Abstract

This research aims to produce N/S-doped Carbon Electrode derived from paper waste (NSCEp) for Electric Double-Layer Capacitor (EDLC). The paper waste holds potential as raw material for carbon production because of its high cellulose content, abundance of availability, and low price. To enhance the electrical performance of the carbon, an activation step was conducted, followed by double doping with nitrogen and sulfur using thiourea. The NSCEp result was analysed to examine its specific diffraction peaks, crystallinity, morphology, and elemental contents. The NSCEp powder was then mixed with dispersant to produce a homogeneous slurry for the electrode film. The EDLC was assembled in a sandwich-like structure, with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution impregnated in a separator between the carbon film electrodes. The EDLC assembly was conducted under an argon atmosphere in a CR2032 coin cell. The results found that the NSCEp provides a high electrical conductivity of 1.21 x 102 S/cm. The prepared EDLC achieved the specific capacitance value of 39.555 F/g as determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis. Furthermore, the EDLC demonstrates high initial charge-discharge capacities of 300.56 mAh/g and 248.88 mAh/g, respectively, at a current of 0.015 A/g. The capacity remains stable for up to 300 charge-discharge cycles.

Abstract

A study on graphene defects for hydrogen storage has been successfully conducted using the Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB) approach. The research aimed to modify solid materials for hydrogen storage. A 4 × 4 × 1 unit cell was used as the basis, while the supercell used for sampling was enlarged to 40 × 40 × 1. The analyzed data included changes in Density of States (DOS), Fermi level shifts, electronic band structures, formation energy, adsorption energy, and isosurfaces for each graphene orientation. It has been observed that modifying the surface structure of graphene can alter the electronic properties of graphene. This is indicated by shifts in DOS intensity, characterized by increased electronic intensity around the Fermi level total density charge different. The interaction energy between graphene and hydrogen gas has been determined to be -0.0155 eV for H-epoxy graphene, -0.4941 eV for H-monovacancy graphene, and -0.0424 eV for HN-monovacancy graphene. The presence of the vacancy increase the potential to adsorp hydrogen.

Abstract

A ferrocene (Fc)-modified carbon electrode was prepared from coconut shell char (CSC), which was activated with NaOH to produce an activated coconut shell carbon (Ac-CSC). The carbon electrode was designed as a printed-carbon electrode consisting of working, counter and reference electrodes in a single piece, called a screen-printed carbon electrode, or SPCE. An Fc solution was applied to the working electrode part at 10%, 20% and 30% mass of the SPCE, producing an SPCE-Fc as an electrochemical sensor for Copper ions Cu(II) detection. The prepared activated carbon was analysed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX, surface area analysis and impedance measurement to determine its diffraction pattern, available specific functional groups, morphology, elemental content, surface area and electrical conductivity. The results showed that CSC consists of 52.89% amorphous carbon, 19.65% nitrogen and 23.12% oxygen. FTIR analysis showed C=O, C=C, C-H, C-O, O-H, N-H and C-S vibrations. The Ac-CSC provided an electrical conductivity rate of 26.025 S/cm. Cyclic voltammetry analysis of the Cu(II) solution with SPCE-Fc10% provided the highest current density among the other Fc contents. Therefore, a further study used SPCE-Fc10% to determine the limit of detection (LoD), interference effects, pH and scan rate effects, the repeatability of the analysis and the reproducibility of SPCE-Fc10% for Cu(II) detection. The LoD was 0.055 mM. The electrode fabrication also showed good reproducibility, as evidenced by a repeatability coefficient (R) of 0.06. The interference test showed that the SPCE-Fc10% selectively detected Cu(II), even in the presence of 5% volume of Pb(II) and Co(II) in the Cu(II) solution.

Abstract

Soda ash (NaOH) has been used in bioethanol production in the second step destillation to increase the purity up to 90%. The destillation process will produce waste water with a high sodium content. The soda ash itself serve as an electrolyte to modify the colligative properties of the water-ethanol mixture allowing the disappearance of azeotropic point. This research aims to study the replacement of NaOH with KOH, in which the kalium is a nutrient to maintain soil fertility. This research study the thermodynamics properties, vapor-liquid equilibrium, colligative properties and also its azeotropic point in the destillation of water-ethanol mixture when KOH and NaOH were used as the additive. A model of water-ethanol mixture at a various composition of 0-100 weight % of ethanol was used. The electrolyte addition was 0.1 mol electrolyte/total weight of ethanol-water. The result shows that the addition of electrolyte into ethanol-water mixture eliminate the azeotropic point and allows the ethanol molecules to separate from water. The enthalpy of mixing between water-ethanol is 239.601 kJ/mol. It becomes 259.796 kJ/mol and 264.793 kJ/mol after the addition of NaOH and KOH, respectively. It confirming the endothermic mixing process due to different polarity between water and ethanol. The presence of electrolyte even reduce more their molecular interaction. However, the change to irregularity result a high positive entropy values that result the negative Gibbs free energy. It confirms the spontaneity of mixing. The vaporization enthalpy, Hvap, of water-ethanol mixture is 76.229 kJ/mol and it becomes 235.366 kJ/mol and 126.189 kJ/mol after the addition of NaOH and KOH. It indicates that the presence of electrolyte inhibites vaporization of water as the major component and allowing ethanol molecules to vapor producing more high purity ethanol.

Abstract

This research aims to fabricate a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) from coconut shell charcoal. The charcoal was activated with NaOH to produce activated carbon (Ac). It was mixed with acetylene black (AB) and poly (vinylidene) Fluoride (PVDF) at the mass ratio of 7:2:1 for the Ac, AB, and PVDF, respectively, followed by a dispersing with N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidinone (NMP) producing carbon slurry that was painted on a SPCE template. To increase electrochemical sensitivity, ferrocene, Fc was dropped onto the working electrode part at 10%, 20%, and 30% of the total SPCE mass. The results show that Ac is amorphous with a porous chip-like morphology containing 61.7% carbon. Ac shows vibrations of O–H, C=O, C=C, C–O, and Si–O with surface area and average pore size of 154.612 m2 g-1 and 1.42 nm, respectively. The cyclic voltammetry analysis found that 10% Fc on SPCE provides the highest current density compared to 20% and 30%. Meanwhile, the 2 mV s-1 scanning rate reveals a more defined anodic and cathodic peak than 3 mV s-1 and 5 mV s‑1. Furthermore, the SPCE with 10% Fc shows a good sensitivity to Co (II) ions, proven by a low detection limit (LoD) of 0.224 mmol L-1
