah menjadi media penjelmaan kearifan-kearifan lokal tersebut. Kegiatan PKM ini focus pada penggunaan asosiasi bunyi abjad arab dan fonetik Bahasa Inggris serta penggunaan cerita rakyat dalam pengajaran pengucapan kepada siswa yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing, khususnya dalam konteks Jawa Timur, Indonesia. Ini bertujuan untuk mengatasi kesulitan pelajar dalam menghasilkan suara bahasa Inggris, meningkatkan kompetensi komunikatif mereka, dan juga mempromosikan pendekatan alternatif untuk mengajar pengucapan bagi guru. Tim bekerja sama dengan dua guru Bahasa Inggris SDIT Bina Insan Cendekia, Kota Pasuruan, yang dipilih secara purposive. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan fonetik dengan mengaitkan suara ke abjad arab meningkatkan kualitas pengucapan beberapa pelajar, yang lebih jelas dan mudah dipahami. Kegiatan ini dimaksudkan untuk mempromosikan pembelajaran mandiri bagi siswa karena kemampuan mereka untuk mengenali simbol fonetik memungkinkan mereka untuk menemukan bagaimana sebuah kata diucapkan. Yang terpenting, kegiatan tersebut dapat melibatkan dan memotivasi mereka untuk belajar bahasa asing. Abstract: Storytelling has become an icon of local cultural preservation. Because local wisdom that is tied to local culture is vulnerable to being eroded with changing times, efforts to revive and preserve it must be a major concern before implementing these values in real terms. Folklore has become a medium for the embodiment of these local wisdoms. This PKM activity focuses on the use of associations of Hijaiyah sounds (Arabic alphabet) and English phonetics as well as the use of folklore in teaching pronunciation to students learning English as a foreign language, especially in the context of East Java, Indonesia. It aims to overcome the difficulties of learners in producing English sounds, improve their communicative competence, and also promote alternative approaches to teaching pronunciation for teachers. The team collaborated with two English teachers at SDIT Bina Insan Cendekia, Pasuruan City, who were selected purposively. The findings show that phonetic training by associating sounds to Hijaiyah (Arabic Abjad) improves the quality of some students' pronunciation, which is clearer and easier to understand. It promotes independent learning for students because their ability to recognize phonetic symbols allows them to discover how a word is pronounced. Most importantly, it engages and motivates them to learn a foreign language.

Abstract

Abstrak: Kegiatan PKM ini bertujuan untuk menciptakan siswa yang kompeten dalam keterampilan bahasa Inggris melalui metode pengajaran yang menyenangkan di SDIT Bina Insan Cendekia, Pasuruan yang mana di kota tersebut terdapat tingkat pernikahan dini dan pengangguran yang tinggi. Diketahui dari hasil data yang didapatkan bahwa motivasi belajar masyarakat di daerah tersebut sangat rendah sehingga mengakibatkan dampak yang buruk bagi kesejahteraan penduduk di daerah tersebut. Maka dari itu, tim PKM merancang kegiatan PKM yaitu menggunakan lagu dan cerita rakyat untuk menghidupkan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa-siswi usia dini menggunakan lagu-lagu populer dan cerita rakyat Indonesia yang diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris dan ditampilkan dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang mewakili kearifan lokal Indonesia. Hasil pelatihan ini telah mampu meningkatkan Bahasa Inggris siswa dari 60 ke 81. Kegiatan PKM ini telah menguntungkan siswa karena mereka memiliki kesempatan untuk menyimak dan membawakan lagu dan cerita rakyat dalam bahasa Inggris serta memotivasi mereka untuk berlatih bahasa Inggris mereka lebih aktif dan sering. Selain itu, kegiatan PKM ini juga memberikan insight bagi guru untuk lebih mengeksplorasi dan mengimplementasikan metode pengajaran Bahasa Inggris yang menyenangkan bagi anak-anak sehingga terbangunlah motivasi dan semangat belajar generasi muda.  Abstract:  This PKM activity aims to create students’ English language skills through fun teaching methods at SDIT Bina Insan Cendekia, Pasuruan which is an area with high rates of early marriage and unemployment. It is known from the data obtained that the learning motivation of the people in the area is very low, resulting in a bad impact on the welfare of the population in the area. Therefore, the team designed PKM activities, namely using songs and folklore to revive the motivation to learn English for early childhood students using popular songs and Indonesian folk tales which were translated into English and displayed in English learning that represented local wisdom. This PKM activity can improve students' English competence from 60 to 81. This PKM activity has benefited the students because they had the opportunity to listen and perform song and folklore in English and motivated and promoted them to learn and improve their English skills more often. In addition, this activity also provides insight for teachers to further explore and implement fun English teaching methods for children so that motivation and enthusiasm for learning is built for the younger generation.

Abstract

Most undergraduate students experience summative assessment more than formative. In fact, formative assessment is more constructive than summative assessment, which impacts students’ development. Notwithstanding the benefits, research about the incorporation of formative assessment in the ESP class is somehow rare. This recent research focuses on enacting formative assessment in ESP classes regarding students’ writing skills in Indonesia. The researchers employed a case study research design to investigate how ESP teachers implement formative assessment in their classes. The participants are two EFL teachers who teach Business English subjects and forty students majoring in Economics. The researchers gathered the data from close-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and class observation. This study revealed that ESP learners were provided with multiple chances to enhance myriad facets of their writing skills and establish a good attitude regarding Business English subjects and formative assessment. Thus, educators are required to implement the formative assessment concept in their classes since the educators’ and learners’ involvement can achieve teaching and learning improvement and reflection. Future research should focus on the more particular aspects of formative evaluation, like how to give feedback and classroom discourse, which are equally useful in teaching writing.

Abstract

Education is the most important thing in a person’s life. Formal education is the learning process held by a particular educational institution, starting from the elementary, secondary, and higher education. To produce well-qualified college graduates, good teaching and learning process is needed. Determination of learning achievement in Higher Education is in the form of score of test results and observation conducted by the lecturer. The competence of college graduates cannot be seen only from the GPA and study duration, but also the ability of foreign language such as English. This study aims to determine the relationship between student achievement and English proficiency with study duration. Sampling techniques is done randomly. Statistical analysis used for this study was Pearson correlation analysis and testing the hypothesis by using Z-test. The result of the analysis indicates that there is a significant relationship statistically between student achievement and graduates’ study duration of Merdeka University Pasuruan that is the correlation coefficient obtained was –0.515. It means that the better (higher) of students’ achievement the faster the length of study will be, and the lower the students’ achievement then the longer the duration of the study period will be. For the relationship between the students’ abilities of foreign language with the duration of study, obtained correlation coefficient of 0.102, but the relationship formed insignificant statistically.

Abstract

This study investigated on the variation of language learning strategies used by first grade students at ESP (English for Specific Purposes) especially for social and science departments, Merdeka University, Malang. This study used survey study. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are engaged in this project. Quantitative methods are used to analyze data gathered from questionnaire results, while qualitative data are used to analyze data gathered from one-on-one semi structured interview. The population is 692 first grade students in faculty of economics and business; law, and engineering. The researcher took participant to be the sample of this study randomly in each department with the total participants 70 students. Based on the findings, it can be shown that social class which is represented by faculty of law and faculty of economics and business employ more to the compensation and social language learning strategy while science class which is represented by Faculty of Engineering employ more to the metacognitive strategy.
